Hey so been wanting to play in a Romance of the Three Kingdoms inspired game that I could use to run such a setting, starting from Yellow Turbans and going through it. But haven't found any ttrpgs for the setting,

any suggestions on games I could use for this? Also Please no gurps or fate recommendations as my group just don't mesh with those systems.

Why not Legend of the Five Rings? If you're looking for something more historical you'll struggle a bit.

desu my only worry with L5R is that besdies being super engrained into the way of the samurai is how heavy it leans into the mystical for magical powers and stuff which I guess isn't out of the norm for ROTK but yeah. Was hoping for semi historical.

GURPS might be best for that.

my group has tried to use gurps in the past and it straight up did not mesh with us at all. it felt too disjointed and with a trillion rulebooks but none of it ever goes more than skin deep.

I also asked for anything other than Gurps or Fate.

Qin the Warring states would work. The setting is the end of the Spring and Autumn period/beginning of the warring states - so around 200 years or so before the Three Kingdoms but the mechanics for kung fu and chinese society stuff is there. The Legends book and the Art of War book probably would track nicely as well so you could do big battles and some of the more fantastical stuff from the Romances.

It may be worth noting that a surprising amount of Battletech's backstory borrows from the beginning of the Three Kingdoms era. Amaris is basically Space Dong Zhuo.

If you're a westerner, this scene is uncomfortable because he looks like he might be a pedo. If you're Chinese, and you know the little boy is a prince, this scene is uncomfortable for a very different reason...

I very much know this but am not skilled enough in battletech's RPG's to do this I feel. though I feel that would be a really cool campaign.

I like it. The book is beautiful, it fits the low fantasy wuxia genre incredibly well. My one gripe is that when they translated it from frog to english there were some minor translation issues - but it's not big enough to actually effect gameplay.

The yin yang die mechanics take a little bit of getting used to if you're used to games like dnd but are thematic and fun. Essentially you have two d10, one is yin one is yang - to roll for a result you subtract the higher from the lower to get the result which ranges from 0-9. When testing a skill you add your ability and skill to the yin yang result to get a final result.

If your yin and yang are the same (except for 0) you've achieved a critical success and regain some chi. If your yin and yang are both 0 you critically fail and lose some chi.

Combat can be a bit esoteric but it feels like a movie like Hero or Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and encourages movement and flexibility.

Mass combat (from the Art of War book) is ok but the individual heroics definitely are the main focus of the game.

Hrmmm I see doesn't sound so bad. Have you run much of it? If so I'd love to talk with you more to learn more of it so I can better learn it for my group.

I've run it a bit, but I'm not an expert. As much as I hate the rpg.net forums some dude ran a campaign there like a decade ago that explains everything pretty well. I dunno if you can find it on the internet archives.

hrmm trying to find it any idea what to search for it? or something to narrow down the search?

also would you be up to sharing discords so I can ask questions easier? I understand if you prefer not to.

I don't have discord due to workplace security reasons sorry but I've found you some decent starting places:

Some dude has apparently already run it for three kingdoms:
