Heh.
>>97797362Haha nat 20 best thing lol
nat 20 does not mean automatic out of character success
>>97797362His dumbass character is an elf so it can be reasonably assumed he might have knowledge of ancient languages that might give a circumstantial bonus to succeed the check, which paired with a high roll could be sufficient to decode the runes.
>>97797373Not with that attitude
>>97797373D&D5E allows it
>>97797373Didn't AD&D just let you autokill on a 20?
>>97797447ad&d had no crits
>>97797456depends on if you mean 1 or 2
>>97797424It literally doesn't
>>97797362>bike cuck plays as a girlHeh
>>97797424I haven't read the rules but i doubt that. you either meet the skill check or dont. It's not an attack roll. The players also dont roll for a good chunk of skills, the GM does, but people either don't know or ignore it to move things along.
>>97797373No one reads the rules, they only think they know the rules based on what their favorite influencers make jokes about.
>>97797362Did this affect your game somehow, or are you just a nogames secondary who can only talk about influencers playing games?
>>97797362>calls for a roll>complains that the roll fails or succeedsDon't call for a roll if there's only one possible outcome.
>>97797362It's always possible for your dumbass character to have randomly learned something or have a stroke of genius.I don't see the issue.
>>97798184>Player: My Dumbass character is going to try and decipher the runes.>GM: Okay, roll int!>Nat 20>GM: Looking at the runes, you begin to recognise them... they appear to be the same runes your grandfather taught you when you were younger. Recalling those cherished memories, you begin to translate the runes.
>>97798184This is me with movie trivia.>>97798385>tfw Grandpa was a Cthulhu cultist
I love Dungeons & Dragons and all the epic zany situations my character gets herself in, just like me irl lol XD
>>97797859I don't know if they walked it back but it was absolutely part of the playtest material leading up to the 2024 revision.
>>97797424It explicitely doesn't
>>97797362I sigh every time this shit happens, it's one of the many reasons i end being a forevergm to avoid this kind of shit. A throwaway joke is fine as long as you then, immediately after, contextualize the die roll result accordingly to scenario and characters but, man, i've played in too many games where competent characters became clueless buffoons for an entire scene because of un unlucky roll (and vice versa). Last example was in the current game i'm playing in where, one of the pc (a fucking pirate) had to roll for using a fucking rowboat near docks and, since he rolled poorly, ended stuck in circle washed ashore. That shitgigglery wasted 10 fucking minutes of game time on something that was also completely inconsequential (no drawback happened in-game because of this senseless failure).
>>97797362Is that the Bike Cuck guy?
>>97797362> If a character has no chance of succeeding on a roll, you shouldn’t give them one>If you give someone a roll and they get a 20, they should succeed>If someone rolls without asking, then that roll didn’t count, and it’s doubly sad if they roll a 20 because they wasted it
>>97798878This.
>>97798789>ok, roll to not shit yourself
>>97798911Basically
>>97798184Other alternative, though more if it's not a time-critical clue, your character doesn't know, but he suddenly remembers that Random NPC Never Mentioned Before might be able to help. Basically, the Lando Calrissian rule.
>>97798818Looks like the hairstyle is different, and your image's hair color is lighter, but the hoodie is the same color and the facial hair and nose are the same.So who knows, really.
>>97797373If the DM says it does, it does. There are no rules, only what the DM feels like doing.
>>97798789>rolling for something your character should be proficient with>rolling for something inconsequentialAs much as I like shitting on D&D, that's directly the opposite what DMG says should happen.
>>97799347Never said it was something directly imputable to d&d, it's a system agnostic issue. To be fair it happens less with experience but if you don't figure this shit out by the third time tops imo you shouldn't be sitting in the GM spot.
>My dumbass character is going to try and decipher these runes>No, sorry Anon, that doesnt fit your character, I'm going to have to say noWow that was hard.
>>97799347Yeah but you can just rewrite the DMG if you don't like it, and the DM can just call for whatever roll he feels like whenever he feels like it, and anyone who doesn't like it can leave the table, so that means D&D is the world's greatest TTRPG with no problems whatsoever.
>>97799327>LOL LOOK AT THIS STUPID RULE ISNT DND SHITTY>Actually thats not a rule, it's a common misconception.>YEAH WHATEVER WHO CARES CAUSE NOBODY CARES ABOUT THE RULESKill yourself you fucking retard.Youre like the fucksticks that put money on Free Parking in Monopoly then bitch and moan the game lasts 3 hours
>>97798818Yes
>>97799398That's what everyone who defends D&D says.Just rewrite what you don't like.Just find a new group.D&D has no problems, you're just a hater.
>>97799405>Say stupid shit>Get called out for saying stupid shit>Feverishly move the goalposts because you have no argumentYou do this every fucking thread.
>>97799413Talking about D&D is worthless, because it has no design standards. It all comes down to changing what's written or changing your group or not using it.It's just the same regurgitated conversation over and over again, whether you like D&D or hate it, and there's never any resolution.
>>97797424As an optional house rule.
>>97799301...you can just look up Shen and see that he changed up his art style...he signed both.
>>97800126Who the fuck is Shen? We are talking about bikecuck here.
>>97800183That's his real name. Shen "Bikecuck" McDillon.
