What do you do to help keep our shared hobby pure? How do you fight against those trying to destroy it?
>>97708249Ironically they've monetized the obsession with purity to have Official Product™. The heterogeneity and variation you are harkening to is actually the opposite of purity and requires only that people play games, use their imaginations and share their creations. You have played a game and made something for it recently right anon?
>>97708249>How do you fight against those trying to destroy it?I don't really have to, you've mostly sequestered yourself here on /tg/. Thanks for that.
Run something besides the product that all the normies flock to.
>>97708318This explains a lot about tons of shit now that I think of it.I've been wondering why fuckos argue about "canon" in anything, when both everyone has the capability to at least WRITE if not make some other forms of art, and almost inevitably most things in "official" material pushed out by a company don't involve the original creator directly (or at all) or have meddling from higher ups. Any kind of sequel is essentially fanfiction to begin with.If you prefer how Eberron is portrayed in the fucking D&D MMO more than the official 3.5e books then use that. If you think Shadowrun took a wrong turn in the lore around "n"th edition and you you have a better idea for how to extend the callender in a different way, do that. What people come up with is identically as valid as what some multi-million-dollar company creates, because we are all just making up fiction here. Fake settings, fake worlds, fake physics, fake histories. There is no "real thing" that any of this is about.
>>97708249well we start by openly mocking every single thing they do to make it suckthey wouldn't spam every single fucking thread we make about it if they weren't threatened
>>97708914Which >weand which >they ?
>>97709002>which theyThe suits who are constantly trying to turn a collaborative, decentralized, DIY-friendly hobby into one that's filled with microtransactions and rentseeking, and the people who are so accustomed to other areas of entertainment (and life) being this way that they just throw representations of chunks of their work-hours at it without thinking.>which wePeople who see this kind of scam for what it is.Funfact: Game rules, factual information, and purely utilitarian things cannot be copyrighted. As long as the expression of such is different, you can release clones of any of this bullshit for free, undermining this kind of business model.
>>97708249Well, I don't play DND, especially not buy anything from WOTC.
>>97709041Oh that >weand >theyOn it, have a nice day anon.
>>97708359SPBP.>>97708249The only "hobby" that exists is that of your table. And since I only run for/play with my friends, I don't have to worry about faggots like (You) infesting my hobby.
>>97708249I keep my table the way I like it and let others keep theirs the way they like theirs. That's the hobby in its purest form.
>>97708800Canon can't be ignored even if you don't use it because that's what establishes the baseline for the game/setting. When WotC does something retarded and I decide to ignore it, that means I have to have the same discussion about why it's retarded every time I play with someone new.
>>97709478>Canon can't be ignored even if you don't use it because that's what establishes the baseline for the game/settingRetarded take, it absolutely can. I never use officially printed settings, and I play a ton of games without official settings.>When WotC does something retarded and I decide to ignore it, that means I have to have the same discussion about why it's retarded every time I play with someone new. That's your problem for being so unlikable you keep getting booted from your groups lol
>>97709478The baseline can be whatever you want. 20 years ago the 3.5e DMG, still fucking WoTC, had an entire section providing some guidance and ideas to make settings that have completely different mixes of races and classes instead of the base ones to fit different settings, from just bizarre fantasy to asian crap to futuristic things. If what you want is some prior edition's setting you just say "I'm basing this off of n-edition Forgotten Realms" and have a small document establishing how everything is. Not "For X, instead of Y, Z is the case", but "X is/are/does Z".>I have to have the same discussionThe discussion is piss easy. "I like this better." I tell people I prefer Guilty Gear XX Bridget more than the current one and don't care about "canon" and they can't say shit. The key is that I'm simply saying that canon does not matter at all. I am not arguing with them OVER canon, I am saying there is isn't canon entirely. People who always assumed canon exists are just left dumbfounded by that. This shit is not religion, it's goddamn hobbies.
>>97708249By playing mostly with my friends, if we don’t like someone we tell them to get lost
>>97709478I'm not using WotC settings, though.
>>97708249What is this?
>>97708249
>>97708249Pic is outdated, they don't let you purchase individual items anymore. Now you have to buy the whole digital book again if you just wanted one spell from a splat.
>>97709478>Canon can't be ignored even if you don't use it because that's what establishes the baseline for the game/setting. When WotC does something retarded and I decide to ignore it, that means I have to have the same discussion about why it's retarded every time I play with someone new.It really doesn't. I run games for new groups off Reddit because I like it and it's fun. And I use FR because I like it and it's fun. And it's been years and at-least dozens of players since anyone ever complained that I wasn't doing Forgotten Realms the "right" way.Anyone who is new doesn't say shit 'cuz they don't know. And anyone who isn't new doesn't say shit 'cuz they're not new and they know how games work. You're complaining about an absolute non-issue.
>>97708249I tell you to fuck off to reddit where you came from like all the other the donald offcasts.
>>97708249Refuse to play/run 5.Xe and PF2e in specific and anything produced after 2011 in general. Done.
Sadly, we have no reason to believe the damage can ever be undone. The days where there was a relatively uniform RPG fandom have passed (by which I mean a common and respectful culture, not an era in which only a certain set of RPGs were uniformly played). Gone are the days where a DnD fan and a VtM fan could happily shoot the shit with each other despite not having much in common, replaced by social media, influencer culture, and the all-devouring culture wars. We can try to re-enforce it through bullying, but that will only make a sad shadow of the original culture built on fear and ego rather than genuine culture. What you can do is try to keep that original culture alive and induct new people in your group into it, so that if the bloated monstrosity of the modern fandom ever deflates it might be that you and your bros can rebuild it from the ashes.
>>97710472>if the bloated monstrosity of the modern fandom ever deflatesEverything is just going to fragment into new smaller groups. Things got too big, too "mass market" and its all shifting towards becoming a mosaic. What being shitty towards the retards does do is establish boundaries. It says "we are here" to people who also want to break from the shit. This accelerates the fragmenting since one more alternative now can take in people who are dissatisfied to the point of slowing participation with or becoming ostracized from that mainstream social setting. There is no "rebuilding it from the ashes." There is building it now as a sort of subcultural secession.
