i ruined my dms game last session and he had to cancel early all because i cast hallow on our base and i reminded him right as he was about to have a recurring fey lord minions ambush us. he still gave us all the loot so now i have a 21 strength belt on my sorcerer
I honestly can't tell if OP had a stroke or chatbot had genning issues.
>>97742545do my run-on sentences bother you
>>97742535What kind of fey ambush don't have access to dispel magic?
>>97742560the kind that don't have dispel magic at 7th level
>>97742535This sentence is completely incoherent. Like, it’s borderline gibberish.
>>97742585ive heard enough about it
>>97742582So you have access to level 5 spells, but your innately magical enemies with no other major strength besides magic don't even have level 3 spells? Sounds like this one is on your gm.
>>97742671its was a horde of pixies and fey creatures. lore wise they fey lord doesn't have much knowledge of our powers because no one ever comes back to report and last time we were level 9 and now we are level 13
>>97742671>Sounds like this one is on your gmwhich is why he still let us have the loot
>>97742555based
>>97742535>preplanned encounter>preplanned loot>annoyed because no le epic story moment Why are we encouraging interactive stories instead of a player action derived narrative?
>>97742805>narrative was objectively defined by a player actionSo do words just not have meaning anymore?
>>97742880>ruined my dms game last session>had to cancel early because i cast hallow>he still gave us all the loot Literally every part is prewritten except how the players beat it
>>97742898>okay everyone welcome to games night>no sorry you have to decide what your enemies are doing, preplanning an encounter isnt letting the narrative be defined by player action>remember not to look at the CR when you do, knowing if something is likely to kill you or not is also not player action>what did those enemies have? Oh i dont know, i thought id let player action determine the loot
>>97742535Couldn't he improvise some bullshit
Suddenly, I'm having deja vu from "railroading" threads.
>>97742805because we are in Ebberon and a player stole this dudes magic amulet
>>97742898>>97742898>Literally every part is prewritten except how the players beat ithe blindly rolls a d20 every session to see if they are going to ambush us next time we play we play on foundry sometimes so he has limited time to make maps and characters
>>97743141>what did those enemies have? Oh i dont know, i thought id let player action determine the lootThey didn't fight the enemies, why was there loot?
>>97743189all of them died as they divebombed from a magic cloud onto our airship and splated like bugs on the hallow spell
Why would this ruin anything? Do your characters not have any goals they're trying to pursue?
>>97743208see>>97743189That's not how the spell works. That's just the GM >I guess you win the fight, have their stuff
>>97743239>your characters not have any goalsIt's the DMs game, they are just lucky to play in it
>>97742898>except how the players beat itSo player action derived narrative?
>>97742535This is what adversarial game systems produce. If you read it and think "Awesome, I want to play those games", go for DnD.If you think "What a dour way to waste an evening", look somewhere else.
>>97743244>thats not how the spell works>cast in a sphere >fey jumped from a high height planning on hovering and landing in a aera they suddenly couldn't what would happen other then they bounce off?inb4 hallow cant be cast on a moving shipasked the dm a month ago they said if i get the 1000 gold to cast it he'd okay it
>>97743208>they divebombed from a magic cloud onto our airship>splated like bugs on the hallow spellYou are adding more information that wasn't there before>>97743280>planning on hovering and landing in a aera they suddenly couldn'tSo was it fall damage? Hovering and flight? If they took fall damage, they would have taken it from landing on the ship. If it was just >lol impassablethen yes they would have just been stopped moving in that directionTell the whole story before acting like people have somehow missed something obvious
>>97742805>>97742898pre-planned would have been "the spell fails and the fey show up anyway", OP objectively determined the outcome through his choices here.
>>97742535>now i have a 21 strength belt on my sorcererI know magical items do the whole one-size-fits-all thing, but still the idea of looting a belt from 10" fairy and casually putting it on OP's (presumably ~6' tall) character is just damn hilarious.
>>97743302>So was it fall damage? Hovering and flight? If they took fall damage, they would have taken it from landing on the ship. If it was justpixies have wings assuming they were droping down to surprise only to slow to a hover right before they landed not thinking there would be a invisible force blocking them from entering.
>>97743385I'm a halfling but the point stands lol
>>97743396RAW forced movement doesnt count towards your speed, and falling is forced movement. flying units usually want to drop from at least 500ft up to avoid longbow fire, then activate their voluntary flight 5ft from the ground to cancel out the fall and move normally. If the sphere is physically impassable thats 70 bludgeoning damage on average iirc. Those fey are becoming two dimensional
>>97743414They don't need to fall all the height in one go, they can segment it into drop-fly5ft-drop-fly5ft etc., as long as the combined breaks add up to their flight allowance per turn (flight speed).
>>97743463that sounds convoluted and gay
>>97743480kinda, but then the rules are kinda garbage to begin with
They can't willingly enter an area but gravity isn't their choice. So they could easily fall into your base then fly before they hit the groundDM (and you) are retarded
>>97743708the word willingly is never mentioned RAW
>>97742585what did you not understand?
>>97742671One thing about 5e is that low-level monsters in large numbers can still be a threat to adventurers, in earlier editions a difference of a few levels means they would struggle to even touch a PC.
>>97742535OP is lying, all Hallow does in 3e is prevent certain monster types from entering the area. Something as long-lived as a fey could simply stage a siege.
>>97744004Well they were supposed to be. But with the power scaling of 5e, combat comes down to damage sponging and rebounds. The concept of 5e bounded accuracy would have been interesting if it was still a game of resource attrition.
>>97744131Yeah the AC scaling being harshly nerfed was a step in the right direction but the game's HP scaling is still a huge problem.
>>97743385It's a cock ring.
>>97743742NTA, Neither is the edge of the spell incurring falling damage. The GM basically made the most favourable possible ruling for the players.
Sounds like a fun time. Gz on your 21 strength belt. Hope you guys get that fey lord next time.
>>97746491Unearned valour. Is this feeling of entitlement normal for 5e players?
>>97746268ExactlyThe players avoided the fight and got all the rewards anyway
>>97742535sounds like your gm is a slave to a module or a book
>>97743249No.
>>97747576bro thinks you can earn stuff in make believe kek
>>97742535does the DM know he can just add more enemies and different types of enemies? Is he stupid?
>>97750774>dude just retcon something midfight to force an encounter shit dm moment
>>97742535I did that with a Sorc as well; DM planned to fuck us up with an insect swarm, but forgot he mentioned earlier that we were going into a swamp for the mission, so on swamp departure day I racked for swarms. When he threw his "surprise" hive at us, I casually turned myself into an Air elemental, stacked an electrical defensive touch spell on myself, and made myself a living bug zapper. Genocided the whole hive, DM called it and had nothing else prepped. That should teach him not to warn us about a future environment in advance.
>>97751514>had nothing else preppedSounds like a terrible plan. Was it just going to be a single encounter all session?
>>97752845My theory is he planned on us fleeing from the swarm to regroup and plan a different approach.
>>97753063Ah yes, the classic "play my story" approach to GMing
>>97742535I'm the dumb ass dm. "Why didn't the dm just bullshit a new encounter?" -because I use foundry and don't wanna have a group of guys twiddling their dicks while I slap some contrived bullshit together."Why didn't I just add more/different enemies?"They were in an airship sailing over an open ocean between Khorvaire and Xen'drik. Not a tone handy in that area. "Why did the DM give rewards?"Because the player used his brain, resources, and took the spell to counter a recurring threat that they've face 5 times before. That's good player behavior. "It's a cock ring"That's canonically true, now mortimer. Change it in your sheet. Yes, it still requires attunement. Follow up. I had a trio of airship pirates blasting cannons and force the party to engage in escape manuevers to survive. They did end up taking pot shots with a spell sniper/medical legolas combo, but for the most part, were battered af when they got to stormreach. Pic related: the little shit fuck who always fucks my shit.
>>97742750Actually based of the GM.He could have been a bitch but he gave it to you
>>97757277Hi dumb ass dm, I'm Anon!
>>97757277>"It's a cock ring">That's canonically true, now mortimer. >Change it in your sheet. Yes, it still requires attunement.Kind, I’d have made him use it as a Prince Albert. The difficulty of improvisation is why I’ve resisted my player’s desire to use web tools and maps. OTOH, if their next stop was a town you weren’t prepared to run, I completely understand.
>>97751478Who said retcon?
>>97751514Why would you need to prepare in advance for basic combat encounters? All you have to do is imagine something and give it whatever capabilities are appropriate.
>>97757277What do you mean, handy? You know the game is imaginary right? You can just make stuff up.
>>97757277It seems my DM found my frogpost....surely he's not going to tpk us this week for my low effort frog posting on his favorite board
>>97757277Next time a player stumbles into a hard counter to a big fight, let them have a big advantage instead of an autowin. Like for the faeries let them fumble with the Hallow spell for a round or two before realising what's what and dispelling or suppressing it. A few rounds of non-action form the enemies is a massive advantage in 5e, and will feel like a win instead of like they broke the game. You won't have to throw out an encounter, they will still feel clever.
>>97759081your done frognigger
>>97757277>That's good player behavior.I dont disagree with that. But there shouldn't be preset rewards like that, it should be a bonus for actually defeating the one who carries it.>>97759278Yeah that
>>97742805This. It's why we keep needing to have threads about railroading is bad.
>>97742805>>97742898>make-believers have entered the chatHey guys, did your shield that stops all lasers manage to stop timmy's laser that burns everything?
>>97760660like a video game? Why wouldn't they drop it when they die in any which way.
>>97758657>Why would you need to prepare in advanceBecause when I make a new character in foundry the sheet is completely blank and typing doesnt happen instantaneously.Shouldnt have to explain that, but I am dealing with a playoid.
>>97762230>drop it when they dieThe story as posted just said >We avoid the fight, still got lootMore details get added every post
>>97742880If you actually played games instead of just being handheld through somebody's garbage interactive fanfiction, you would know what he is saying. Do you want me to explain it for you in the terms that a child could understand?
If you can't read what OP wrote, you have brain rot. It's not exactly Herman fucking Melville level
>>97772767this board is by far the most autistic/smugredditor
>>97762693its called engagement someone who's been a frogposter/baiter for over a decade at this point you learn a little about how to keep a thread going and (you)'s flowing baby
>>97772268NTA but please explain for the sake of others. We can reference back to your post.
>>97757277You're an absolute retard for giving a reward. There is now way they could've died, so the enemy essentially just threw rewards at the party for nothing>>97743742It ABSOLUTELY is.
>>97778205>There is now way they could've died, so the enemy essentially just threw rewards at the party for nothingTHIS. FUCKING THIS. ABSOLUTELY FUCKING THIS THIIIIIISTHISHIST H I S
>>97757277Honestly DM, I think you did a good job based on what OP said.
>>97759278I do this. I learned it relatively late in my gaming career but it works like a charm.
>>97774013Yeah it's pretty bad, will agree with you there
>>97742535Reminder that most stories on here are literally made up, like OPs
>>97757277Good work m8 i hope the game continues well
>>97742535Story shitter problems womp womp.
>>97780320Sounds like you're projecting
>>97780373There's threads for gamists too. Don't know why you even give a shit but ok
>>97778205nope nope nope
>>97780373keep crying about cannon woman Castodies or something
>>97783554Try opening the actual rulebook idiot
>>97742750Loot from what? Didn't you prevent the monsters from showing up?
>>97751514>my DM prepared a statblock for some bugs for his weekly prep and nothing elseFuck. I thought i was lazy.
>>97783713retconned after revised versions came out
>>97742535Your DM is a retard. You didn't "ruin his game". He just lacks the cognitive ability to accept that players are allowed to come up with solutions to problems that he hasn't thought of and- what's more- should REWARD that creativity rather than being a pissbaby.>>97742560>>97742671>>97743144This is contriving some way to subvert player creativity. This is railroading. This is inferior and you should feel embarrassed for posting this. >>97742805People won't understand what you said. While I might have said it differently, you're spot on. Actual mouth breathers in the thread will struggle to understand this, though.>>97743239The DM is having a hissy fit. Read the OP.>>97743362Not quite. The DM clearly had an intended solution/encounter planned. The Players outsmarted him. He was too dumb to improvise a contrived work-around to the player ingenuity (as other midwits here have proposed). However that misses the point. The point is that the DM should enjoy when players think creatively to solve problems.
>>97785153Yawn. What a nothing of a post. Save us all the time of reading your drivel next time and just hit the back button. No one will get wanting of substance from your post but your incessant whining and severe inferiority complex
>>97785074It wasn't. "Willing" is the current version. Not having willing is the old version. Also NO version of it deals damage, so couldn't kill anybody
>>97785153Nothing presented was creative or ingenuity. It's literally just using a spell for its intended purpose. DM fucked it up by having the spell do MORE than it is intended to do while also not being able to adapt to information he forgot
>>97786134DM's are allowed to fuck up. Using a spell designed to protect against Fey or Fiends is a reasonably clever decision if you are picking up on the clues that they might be in the area. Is it some great feat of creative engineering? No. But we ought to encourage autonomous player problem solving without pre-written solutions to problems.>>97786026Filtered.
