And being grimdark for the sake of being grimdark because 40k = grimdark is most of the time just cringe. Also the Imperium isnt and never was in "decline". It has been trudging along for 10.000 years and might as well do another 10.000. The setting was never moving towards the Imperium disintegrating, the stagnation was the point. Its why players were justified to play the same battle over and over again technically. If anything 40k always had a hopeful aspect since the 2e Emps retcon making him a demigod waiting to return.
