What's a good explanation for random enemy knights and other humanoid enemies or NPC's being inhumanly tall for no discernable reason like you see in Dark Souls and related games?
>>97685093confirmation bias inhumanly large and powerful beings will naturally rise in rank, either because their utility in combat is recognized or because they outlive all their peersso "knights", or analogues to them, would disproportionately represent these freaks of nature
>>97685093If you gave an explanation for it, then there would be a discernable reason.
>>97685093Gwynever from Dark Souls is that big because it's writer's barely disguised fetish and he admited to it in some interview
>>97685093Healthy nutrition not having to eat peasant gruel all day long.
>OP couldn't resist posting about his fetish
>>97685093They just are. Who cares?
>>97685093Traditional games?
>>97685133She's not even real so her size is unknown and ultimately irrelevant.
>>976853591) All the scaled furniture in her room are real2) The whole point of the illusions throughout the abandoned city was pretaning that everything is normal
Nobility used to be taller than peasants because they got better nutrition. This is also why steppe raiders and barbarians were often imposing.
>>97685392This is also why urchins and destituted often looked sickly, with rickets, bowed legs / soft bones, bleeding gums and loose teeth, translucent skin, often got sick, and other stuff. Their bodies lacked essential nutrients. They often had night blindness and eye issues (Vitamin A Deficiency), many suffered from Xerophthalmia. Another one was Pellagra (Vitamin B3 / Niacin Deficiency), rampant in areas where the poor relied almost exclusively on corn/maize that hadn't been properly treated. It was often called the "Red Dirt" disease. A thick, scaly rash that looked like a severe sunburn, often forming a "necklace" around the throat (Casal’s necklace).Chronic protein and caloric malnutrition led to nutritional dwarfing. Adults who stood significantly shorter than the upper classes. In Victorian London, for instance, there was a measurable height gap (often several inches) between a boy raised in the slums versus one raised in a wealthy household."Spoon Nails" and Paleness (Iron Deficiency). Their fingernails become thin and concave (shaped like a spoon), often capable of holding a drop of water.Goiters (Iodine Deficiency): A massive swelling in the front of the neck. While often associated with mountainous regions ("the goiter belt"), urban populations with no access to seafood or diverse produce frequently suffered from thyroid enlargement.
>>97685425Chronic malnutrition often lead to extreme irritability, chronic anxiety, and eventually full-blown psychosis or hallucinations. Many people ended up in asylums when they actually just needed a better diet.Cognitive Stunting (Iodine Deficiency). Iodine is critical for brain development, particularly in the womb and during early childhood. It resulted in permanent cognitive impairment, slow speech, and a lack of coordination. Even mild deficiency lowered the "collective IQ" of entire slum neighborhoods, making it harder for children to learn or escape their circumstances.Apathy and "Brain Fog" (Iron & B12). When the body is severely anemic (lack of Iron) or lacking B12, the brain is deprived of adequate oxygen and cellular energy. To a wealthy observer, a person suffering from B12 deficiency appeared "shiftless" or "dim-witted," when in reality, their brain was operating in a low-power survival mode. The "Scurvy Melancholy" (Vitamin C). While we associate Scurvy with bleeding gums, one of its earliest symptoms is actually psychological. A deep, crushing depression and "hypochondriasis" (an obsession with one's own physical decline). It sapped the will to work or even move, creating a cycle of despair that was physical in origin. This created a devastating biological trap:>Malnutrition led to impaired brain function and low energy.>Impaired function made it impossible to hold steady work or focus in school.>Lack of work meant less money for nutritious food.People are much more likely to be 'bad' when they are hungry, and 'mad' when they are starved of the right vitamins. The "hollow-eyed" look of the destitute wasn't just a sign of hunger; it was the look of a nervous system that was literally fraying.
>>97685116This.
>>97685320We don't talk about games here.
>>97685380Good point, but I doubt her room was supposed to be seen by many anyway, the important thing was having the sun over the city.>>97685563You certainly don't, kek.
>>97685359You can use the royal statues to get a size estimate.
>>97685093FROMslop kinda stinky tbqh, just say the land was once ruled by giants.
>>97686206>You certainly don't, kek.Tell us which game OP is asking about.
In Dark Souls it was because Gwen was from a race of gods. The various enemies were often the remnants of civilisations who had launched expeditions throughout the ages trying to relink the flame and/or restore the city of the gods. Some of these expeditions seem to have been more than human - demigods or maybe half-giants.
>>97685175Pretty much this.
>>97685093... they just are
Megafauna regions permeated with growth-stimulating magic?Genetics + nutrition? Selective breeding for size?Personal favorite - tangible effect of accumulating XP over the course of a lifetime, making heroes physically tower over the commoners.
I just like the idea that in fantasy world humans naturally vary much more, from 4 foot tall to 10 fairly regularly.
>>97686987>tangible effect of accumulating XP over the course of a lifetime, making heroes physically tower over the commoners. That’s kinda hot
>>97686321You may not be aware, but dark souls is a traditional game. Try google next time, this one's on the house.
>>97688955We'll ignore the fact that OP didn't say his general statement>like you see in Dark Souls and related games...and pretend that he explicitly meant this "Dark Souls traditional game" you're referring to.So, if OP is asking about this "Dark Souls traditional game", he should be able to look in its rules to find>a good explanation for random enemy knights and other humanoid enemies or NPC's being inhumanly tall for no discernable reason...and if such an explanation doesn't exist, then it literally doesn't make a difference to gameplay.
>>97685093Magic water.It was a thing in LotR.
>>97689887>rules should explain why the enemy is bigAnon, your bad faith posturing just to be annoying already makes you look pathetic enough, you don't need to double down on it. Maybe /qst/ would be more up your alley?
>>97685093Make it like the original Waffen-SS.You can't be in a knightly order unless you're so-and-so tall and can prove your peerage/pedigree so-and-so many generations back.
>>97685093That's supposed to be a goddess though, I see no problem with gods being "inhumanly" tall.
>>97686321Dark Souls. Can't you read?
>>97690663>>rules should explain why the enemy is bigIdeally yes. Like why is Centaur (player race) size Medium but Centaur (monster) size Large? Just so that prior can mount a horse (to ride on)?
>>97690794Potsdamer Riesengarde might be better exaple, selected only for height regardless of origin.
Dark Souls is actually a bunch of nerds playing a tabletop game and the minis are different scales.
>>97691555This is actually canon in Smash Bros. It's all just some kid playing with Nintendo action figures, which is why Pikachu is almost as big as a full grown man.
>>97690663Quests don't operate on rules, they're purely QM whim. That's why they aren't considered games any more.
>>97685359I'm finally playing through DS for the first time and I did see a statue of her in Anor Londo that is also big as fuck, even compared with statues of other figures. Also like other people mentioned, her actual room is scaled to her, but time and reality seem kinda warped, so I could see statues or even entire rooms being illusory, but I don't really know that much about DS lore >>97685133One of the best ways to world build
>>97686321Any game that might include giants faglord
>>97691004>Just so that prior can mount a horseYes.>(to ride on)?No.
Gods are taller than humans, this is simple stuff
>>97691065Also a good inspiration.
>>97685093They were good boys and drank their milk and ate their veggies.
>>97691746An explanation that might be good for one game may not be possible for other games.
Interbreeding with giants, or using bootleg growth potions as PEDs?I've heard an explanation of all the giant monsters that are just giant versions of normal animals and insects being wizards dumping their potions into the environment, as opposed to prehistoric survivors. It also explains the preponderance of rampaging swamp beasts.
>>97685093In the OG Dark Souls, they were a literal race of giants lording over the humans who were called pygmies from the size difference; from their point of view, they weren't that large as a whole, humans were just midgets.Warcraft and TES offer the explanation that humans are the linear descendants of giants, and a genetic throwback or two can leave someone a basketball player when they reach their full seasons.
>>97690794That's not the Waffen-SS, that's the Potsdam Giants.
>>97685133No, the writer admitted it was the fetish of someone else on the team and he didn't have the heart to tell them no even tho he didn't get the appeal.
How about feet magic?
>>97685093Just make PCs grow equally tall as they gain more power.
>>97685093It's a trick question, because the reason why basically every humanoid enemy in Dark Souls (and every other action rpg Fromsoft has made) is much taller than the player is a purely practical gameplay concession. In a third person over the shoulder action game, whose core combat loop is based around reading and reacting to enemy attack windups, having the enemies be taller than the player allows them to actually, you know, see the enemy. If you've played the games, or seen people talk about them, you know that dogs and rats are some of the most hated enemies. Mostly because you cant see them through your character. There is a bit of a lore angle to it as well, like the very tall Black and Silver Knights are specifically never stated to be human and instead heavily implied to be of an entirely separate race from humans. But then actual human enemies are also taller than the human player, because its a gameplay thing first.
>>97686319>>97686987these.the knights are ancient, they're just normal size, then tiny little humans came along. or there was some Elder Scrolls dark elf type curse that shrunk the old knights down to the first humans.you could even throw in dungeons that are larger than usual, intended for the tall knights of old.never played Dark Souls so i don't know if this is along the right lines.
