This is a general about the game Go, also known as Baduk or Weiqi.

>Question of the thread: Does anyone on this board play Go? If so, whats your rank?

its more fun imo, and a lot more strategic if you are into that

also, its more balanced, has less draws and less memorization

Because chess is a dead boring game whose main practical function is becoming better at chess. Whereas go is mostly dead boring game whose main practical function is becoming better at go.

On the other hand, chess has the secondary practical function that if you get good at it you can make a living off it even if you start later in life. Whereas go has the secondary practical function that if you get good at it you can make a living off it only if you got good at it as a kid and joined a professional stable of trainee players as a kid except in a very abnormal reversal of typical Japanese racism against foreigners you can join as a foreigner at up to age 30 and usually lived with your mentor for years and qualified for the professional tournaments and if aren't one of the 3 or 4 people who qualify each year, you're fucked until next year, and like I said, age 18 is the limit.. Outside of East Asia there just isn't the money in competitions.

Because people might understand and want to touch your chess books because they might be in a language they understand and you might risk hurting you chess playing hand when you have to smack them but no one's even going to to try to pick up your moon rune book on go strategy.

People are under the misapprehension that learning chess makes you smarter, better at mathematics, better at problem solving, etc. but there is only weak evidence at best that it might have far transfer outside of its domain. That means while you might get better ability to recognise patterns, those patterns are restricted to recognising chess position patterns; your increase in problem solving is restricted to getting better at solving chess problems; getting better at mathematics after learning chess was noticed but students who spent that time getting taught mathematics got better at mathematics. Similar comments apply to go.

Learn go because you want to, it has no real benefit over chess.

What's the point of this if not to get anons to play each other.

I've always found Go to be far more dynamic than Chess. There's just a lot more going on, it isn't as linear.

In Chess you learn openings because both the viable and possible moves are quite limited.
In Go you learn shapes because it teaches you to recognize decent ways for the stones to play out over 10-20 moves, but you also quickly learn that the shapes are extremely modular and dynamic. This is not only because the various shapes on the board will ultimately collide, but also that you can adjust them in all sorts of ways to fit a different long-term strategy or short-term tactic.

do you have someone to play with
>>
>>97786150
Hahah. No. Well sorta. I play with my brother, who lives on the same property at me but in a different house. We play once every few months or so. Neither of us actually know how to play so its quite fun. Like two children playing chess. Once upon a time I actually tried to learn the game seriously, but once I realized I have nobody to play with in person I sort of gave up on the idea.
