Would you rather Game Master for the rest of your life, or only be a player for the rest of your life? Personally, it's better to reign in hell than serve in heaven, so I'd be a forever GM.
>>
They call it the curse of the DM. What it is, is the realization that you run the types of games you wish you could play in. There's no other way for your ideal game to exist.

>reign as gm
You either play shitty games or run shit games.

I'm already the forever GM, but if I could have a group that showed up for every session, ready and willing to play, I'd GM for them until my dying days.

If i have to choose one then GM it is, i rarely get satisfied with being a player, mainly because i never met a GM that ran a game in a way with which i could engage completely. Like, i can tell a mile away when they're using illusionism and quantum ogres, especially when they're obviously railroading. The most annoying part is when you're also the only one at the table noticing.

I'd rather play but I'm the only good GM so either I am a player in bad campaign or a GM of a bad player party.
>>

I would try my hand at DMing if I had the time or a group that would take the game seriously.
>>
I already basically am a forever GM, but I don't mind. I would like to play more aside from the occasional one shot someone else brings, the problem is the only campaign where I got to do that was in D&D 5th ed.
>>
DM honestly. I've enjoyed every game I ever DM'd, while I only like half the games I've played in. Plus, my players really enjoy my world, or so I believe, and I'd rather bring joy than to try to siphon it for myself.

It's been a long while since I was a player (not couting solo). What do you mean I'd have to wait for my turn? And put up with the GM's obviously subpar ideas compared to mine?
>>
Jokes on you, I mostly play solo these days so I am both the gm and the player.

That said worldbuilding is a constant side hobby so if I had consistent players then I would likely always be cooking up something for them to do or new area to explore. Though admittedly my organization isn't great so running games is often stressful to me when I do it. So much wrangling schedules and being the one to hold people accountable is a massive pain in the ass. If I had to do that forever, doing all the out of game management needed to get a game together and keep it together then I would straight up quit ttrpg altogether.
I like the actual game part, playing or running is both fun, but I hate group management and human relations shit so fucking much. Even with my actual irl friends and family it's a pain in the ass that makes it not worth being the host even if I am GM for the session. But with people I ain't tight with it's agony.

I want to believe we shuld focus on the good parts anon, the out of table drama is the price we sometimes have to pay. Honestly, managing schedules between family and work has been getting harder and harder, but we're still pushing through to have a nice night every week. I've had people fight outside of the table for the most inane shit, so they can't be in the same room, but I started ignoring the most troublesome one (when it comes to games) and keep playing with the other.

>if I had consistent players
I feel that. I had been putting together some not very deep setting for another project and ended up recycling it for a couple of filler one shots when we need to pause the ongoing campaigns. People liked it, but I don't want to put in more work just for one game every couple of months.
>make it a full campaign then
I could when the ones we're playing are over, yes, but then I would have to write up a setting guide or something to show the character building options, and I don't feel like doing it just for a single guy to read it. I have a few players who can't be bothered to read anything beyond the char cheet I put in front of them.
I could come up with a simplified pamphlet or something I guess.

Being a DM is an amazing experience. You can craft a world and let your friends loose within it. Seeing the choices their characters make and how they shape the setting is always a delight. You can play so many NPCs, so many competing factions, can hold onto long running consequences and truly push the limits of your imagination and creativity.

With that said, I'd rather be a player

I already am the forever DM. I play sometimes when a player REALLY wants to run something. But it's pretty rare. I like DMing. Honestly I don't even have that much interest, in playing.

Definitely GM.

I'm almost always the one who rounds up everyone anyways. Labyrinth 40th anniversary screening? I'm the one asking everyone to go. Halloween party? I'm the one hosting.

As a forever player I'd have to wait until someone else took initiative so at most it would be like a 5E game every 4 years.
