I'll start>D&D 5E is a heroic fantasy game (I didn't say good), trying to do anything else should have you using a different system.
5e is the best RPG for a new player to get into
>>97801163Nah, it's BRP, no contest, or any derivative.Because everybody understands percentages out of a hundred.
>>97801163In my experience a extremely simple rules light system like Risus is FAR better to get new players into trying TTRPGs.Only once they are aware of how fun it can be will they be willing to put effort into actually reading and doing math. At which point they might be ready for systems that require more of them, like 5e. The vast overwhelming majority of totally new players I have personally played with will not pick up a book or read even relatively simple rule unless they already know for a fact that the effort is worth it to them beforehand through direct experience of having fun. So I start them with a Risus one shot or mini-campaign, then depending on how they like it, what part they liked about it, and most importantly how much effort on their end they are willing to invest, I will steer them to try other game systems like 5e.
>>97801259Lol fucking stupid
>>978013535e is popular, you can find a group to play with easily, and the rules aren't that complicated, there's no trap options for classes, and it will teach foundation knowledge to take into other systems. Everyone who prides themselves in playing other systems started with D&D.
>>97801399I started with VtM in the early 00s.Most of the people I know IRL started with 40k or Warhamer Fantasy.Warhammer is arguably far more popular than D&D at this point, especially with WotC shitting the bed at every turn. The rules are extremely complicated to someone who has never read TTRPG rules before. I am talking about total noobs here. Not people who already have a grasp of how TTRPGs work in general but just haven't played before. There is a massive diffrence between someone who never played but gets it and someone who fundamentally doesn't get it and hasn't ever played anything more complicated than children's board-games like candyland. My method reliably can onboard and retain total noobs. Your method does not. At all. Ever.
>>97801399>and the rules aren't that complicatedCompared to what. Other dude is talking about a intro game system that in total takes like 3 or 4 pages. The player's handbook is a fucking textbook. Compared to GURPS 5e isn't that complicated, but compared to basically any actually rules lite system it's complicated.
I would prefer it if people didn't scalp.Post a take colder than that.
>>978011635e being the average newfag's first system is why the RPG scene is in the state it's in and why all the most successful competitors are largely just trying to offer people an alternative to 5e that is similar enough to make 5e retards feel at home.
>>97801399>5e is popular, you can find a group to play with easilyWhile true, that doesn't make it a GOOD game to start with. It makes it an EASY game to start with.>and the rules aren't that complicatedOther systems are simpler, require less reading, are often contained in a single book, and do not overwhelm players with decades of sacred cow shit that is a certain way because that's just what the lifestyle brand demands.>there's no trap options for classesEven in 5e, there are plenty. >it will teach foundation knowledge to take into other systems.5e does a very poor job of teaching how to play and run RPGs for someone who is completely ignorant of the entire hobby.>Everyone who prides themselves in playing other systems started with D&D.And yet they still felt the need to leave and never look back. I started with 3.5, but when Fantasy Craft came around, my group switched over and never once felt the need to ever crack open another 3.5 book.
