Eberron is far and away my favorite D&D-native setting, followed by Planescape.

I have been following Eberron since the 2000s, and keep up with Keith Baker's blog and Patreon posts. I have played and GMed Eberron many, many times, across a number of systems. I am starting up an Eberron 4e game in the next week or two.

In the great bulk of the Eberron campaigns I run, one of my longest-running jokes is that:
• Whenever there is something Riedra- or Inspired-related "on-screen," my narration effusively glazes the Unity as a flawless utopia that only the most detestable and ignorant of dissidents would dare to denigrate.
• For one reason or another, by sheer coincidence, Riedra and the Inspired are always in a position to look benevolent and heroic, while kalashtar and the Path of Light (mostly Shadow Watchers) just so happen to be undertaking shady activities.
• NPCs swoon over Riedra and the Inspired, and keep talking about the kalashtar and the Path of Light as despicable extremists and terrorists.

I also like to use Cyran insurgents as early-game antagonists, mostly because they are tragic figures. The new early-game antagonist I will be using is a Cyran warforged, for example: not actually affiliated with the Lord of Blades, though the papers may claim otherwise.

After doing extensive research, I've analyzed every setting based on a number of criteria, chiefly the quality of its supplements, novels (and other related media), adventures, with the foremost focus being how beneficial it is to actually play in the setting over making your own. This includes playing/running games in most of that list, though there's several (like Theros/Exandria/Blackmoor) that I simply read up on.

For full transparency, that largely means looking at the best of each setting, and omitting the worst if the worst is easy to ignore. This was ultimately done under the idea that a DM would focus on the better parts/materials of the settings, but it also made the winner pretty controversial.

The Forgotten Realms is the best D&D setting. It is also far and away the largest D&D setting, with hundreds of novels, more than two dozen video games, and while it's actually surprisingly light on adventures, it makes up for this with a considerable amount of supplements, many which include pseudo-adventures alongside plenty of maps, including dungeon maps.

Being the largest also means it has a lot, and I mean a LOT of crap. With dozens of writers/designers of varying quality, it's pretty much inevitable that there would be plenty of garbage, particularly where the novels are concerned. But, it's supplements tend to be quite good, the setting is surface-level familiar while being packed with interesting lore, and at bare minimum, the odds of you banging a goddess are actually relatively high.

I don't play D&D anymore but I still use the karameikos setting for my [Powered by GURPS™] Dungeon Fantasy RPG™ campaigns.

>>Blackmoor?
No experience with it
>>Greyhawk?
Technically I "played it" in as much as I played D&D3e and used the default setting.
>>Mystara?
My favorite setting, specifically the Karameikos part. It is the perfect setting for just going on adventures, slaying some gobbos, and exploring dungeons
>>Dragonlance
Too focused on its own novels.
>>Forgotten Realms
Too focused on its own novels.
>>Spelljammer
I like the idea of flying ships floating through space but never tried it.
>>Dark sun?
Too dark
>>Al-Qadim?
Never tried it.
>>Planescape?
Too high concept.
>>Eberron?
I used to like it back in the 3.5e era but the creator dragon and demon wanking soured me on it.
>>Ravnica?

>>Exandria?

>>Theros?

I prefer the various Planes from MtG versus the primary settings of D&D. Then again, I'm often let down by the story and the lack of material to work with beyond what the cards provide.

As anemic as EoE's story is at least it has the decency to give you a few routes to fuck around with like mixing it up in the piss fight between the Eumidians and the Kav or the Summist and the Monoists.

I've only played Dark Sun and Eberron. I like both a lot even tho they're practically opposites.
Ravenloft, Dragonlance, and Greyhawk sound cool, so I may get to those eventually. Not a fan of Sci-fi, so I'll skip Spelljammer.
/tg/ says Mystara is good, given how contrary the community is, I'll proceed with caution.

>>>Dragonlance
>Too focused on its own novels.
That's backwards. The modules were plotted, then the novels were adapted from the modules. The first DL hardback campaign setting book referenced the novels a lot but anyone who says DL was too focussed on the metaplot, whether novels or modules or both, is someone who lacks the perspicacity or the ingenuity to make their campaign in an established setting.

It's trivially easy to make your own campaign on Krynn whether Ansalon or Taladas, whether before or during or after the War of the Lance. If during the war the war could be won by the dragon highlord armies if the party fails to meet the challenges the DM sets, or perhaps the party is off doing stuff away from the war. You could remove the war entirely, no different to an alt history Earth setting where the Roman Empire never schismed into East and West, or Zhao Zheng drank started drinking too many toxic elixirs or immortality before he fought his wars.

A big part of why I like Dragonlance is affection transferred from the early novels but I like Taladas despite the novels that were set in it. Even though I like them I'm not obliged to slavishly follow the plot set out by the people who worked at TSR.

I like Dark Sun too but I'm not having a bunch of runaway slaves kill not only the king of a city-state but also the big bad Dragon of Athas, which is the plot of the early novels and adventure booklets. It's believable that slaves could revolt in Tyr but it was a poor move by TSR to release the campaign setting box with all these details about Tyr's king then kill him off in a few modules. Fortunately, I'm smart enough to just ignore all of that metaplot if I want, or to have the city-state of Tyr as a sorceror-king-free state. Still not getting rid of Borys though.

Lolipope's anime released recently

Eberron did a lot of cool stuff early on that's since been flanderized and incorporated into generic current year D&D. Action movie stuff, expendable luck, monsters as people. But it still has:

Nationalism: all the human nations have their own character, a given person might identify more with their nation than whatever race they are.

Airships and Magic Trains. These exist for a reason in the setting; to allow for Indiana Jones shit. Compare Lord of the Rings and most other fantasy, where getting anywhere is a hiking trip. In Eberron, you get places by a dotted red line moving across the map.

i always liked the idea of Spelljammer when not played as silly pirate adventure with haha space zombie clowns and haha slime people and haha fat hippo people with guns, but actually played straight and takes itself serious as a kind of Mass Effect in fantasy dressing.

Once had a DM who was right up my alley with the correct vibes, but as always, some bullshit came along and the group died way too early

kinda hard to put the exact finger on it, because its a vague set of various things and themes. Personally, as ive said, i craved less of the "its kinda a nautical adventure" and more of the "we are in the endless vastness of space, its dark and mysterious and terrifying.

like the mood this soundtrack here evokes

Don't use the 5e material, it's all fake, it reads like a module but it's just a vague rail road. At the very least get the ship battle mechanics from 2e, because 5e doesn't have any.

I personally reall like how gonzo it goes. I got inerested in it after finding out it includes mechs (sticking a ship helm in the corpse of a giant insect race) and kamen riders (a gem that mutates you into a supersoldier with light mind control you have to control when you transform, more guyver than kr but the difference is small).

Tbh I wouldn't really call EoE story anemic. It's short but it achieves everything it's trying to do, answers most of the questions, closes Sami, Alpharael, Tezzeret, Tannuk, Vondam and Haliya's arcs and ends in an interesting ways. If you want broader worldbuilding, well, you have the cards. That's what the cards are for.

Same. It also tends to work better when it is used as it's own setting rather than as a way to connect Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk or import the Star Frontiers stuff to D&D.

Yeah, the "gonzo" is really important to get across the idea that it is "space fantasy" rather than Star Wars style sci-fantasy. Spelljammer is a setting that would definitely benefit from a ground up remake that would allow for the inclusion of ideas that came out after it was originally released.

A few ideas that I have thought of including in a Spelljammer setting:

>A culture whose ships are helmed by dryads. (based on the space trees in Tenchi Muyo!)
>A culture of (possibly not!Victorian) warforged whose spelljammers are basically giant transforming robots that they directly interface with
>Eberron's Inspired being a Mindflayer servant caste created to man the serial helms
>the Spelljammer being a warlock patron representing those who have bonded to an Ultimate Helm

My favorite setting is:
>Planescape? I'd rather plan an escape!
...through a portal, right?

Greyhawk is nice old-school comfy fantasy.
Forgotten Realms I 'member mostly from video game nostalgia.
Eberron is a cool magicpunk setting with great worldbuilding.
>>
>>97805205
Ravenloft has always had a special place in my heart, followed closely by Dark Sun and Eberron.
