So what exactly would a evil book look like?
What would be inside of it?

Excluding the obvious crap like
>Evil spells
>How to summon demons

I am thinking about a ideology like what would a book of evil actually say? Like some form of ideology of evil. What would be its premises?

something like lore from Sertrous (dnd 3.5 elder evil) about how mortals can manifest and use divine power and spells without the gods and how the power that be are trying to hide the human/mortal potential for their own sakes

but the only way the book described how to tap into your hidden potential is either super evil or at the very least very insane

I always liked how the Book of Vile Darkness is usually described; as a book filled with the thoughts and notes of notorious and evil individuals over centuries, always seemingly having a life of its own as it transports itself to particularly evil individuals to gain more dark knowledge for itself and spread darkness.

An evil book would look nice and sweet so that people not inclined to evil would open it and read it to succumb to it and spread evil more. People who already wanted to read it might be annoyed by its glamour of sweetness which is part of why it's so evil.

otoh, evil doesn't mean bad taste and evil people can still like cute things.

Whatever your GM or you, as a player, declare.
Which means: whatever is needed.

Have you tried playing games, OP? I mean I know this is a tall order, but still.

I've never understood D&D's schizo relationship with this concept. On the one hand, mortals used to be able to cast 10th level spells and could bend gods over a barrel and can apparently access the divine power of the multiverse directly by various means but it's just a side fact that never gets expounded upon in any way (least of all interesting).

The book is sentient, the pages only have the thoughts of the reader scrawled into it, the pages aren't in order it's a disorganized mess, while reading it the time jumps around and it's impossible to leave the book behind because the reader is no longer where they first started to read it, and by the time someone breaks away from reading it they've attuned an evil spirit that haunts the party.

So I did have this idea and it revolves around basically what is The Seal of Orichalcos or stone of Orichalcos in what essentially is the Orichalcos plot line from the anime.

At the start you basically think it is a evil stone spread by some insane cult who turns people evil.

Then you get to read or listen to the cult. And it is not the
>YES YES SPREAD EVIL DESTROY THE WORLD HAHAHAHA!
Talk. The cult dresses nicely in white (like Dartz from the anime) and the idea is simple.
The Orichalcos stone does not turn you evil it simply removes all restrictions from you.
Basically think of Ring of Gyges what would you do if you can do anything without any consequences? Now the "Oh no if I do this the police will kill me" is removed.

Always wanted to kill your parents however you where afraid of the consequences? Now you will.
It is basically the Ring of Gyges combined with the purge only you lose all restrictions from you.

Now still sounds like a magic stone who makes you evil.
However there is a difference you see the cult members are not like this. Why? Because they where not mass murdering psychopaths who where repressing their urges all their life so removing their inhibitions did nothing of consequence.

And here comes the cult ideology. They believe that they are cleansing the world of evil and creating a better tomorrow.

The plan is simple they spread the stone and unlock everyone. The evil people will kill one another and whatever is left are the most good people imaginable.

What do you think /tg/

>The bible is heckign evil!
Yawn
>Eat flesh and drink blood!
WEW I know the meme however that is literally
0.0128609% of the book! At best (4/31102 ) By numbers this book wants you to sacrifice animals and sprinkle their blood around the altar for it is a pleasing aroma to the lord.
> It's about raising the dead
Necromancy is forbidden in the bible!

>drink blood
Acts 15:20 And others forbig the drinking of blood
>What about
Bible contradiction or try to say jesus is different.

Very myopic view stemming from a narrow minded fool.

Probably unassuming. Just a well made little book that seems very easy to carry, pleasant to look at and comfortable to read. Nice font, matter of fact writing, clear diagrams. Ten ways to bind a soul to power your toilet is presented in the same manner as a shoe care routine or a detailed, oneiromemetic breakdown of why society is wrong and should really be burnt down. If it's an evil book of a wealthy man it'll be neater and of higher quality compared to a working warlock's manual, who might have all different scavenged sheets of paper in a cheap folder if he's truly poor. If it's devoted to an evil god it probably has devotional etchings and decorations though and all bets are off. Treasure binding with jet and baby fingers, etc. Over time it comes to dominate a room - maybe you're at home and you're always aware of precisely where in the house it is. Maybe the room seems dark and close except for this one book, which despite not shining with light stands out. I'll avoid posting a picture of talmudic interpretations for once.

You could find a translation of the Munich Necromancer's Manual and use that as an example with images of the original. It's Necromancy in the sense of 'forbidden and profane' vs more modern or divinatory necromancy though. Fascinating stuff. CLM849, google that. Or the Grimoire of Pope Honorius.

>> It's about raising the dead
>Necromancy is forbidden in the bible!
False equivalence there Anon. Raising the dead is a big part of Jesus' shtick. What's forbidden in the bible is divination by talking with the dead. The -mancy part means just divination. The raising the dead and animating undead part of the modern meaning of necromancy is a much later Medieval addition, not mentioned in the bible.

>So what exactly would a evil book look like?
Ether normal book making methods of the setting, it just having a title that hints at the content
OR
bound with human leather or similarly gross materials to visibly look like a horror movie prop

>What would be inside of it?
Depends on the tone you are going for and the kind of evil you are talking about. Is it mundane evil, or purely supernatural evil.
Examples of mundane evil:
>instructions on construction of a wildly unethical super weapon
>very convincing faked blackmail material of a beloved honorable rightful leader of the realm
>the communist manifesto equivalent that preaches a message of envy and resentment to intentionally maximize social unrest
Examples of supernatural evil
>reading the book out loud opens the gates of hell or setting equivalent
>filled with evil rituals of human sacrifice that promise supernatural power to those who follow the instructions
>forbidden knowledge that drives morals mad in a extremely destructive way if they try to comprehend it

All examples create a good mcguffin that can drive the plot, as if the players ignore it or do something else such mcguffins will cause major trouble later in the background.

You have to remember your overall objective in adding a evil book to the setting. It's to cause conflict and drive the plot.
If your evil book doesn't do those things then it's just fluff and you shouldn't put much effort into it, or even remove it entirely.
