What sort of RPGs have you played that put any mechanical emphasis on commanding a squad, warband, or army, /tg/? Was it good, was it bad, did you have any stand-out experiences that you feel like sharing?
>>97759040MechWarrior with BattleTech integration (2e preferred)fantastic gameplay, but at times it gets hard to constantly justify big stompy mech usagemy most successful game was one where the players were on the gladiator arena planet Solaris, trying to rig and finagle their way on foot through matches that are otherwise totally stacked against them, while trying not to damage the enemy mechs so that they can actually get quick access to superior partslasted 11 sessions before a clan star wiped them by constantly rolling headshots and running them completely out of edge (the "make that cunt reroll" metacurrency), so 2 players dead and the others so dispossessed they couldn't really proceed
>>97759040ACKS, love it.
Combat Command, solo gamebooks set in various literary settings where you use group tactics. And I can't fucking remember, it was a long time ago.
I found this very handy when 1st ed AD&D characters reached name level and got lands, recruited armies, etc. I particularly liked the importance of loyalty and bravery a character could instill in their troops. It encouraged players who wanted their characters to be great leaders to be mostly Lawful and Good in alignment, as it seems most troops tend to be more loyal to leaders who are trustworthy and kind, not backstabbing traiterous cheating Chaotic or Evil types. It also encouraged most players to avoid using their Charisma as a dump stat - having a high charisma character as a leader (Paladins, etc) meant that troops were more loyal and brave. A side effect of the morale rules was that taking out enemy general and kings could often cause.an enemy army to break and run, as could stealing their pay, sbotaging their food and water, starting rumours, etc, allowing a small force to often beat an overwhelming force by just destroying their morale before the battle even started..
>>97759563lol your a faggot
>>97759563Still waiting for Domains of War: Battles ported to ACKS II and maybe the naval book too before playing wargaming campaigns in ACKS.

>>97763773>Your shilling is disgusting.I'm not shilling anything, just responding to OP's question hi fishfag.>>97762764All the review I read about Battle System says it's terrible. What's your opinion on it? Have you played it?

>>97759563Not my favorite part of ACKS, honestly: I think figure scaling works better and is much simpler. Unlike fishfag, though, I won't throw a tantrum over the fact that you like the ACKS mass combat system. More power to you and have fun.
>>97759529>2 players deadI, too, think that the penalty for a player rolling badly should be death. Just having the character die is not nearly enough.
>>97764380While that is a sound principle, in that previous post those 2 players just happened to die of heart disease
>>97763632I heard they were planning some kind of Elves vs Dwarves large-scale wargaming campaign last year. I haven't heard anything about it since. Has that project been abandoned?
>>97759040>What sort of RPGs have you played that put any mechanical emphasis on commanding a squad, warband, or army, /tg/?First edition D&D — not AD&D 1e, that is the third edition of D&D: The actual 1974 first edition of D&D — was called by the authors a wargaming campaign, and the recommended number of players was 20 to 50. Those were the times!
>>97764402Baruch HaShem!

>>97764848I don't get why Battle System gets any hate at all. It's too big to just use it in the middle of an adventure, but for a pseudo-wargame it's actually pretty fun and a great change of pace for a session.
>>97764409>I heard they were planning some kind of Elves vs Dwarves large-scale wargaming campaign last year. I haven't heard anything about it since. Has that project been abandoned?I'm not sure, since all the information and rules about D@W is for Patreon subscribers only, for playtesting. The Elf book is still in the works and the Battles book is not even on the horizon, so it'll take a while before we hear more news about it...>>97764848I already told you on other threads: that's NOT the mass combat for ACKS!That's the "abstract" mass combat system to use when you don't want to play a wargame! The official mass combat rules for ACKS are the ones in Domains at War: Battles!
Is there any system where the base assumption is that each player controls a small squad, 3 to 5 guys or something
>>97764936Can't speak for the other Anons. From my own point of view, it's just worse than the alternatives. I don't hate it, though, nor do I hate you for liking it, unlike the subhuman in picrel who throws a tantrum every single time anything he doesn't like is mentioned.
>>97765078Advanced Squad Leader.
>>97765035>there's an even more needlessly complicated versionChrist on a stick.>>97765100You're the one spazzing out. There's like only a hundred people left in the world who still play ACKS, and it's getting more obvious you're the only guy who'd recommend the system here, ACKShill.
>Only a hundred people in the world play ACKSSo I'm hearing that we outnumber you 100 to 1 and you expect us to stop talking about it because baba gonna pee-pee if he hears about ACKS again?Talk about entitled.
>>97764936He probably just needed to pick a system to give a lower score than ACKS so ACKS wouldn't be last even though he inflated its score by 7 points.
>>97765177>>97765258Name a more iconic duo than fishfag and fishfag samefagging and talking to itself.
>>97765078Pokemon Tabletop United does that, but I don't think that really counts because you send your squad out one pokemon at a time.Which now that I think about it doesn't make any sense to do when exploring.>>97765258Weird that it'd be the one to catch stray shade.

>>97765078Are there any fantasy games that do anything like that? Having an Ogre Battle-esque deal of small squads working in concert would be cool.
>>97764848That looks tedious.
>>97766143Unlikely, because such small squads were not really used in antiquity and the middle ages.
>>97767023Well, sure, but that's why I asked for fantasy. Adding wizards and gargoyles and things like that would probably change the tactical landscape considerably.
>>97767023The middle ages had the Lance Fournier as a unit of men, usually a knight, adult squire, and then a couple of archers or some footmen or a lighter cavalryman that the knight brought along to military service. You collect up however many lances you can get and that gives you a well rounded block of fighting men without too much effort organizing them.
>>97767193Irrelevant.Lances didn't fight as a unit: Once battle started, they would split and merge with the other lances to form separate infantry, cavalry, and artillery formations. Likewise, the Romans also organised legionaries in contubernia, but that was only for the purpose of encampment organisation, erecting tents, cooking meals. In battle the smallest, fundamental unit was the maniple, about 120 men.In other words, lances and contubernia are logistics, not tactics, they're irrelevant for battlefield purposes.

One of the best systems I've played, ngl. Pokemon is good to get people to actually step out of the 5e sphere and get their toes wet.>>97765493Poke RPG baseline lets you control two Pokemon at the same time, although it's a much smaller and niche Pokemon RPG.Anyway, I don't mind people only being able to control one or two Pokemon at a time, when those Pokemon do much more than a random soldier or bandit.
If someone wants to play an RPG with associated mass combat rules that are clean, easy, and heavily playtested, Original Edition Delta + Book of War is an excellent combination.https://www.oedgames.com/Book of War uses units of 10 each.
>>97759563Lmao even
>>97762764>>97763793I haven't played Battle system, but I found the rulebook at a used bookstore and read it cove to cover. My conclusion was that it sounded so dogshit I would never bother trying it
Of rpgs with mass combat.I've tried Legend of the Five Rings, Qin: The Warring States, ACKS: DOW, and Traveller: Fifth Frontier War (1981 version, though I've heard goodish things about the new one).Of these I think Qin and L5R had the most interesting integrations between character and army fighting. Qin's mass combat is designed to evoke the feeling of strategists and generals crowded around a map or sand model moving tokens representing divisions or corps but it has options for heroes to get stuck in and depending where they are in the battle pretty much everyone gets to do cool wuxia shit, even the fangshi. L5R ties its honour and reputation system into how bravely characters fight in mass combat and samurai duels are encouraged. I will say that I actually like ACKs thing about only being able to directly command a certain number of people - so you actually have a chain of command (that theoretically could be disrupted, confused or co-opted). I think tying that into Qin's mass combat abstraction would actually be very interesting. For squad level command IIRC Only War assumes the players are a squad with a bunch of disposable troopers (who take bullets for them) in their unit and there's some implications in Twilight 2.2 that you can have a squad of NPCs fighting along side you.
>>97759040Really wish there was a good dedicated family of systems that allowed you to transition between scales fully. Yah old dnd HAD it, but you never actually see people using it practically, only hearsay.I guess the closes is Warhammer fantasy, Mordheim, and WFRPG. But even that isnt so much intentional but circumstantial. In fact, old world might tie more directly with mordheim and the wargames due to its stat blocks also having 3 as the base number.>>97759563>>97764429I occassionally hear people talking about the possibility in these systems in abstract, but I have heard almost no first hand experience with it from players. either here, youtube, or in person.
>>97791260WotC used the Chainmail name for a game in 2001 with simplified stats designed for warband play, but it didn't last particularly long. They recycled the concept for D&D Miniatures, which included 3.5e conversions for all DDM statblocks, and also got a 4e update.
>>97791260To be fair, there are a few but it's not the biggest draw. I think that we are getting Elves vs Dwarves kickstarter war the "before all others" book is finished which should be this summer maybe fall. Which will be a great way to show everyone how to play it. Though to be fair, playing it yourself is the best way to learn.
