The move away from the classic 4x6 table and the packing of extra models in every army really killed the sense of scale and the importance of maneuver.

This sort of idea with each board being a main feature

Current table. Nothing too fancy. Just a few yards of plain green cloth from walmart, with just a touch of spray paint for variation. Hindering terrain boundaries are green felt cutouts, also touched up with spray paint. Water is just cutouts from blue transparency sheets. Tree scatter is just model railroad trees that I touched up with even more spray paint, and based. bridges are popsicle stick builds

that's what I tried to do, but I might have underestimated just how much I needed because there's some release from the board.
The bigger mistake in hindsight was to use EPS instead of XPS because I don't dare transport this from fear of breaking it.

is sawdust flock just the stuff you get results on when searching model railway flock that isn't static grass?

I am always in trouble with terrain bases. For small pieces corrugated cardboard and even that thin cerealbox type can work. But for something big like these I often read MDF recommended but that sounds like an extra hassle with procuring and cutting.
Also the dilemma of having a fixed layout of pieces with bases over being able to freely place stuff, but the former also lets you decorate them nicely.

It's just about what works for your style of game and storage space, setup preferences, available material.
I prefer single pieces with no visible base for versatility of setup, also I can just toss it all in a big box for storage.
I use thin plywood which I scavenge from bulky waste spots; the bottoms of drawers, the backs of cabinets, etc. I simply precut it with a hobby knife and then break it off.
A tile like style like in the tutorial is best if you have a large storage space and want a very quick setup.
Pic unrelated, but great for inspiration.

There are lots of ways to make cheap terrain.
Grab an old terrain toy from your kiddies toy box (castle, train set, houses, etc), paint and modify them to look more realistic.
Make buildings from card (either print off papercraft buildings or recycle any old boxes and pringle tubes you have)
Carve buildings, walls and terrain from expanded foam insulation sheets and white goods packing.
Use tubs of wood filler to make terrain.
Get cheap terrain from fish tank shops.
Paint plastic food containers and use as sci fi buildings.
Make hedges or fields of crops from sample pieces of astroturf cut into strips.
Use pieces of fake coloured fur or cloth as fields of crops.
The options and methods you can use are endless.

I started working on this basic ruin/damaged fortification a while ago but hit a mental block and I'm not sure what I want to do with it and I'd like advice. The walls will be built up higher on the upper floor for cover but I need to work out some other stuff first.

The first thing I'm not sure about is what I'm going to do with the ground. I don't want it to just be dirt/sand. I thought about cutting out squares of cardboard to tile/pave the ground but I'm not sure if it would look "right" thematically.

The second thing I'm not sure about is the wooden platform. I know a lot of people like to snap all the edges off haphazardly to make it look really messed up but I don't really want to do that. Even though it's going to be a ruin, I still want it to look like it could reasonably be used as a defensive platform. I'm thinking maybe I'll just cut the exposed edge straight/flush but then maybe put a couple of small holes through the planks to show a bit of disrepair. But I'm indecisive.
>>
>>97713597
Oh that works. Going to work on a coast line made in a way that is easy to recombine into different shapes. Thanks anon.
>>
>>97716234
>cut the exposed edge straight, then maybe put a couple of small holes through the planks to show a bit of disrepair
This. If it's supposed to be (re)used for defense, you'd realistically want to remove all the pointy bits for safety sake, and to avoid stuff getting caught up on them.
So cut them straight, and I wouldn't worry if it ends up a little uneven - it's not supposed to look perfect.
>lower floor
Wooden floor as well? Some sacks, crates and barrels - the usual provisions stuff, maybe some tools and materials for repair?

Its way easier than it looks. Get something flat and sturdy enough to be used as a base, glue random junk to it until you feel that it looks like something, prime and paint. Its intimidating at first, but once you scratch build your first terrain piece, it all kind of makes sense.

Try these two projects first

historical/fantasy Stone walls
https://youtu.be/RA-VgiDcMBE?si=wVMjvReHgTJM_LBK

Sci fi /40k walla

https://youtu.be/uIMfwD_wPeo?si=xBIrA8-LYWe1XxeT

Once you just start fucking around and realize how easy it is, you start noticing materials in your daily life that you can gank for terrain.

Pic related is one of my terrain pieces at a the built, primed, and then finished(ish) stages.(. ( I always found these unfinished terrain pics helpful to really visualize a project, so hopefully it works as well for you.)
As you can see, I just started gluing random household junk and cheap materials together until it started looking like an industrial slum.Scotch tube, spice tubes, insulation foam, popsicle sticks, knitting mesh, dog poo bag rolls, and some dollar store foam core. The base is a dollar store clip board that cost about two bucks. Paint anything wood or paper based with glue, prime it all, paint it all, and you're good to go.

Good luck. Post a pic of your first terrain piece.

But if the wells themself are warping? Are you dipping the walls into a paint can or something?
>>
>>97735529
Most people use foam board, or insulation foam.

>>97735608
Paper and cardboard always warps when it gets painted because paint is full of water and the paper/cardboard sucks it up. You can minimize the warping my painting both sides so it evens it out, but it's not ideal.
>>
>>97734591
This, but unironically.
>>
>>97735529
Double layer currogated cardboard works fine if you make buildings out of it, it will warp when used as a flat, stand alone surface though.

You can even use your simple, everyday packaging bubble foam.
>>
>>97735529
I typically use card for the structure of buildings then cover it with DAS mixed with plastic glue. Foam is used to make hills or brickwork, in the former case its then covered with filler or clay to give shape.

>Paper and cardboard always warps
Yeah, but to the point of being a problem? Make me question what is anon doing to his walls.
>>
>>97738414
I've heard spraying that stuff with a rattle can will melt it. How about airbrushing, would that work?
>>
>>97739265
Solvent will melt any foam, the paint needs to be water soluble.
>>
>>97739265
>>97739338
I've heard you can spray varnish on the foam first to prevent melting when you spray paint, but I don't know how true that is.
>>
>>97739491
Only if the varnish is water soluble.
Also you will probably not cover everything and still end up with a few molten parts.
>>
>>97739491

Paint any foam, wood, paper, cardboard, etc. with a layer of mod-podge, then paint to your hearts content.
If you're worried about warping, cover both sides of a material with mod podge

I cut rough semicircles out of the tops of some big plastic tubs of sweets, to use as a definite border for forest zones.
Roughly painted, sanded, stuck on a little flock
I just put my coin-based candle-braided sprue scatter trees on top.
Featuring; Wargames Atlantic Spider and accessories.
Which are STILL out of stock >:(

>>
>>97739265
i remember someone telling me that whats making it melt is the accelerant, what makes the paint in the go brr.
airbrushing should be fine, as its just blowing normal paint with air.
>>
>>97741551
Yeah, most acrylics lack solvents strong enough to melt foam.
As other have mentioned, a good coat of mod podge (or thinned down PVA, nearly identical, really) and you can spray liberally. It's always good to test on some leftovers just to be safe, though.

What's funny is that they created the metric system and the french calendar during the revolution as part of a radical dechristianization and decimalization of society. They went back to the Christian Gregorian Calendar after Napoleon because the decimal calendar was so ass retarded, but for some reason the metric system stuck, and eurofaggots to this day think they are superior because they are using some shit that was spontaneously made up by some edgy atheists that just hated God and their own history LMAO
>>
>>97752079
at least your kids gets some metric through their heads
>>
>>97752079
As someone in the UK so having grown up with both Imperial and Metric.

The metric system is brilliant. 1 ml of water weighs 1 gram and takes up 1 cm^3 of space, One small calorie raises one gram of water 1°C. One Kcal raises 1 Liter of water 1°C.

1 Newton is the amount of force needed to accelerate one kilogram 1m/s2

You are probably too stupid to need any of this, but for the rest of us it's handy.

>>97755203

Just because the historical equivalente of retarded commies are too retarded to implement something does not mean the rest of the world has to suffer.
I mean we are still suffering the consequence of nuclear power fear, because the commies are absolute retards and can't boil water.

Terrain threads make me a little sad, I loved making scenery as a kid, space base, country train set, fantasy dungeon castle whatever, I was pretty good at it considering I only had access to whatever I could find in my dad's shed, Warhammer came out and I though hell yes this is for me, managed to get to the city and was a bit disappointed I couldn't afford anything in the shop. Put it all behind me and started working for the man building real things but it sucked, not as fun as building scenery, over the years I did get a few pieces, painted them up but never played it, now and then go into a place and all the people are smelly and nerdy, last time there was a proper tard pissing himself in the shop. So never went back, I hoped my son would have a go at it but he never was interested.

I was actually building for Rangers of Shadowdeep for that very reason.
It's not much more complicated than Heroquest.
However.
All my friends are going away or already gone, off to better things, and I no longer know who or what I am building for.
But the building soothes me.
It lets me pretend I did something meaningful.
Gives me something to dream about.

I tried playing a solo game once.
It felt empty.

I think the next hill I make, I should put a chalk drawing on the side.
Like the White Horse at Uffington, or the Cerne-Abbas giant.

squares are shit, for natural looking rivers and such things
but there's a problem with that number of tiles, in the pic
if you want to do rolling roads, best is to have an integer number of tile sides on each table side
that way, you can make the road roll easily by removing the last tiles, moving all others forward, and add the same number of tiles on the other end
there are 18 2x1 tiles, on that board, for a board aspect ratio of 7x5, so you can't have an integer number of tiles on each table side
12 2x1 tiles, for a board aspect ratio of, say, 6x4 would work better for what I'm talking about
