From a purely theoretical POV, what is meant to be the counter archetype to the "I counter and destroy everything then win with 2 cards" kinda decks? Most counterspells are 2 mana so they trade one-for-one against higher value cards, and getting a creature to stick seems impossible plus they have far better draw and filtering tools so they can fish for all their answers once they read your deck.Pure aggro doesn't work against the azorius variants, maybe burn is better? >>97727147The first thing I'll say is that Magic is a difficult and complex game, and especially when starting out it's very easy to lose purely because of sequencing plays poorly or misunderstanding the board state, even before you get into the natural variance of lucky/unlucky draws or mana screw/flood. For that reason, even if you're getting clobbered, try to always have an idea of what you could've drawn to change the outcome, or more importantly ways you could've played differently. What decks have you been trying so far? And as someone who has been playing almost two decades, I'm curious what got you into magic now?
>>97727151I don't even feel like I could have played differently. My opponents just always seem to have something that can wipe creatures off my board. The decks I've tried are Graveyard Gifts and Vampiric Hunger. Vampiric Hunger is the one I've actually managed to get one single win with.

It has multiple spells that cost 6+ mana, and in a deck with 24 lands that means on average you'll need to see damn near a third of your deck before you can cast one, but the reanimation strategy is leaning on a very small number of discard outlets and mill sources and 3 copies of Zombify. Especially as a newer player, aggressive decks that are just looking to spend as much mana as possible each turn to play out creatures are going to be easier to pilot and easier to win with. The UI on https://mtg.wiki/page/Foundations_Starter_Decks isn't great but if you glance at the cards in something like the RW Might of the Legion deck, all it wants to do is cast creatures and turn them sideways. Those creatures are cheap, and they typically have some ability that lets them either maintain utility once they can't attack or force through the last few points of damage. Vampiric Hunger is similar but is also trying to do some lifegain and Vampire synergies. Another thing you can try with starter decks is if you lose, switch to their deck and see if it's better than what you were doing before. One issue with the starter decks is that compared to normal decks, they don't have much consistency or much of a focused plan. It's common for a constructed deck to have 3 or 4 copies of almost all of its cards. When you're running 1 or 2 copies it's harder to find what you need when you need it, and it's more likely you'll end up with the worst card in your deck rotting in your hand. Sometimes a card that's powerful but has diminishing returns when cast repeatably can justify being a single copy, but that's less common.

This isn't paper, so every set has the same effective expected value once you take into account obvious shit like sets you want cards from or sets you have a lot of cards from so that you can use the fact that there's protection against duplicates to fill out the collection. Your best bet for converting gold into actual equity is drafting. Drafting will improve your skill at magic, get you a lot of cards immediately, and if you win it'll net you even more cards. Once you get good at draft they'll even pay for their own entry fees but that's hard to do consistently. The two main types of draft are Booster Draft (8 players each open a pack, take one card for your deck, pass to another player, do this for three packs worth of cards per player) and Sealed (you get six packs and try to make a deck out of them). Each has their own cadence and meta, I recommend Sealed when you're starting out because you don't need to learn how to draft you just need to put your bomb rares and your decent removal in a pile and add 17 lands to it. The usual F2P pipeline is use starter decks to grind your dailies and earn gold -> spend gold on a draft -> draft enough cards/get enough wildcards from reward packs to build a shitty standard deck -> grind standard (or even standard events once you upgrade to an actual meta deck) -> do what you want in other formats/draft environments. This can take a while to build up a war chest, but it is viable.

You also don't need to do all your matches immediately, though you do need to do the draft itself in one sitting. Which sets are available to draft does vary, though. Typically the most recent set will be available for Booster/Premier Drafting and Sealed Drafting (and also meme shit like Quick Draft against bots or Pick-2 drafting which is an abortion of a format), and then one or two other older sets will be around for one format or another. There's also stuff like Cube drafting which is similar to Booster Draft but from a curated selection of 540 cards with only one copy of each across the entire draft pool, which makes for very interesting and high-powered gameplay but is definitely not beginner friendly.
Lorwin and Strixhaven are garbage planes we need to return to a good plane like Kaldheim desu.

Packs have duplicate protection, so once you have 4x of a card from a set (and it has to be that set's printing of that card, that's a whole other can of worms) it'll give you other cards. If you run out of rares in a set, it'll give you a small number of gems instead, but nowhere near enough to pay for themselves. Packs are how you get wildcards though, and that's how you get specific individual cards. So it's less of a strat and more of a small rebate.
Draft is degenerate gambling and little else. You're not building anything. Every modern set has a bunch of archetype lines for you to follow and all draft is is gambling in which of these lines is open. It's for boomers who have to be handheld through deck building because they can't keep up with how complex and layered contemporary standard decks are.

The winrate required to break even is pretty unsustainable though, needing 5-3 for Best of 1 or 4-1 for Best of 3. Draft is slightly easier to break even because going 4-3 then 5-3 has you even on gems but with a bunch of packs plus the cards you drafted, with the downside that you have to be good at drafting to maintain that 60% winrate. Also for what it's worth standard now rotates every 5 years so cards stay legal for a lot longer, but unfortunately power creep is so vicious that often decks are obsolete within a year anyways.

Authority is really nice to have, basically every deck plays creatures and Authority stops them from blocking for a turn plus life gain. And it pumps scavenger. It's a fun deck. Very resilient, it can fight through multiple board wipes. Mono white and mono green get hosed by seam rips, nowhere to run and sheltered by ghosts. Flyers get blocked by spider from helpful weaver and stashed skeleton drops a menace skeleton.
