This board is very critical of D&D despite it being the most popular system to use. The hate feels very forced?
>>97776735It's only popular because Hasbro has a lot of money to blow on marketing. As an obvious paid shill, you should know that.
>>97776735It's just basic contrarianism, midwits parroting "popular thing bad" and thinking it somehow makes them cool.
>>977767354chan is full of brainless contrarians, news at 11.
>>97776864Except in this case, the popular thing actually IS bad. Like, usually the most popular thing in any given category ends up being somewhere around the middle of the pack, but 5e is noticeably lower
>>97776735>McDonalds and Walmart are popular, how can you criticize them!
>oh yeah smart guy? if 5E is so bad, what do you play?
>>97776735Popular just means most used not good. Chopsticks are popular in asian countries.
>>97776735>despitePopular things always attract criticism, justified or not. How could it possibly be otherwise? Why would people line up to criticise niche things no one has heard of?
>>97776735People hate on DnD specifically because it's popular, not (just) out of contrarianism but because it's not by any stretch of imagination good enough to justify its popularity.
>>97776735The term 'D&D' covers more than seven game editions (so far), each oe a different game from the last, but all using the same title slapped on it because it is famous and sells. People usually tend to prefer what they grew up with, dismissing earlier versions as irrelevant and getting angry when another replaces the one they know and like. The constant replacement of 'what is played' in the search for profits by the publishers and their respective supporters is what creates much of the rage.Roleplaying also tends to attract a lot of autists - playing games in which you kill others for fun and profit doesnt tend to generate empathy or understanding for other points of view, inside and outside a game.
>>97776735I remember my 3.5 friends switching to Pathfinder because they agreed that it was better. 4th was bad. These are average opinions.
>>97776735Lessers fear the greatest
>>97776735You should eat shit. After all, billions of flies can't be wrong!
>>97777058>gives example that is both most used and goodJust because you can't use them doesn't mean they're bad gweilo.
>>97776735Just because something is popular elsewhere doesn't mean it's popular everywhere. Context of where is important to polls.
>>97777314>food analogyamerimutt, pls
>>97776735Tabletop RPGs are like programming languages. There are the ones people complain about, and then there are the ones no-one plays.
>>97776735There is a general disdain for d&d in general and 5e in specific, but it doesn't come from nowhere. I remember a period of time when I got into gaming where everything was d20 slop, which was annoying. There is also the tendency of d&d players (5e specially) to act like the problems of the system are actually problems of the whole hobby, which is very annoying. "Have you tried not playing dungeons and dragons," became a meme because people would either complain about thing specific to d&d, or try and contort d&d into service of something that it wasn't really good for. And, I mean... come on. This is 4chan. It's a sea of piss. Of course people complain about the most popular game. Duh.
>>97777396DnD is like Python - second best choice for wide assortment of applications.
>>97777408>There is a general disdain for d&d in general and 5e in specific,No there isn't. There's just a few contrarians who like to loudly complain in an effort to try and pretend there is a general disdain. There is a general appreciation for D&D here, and it is, without even a close second, the most played RPG on this board. Few (if any) actually think it's the greatest RPG of all time, but it's preferable over a considerable amount of the catalog.
>>97777072>it's not by any stretch of imagination good enough to justify its popularity. No game could be. That's not saying D&D is bad, far from it, but that no game could possibly be good enough to justify the total market domination D&D has, especially because so many games copy D&D up to the level of being outright clones. To "justify" its position in the market, D&D would have to be head, shoulders, torso, navel, and hips above all the competition, which is a tall order when anyone can just copy D&D up to its neck.Even if D&D was legitimately and objectively the greatest RPG of all time, that still wouldn't "justify" the Demolition Man Taco Bell market supremacy that it has. That makes it quite unfair to be upset about that, because we're not talking about anything really related to true "justice", just popularity.
>>97777457>No, it cannot be that multiple people do not like the thing *I* like! It must be one or two bad actors, ruining discussion! You're retarded. I'm sorry. It's likely terminal.
>>97777556>if I can't argue with what he said, I'll just make something up and clutch my pearls at that instead!
>>97776906Flash was also objectively awful as a game engine and yet look at what people did with it. For some reason DND is the game pop culture chose and never gave up on. Its what people now, and the comfort of it outweighs its many, many drawbacks.
>shill bait thread on a halfdead board
>>97777569There's nothing to argue with what you said. You are ignoring reality and trying to live in a hugbox where things you don't like must be untrue. I wasn't even saying anything bad about your super special guy game, I was just explaining the pushback it gets, and people like you are the reason why that push back exists. But I'm sure you'll have a great little green text >no ucomeback about how I'm seething or malding or whatever. Super great, love it.
>>97777595>halfdead boardIt's pretty much mostly dead nowadays, we have threads that are a month old and not even puckee threads last more than a few days now
>>97777597You being a contrarian hoping to pretend the most popular game on a board is somehow not the most popular game via autistic shitposting and gaslighting has no connection whatsoever to the quality of the game, and mostly just your quality as a person. You're shit.
>>97776735If you think popularity makes something good, I think your retardation might be terminal and incurable. You should also just stick to videogames.
>>97777678If you think popularity makes something bad, I think your retardation might be terminal and incurable.
My old GM switched away from non-5e systems TO 5e some time after he found a more successful career behind a desk.He finds 5e much more useful for social networking than any other RPG, because 5e has way more normies playing it, and normies are the people who actually dominate professional spaces.5e actually landed him important business contacts, something that all those non-5e games from before never did.
>>97777684Popularity doesn't make something bad, being bad makes something bad. D&D is, objectively speaking, a god-awful system.
>>97776735>forced>mUh CoMsPiRaCy How are you this retarded? >>97776864 and>>97776903 have it right. Very much a "/thread" on both of these.
>>97777723I've seen worst systems. D&D does what It dies pretty well, it's just not what you want.
>>97777723>objectivelyConfirmed as troll. Even though it was 99% certain without that, you had to throw that in there to remove all doubt. You troll about 5e because it's the game you've got the highest chance of getting a reaction from, and for no other reason. There's other far worse games, other games you personally would dislike, but you do not obsess about those; only the combination of 5e being popular AND you personally disliking it makes you troll as you do.
>>97777684Real original, OP. "No you!" was a real banger 20 years ago when I was in middle school.
>>97777885If you become upset by someone providing you with a mirror to let you see your own failings, perhaps it's not the mirror that's at fault.
