>create a system
>it's good
>but have a huge ego and expect the system to become popular through word of mouth
>do 0 PR for the system
>do Pikachu face when the system tanks
Literally the story of every new indie system in the last 20 years. What's wrong with people in this industry? Does this industry only attract retards or what? It seems that way because only DND has created an official online service, while the rest believe that Internet is something secondary in the 21st century.

Except, you know, the gazillion of them that was commercially successful. And usually achieved that, because their creator had a huge ego.
A typical fail system is a half-assed game that someone wrote on the napkin, then re-typed to Word, saved as PDF and published for 25 cents on drivethrouRPG, being lucky if the game earned 5 bucks within a decade.

Anything would be better than dnd, but dnd has a PR team and people who are not puritanical assholes, so they use the possibilities of the Internet to the fullest, while the rest of the industry is cavemen who continue to insist that in the 21st century their product should remain analog only.

>At GenCon 2012 it was announced that CCP Games/White Wolf would not continue to produce table-top RPGs.[citation needed] Onyx Path Publishing, a new company by White Wolf Creative Director Richard Thomas, purchased the Trinity games and Scion from CCP and became licensee for the production of World of Darkness titles (classic and new), as well as Exalted. Onyx Path does not hold a license to the Mind's Eye Theatre titles.
So much success

Where did you get this idea? Most TTRPGs are put out by hobyists that just want to share their stuff. Most of the rest are hobbyists hoping for a small amount of passive income from writing up the work they already did on their game for their group.
Hardly anyone even expects to quit their real job, because there's no real money in them.

You literally listed random games that nobody would have heard about if they were handled the way OP or the original anon described.
Congrats on proving his point.
>>
>>97821411
Marketing would cost me more than I would make selling
>>
>>97821492
Onyx path published CoD for like fucking decade. Is that not success to you?
>>
>>97821519
So, by your metric, any store that isn't Walmart and any restaurant that isn't McDonalds is a failure?
>>
>>97821683
>random games
These aren't games, these are companies that own games. So you're officially retard and tourist.
>>
>>97821726
Yes. Cry about.
>>
>>97821492
And then OPP, employing largely former WW employees, continued publishing WoD and Exalted, which people continued buying and playing. I don't know why you're mentioning White Wolf, an established company started in the early 90s, in a discussion about indie systems in the last 20 years, though.
>>
>>97821759
You seem to be the one that's purposefully decided to live by a criteria that pisses you off.
>>
>>97821759
What if instead of crying about it we just reject your criteria?
>>
>>97821791
>>97821793
Then you will be retards who ignore reality and live in a fictional world. Well, at least it checkout.
>>
>>97821759
kek
Well fair enough
>>
>>97821830
The reality of you ascribing nonsensical criteria to other people's hobby projects?
>>
>>97821880
>created companies
>I swear it's just a hobby
You really don't have a brain in your skull. How are you even alive?
>>
>>97821830
Trying to argue that a famous chef in some Michelin restaurant is a failure because he's not flipping burgers at McD's instead and therefore contributing to the corporate glory of that superior culinary entity is one hell of a hot take. Personally, I think a business is a failure if it doesn't make a profit and success if it does, and that in the case of small businesses the standard for sufficient profit and therefore of success is "enough for the owner to make a living", but that's just me.
>>
>>97821890
RPGs are a hobby for a lot of people,,sure, including people who make some money but not a living off the hobby. As for people who do make a living off RPGs, well, that's success right there. Why woukd someone who can make a living doing something he actually enjoys doing care about WotC's revenue?
>>
>>97821926
>but not a living off the hobby
>Annual revenue $4,705,525
Ok retard.
>>
So what's the best way to advertise to people that are interested in traditional games exactly then?
Beyond the whole "Well you start by being a multi-billion dollar corpo and-"
Asking since I've got a substack that I want more people to subscribe to.
>>
>>97821914
You are a disingenuous faggot, how about to make normal comparisons and say that Gordon Remzi is more successful than a noname Michelin chef?
>>
>>97821952
If you were able to read that particular part of one sentence, how come weren't you able to read the rest of the post?

>>97821991
That'd be a better comparison if the argument had been that WotC is nore successful than, say, FFG, rather than that FFG - or "any store that isn't Walmart and any restaurant that isn't a McDonalds" - is a failure.
>>
>>97821411
Are these "good systems" in the room with us right now?
>>
>>97821991
>Gordon Remzi is more successful
But he doesn't work at McDonalds, so you can't say he's successful!
You see how stupid that logic is?
>>
>>97821411
>>create a system
>>it's good
>It is literally just roll ability and attack roll again but in a slightly different way
And basedfaces in tg will suck the developera dick forever.

First - have a normal online store and online service for the game, it's the 21st century for fuck sake. Second - don't make the bare bones system, most people dont have time to make monsters, NPCs, campaigns, adventures, econters, etc. for a new game, these are the tasks of the authors. Never stop making new content. Third - try to conduct an advertising campaign to the best of your ability. This also includes novelizing your setting, literally all the big players on the market are successful solely thanks to tons of books written about their universe and other multimedia. If you want to make miniatures, also include miniatures ready to play out of the box, don't listen to stupid faggots who built their entire identity around miniatures. I'm not saying you can completely ignore them, just have common sense and give people have a choice - those who just want to play should buy ready-made miniatures, those who want to do everything with their own hands should buy bits, it will increase your audience. And if it's all too hard and too much work for you, then change your mentality and tell yourself that as long as your project is making some money, you're successful. Or even tell yourself that you're successful simply because you released your system, who cares, it's your life.

>Gordon Remzi
Who?
