Picking a companion is more arranging a meeting and partnership with them at some unknown future time. Since companions being anything more than S9 at the start contradicts the scenario, it might be a long, long time before you meet them. Or maybe you meet them early on, and they're fated to reach the sequence you purchased them at. Either works.As for their backgrounds and descriptions, you could headcanon those as being the memories they received.

Since Warlocks have the object soulbound you get both effects for free instead of having to choose. You get one use for affinity and still het the +25% Bonus to elemental magic permanently, and because it's part of you it also can't be stolen like a normal pearl could. It's one of the best items you can get soulbound with warlock, like any of the consumables because they work the same way. This was all confirmed by the author.
