Anybody on /tg/ collect Gunpla? I'm trying to get playtester impressions on a homebrew wargame I'm working on, and the handful of people I have testing it aren't providing meaningful feedback fast enough. Homebrew wargames thread too, I suppose.

First thing that comes to mind is how do you measure distances and account for size with no bases?
>>

Distance is in inches, and the idea is that you measure any lateral movement from the apparent center if you're looking down on it. So far, it works pretty well for the beer and pretzels kind of game this is, although I imagine it wouldn't fly at all for hardcore competitive play.

Ok, but the thing is, for a game where models can be posed/built differently and have different bulk, the base size is supposed to be the defining factor. That's what BFG did, for example: models were just there to look cool, the bases were the actual models on the mechanical side, you could play with bases with the ship class/name written on them if you wanted.
I stress this because the main thing to account for in a game using models like this is that scale wouldn't translate well, you would need to play in your courtyard to have something that makes sense.

I no longer have any of mine, but I used to have a few. My friends and I used battletech rules to skirmish with them.

Fair concern, but less relevant than you'd think. It's functionally a line-of-sight game with the exception of a couple of exceptionally low ranged weapons. On top of that, I've got provisions for floorgame play built in. It should be noted that this game is specifically for 1/144 scale, so about ~12mm, so the scaling issues aren't so pronounced. Line of sight is true line of sight from a unit's head, and the posing serves actual mechanical purposes (you need to be able to physically point the muzzle at something to make a valid shot, for example), so in practice the lack of bases works for the game rather than against it. If you can think of any way I could post the rules in the the treat, what with PDFs being banned now, it would probably make more sense.

Ah, if it's a case of having funcionally unlimited range because you're relying on los it makes sense. The los starting from the head and posing the weapon sound cool.
>any way I could post the rules
Maybe some hosting site, can't really say, been out of the loop.

I did for a while. Havent bought any recently though in the last past like 3 years. could dig them out from storage. Took this pic back in college.

First thing that comes to mind is the scale of the engagement, due to the size and buying indivigual models, assumedly it would have to be pretty low scal like maybe 2-6 models per side. which seems like a skirmish style game and almost teetering on single entity control rpg. Regardless, could be interesting, always really liked the combat dynamics and factors in play in the Universal Century setting in specific. Minovsky particle interference making balloon decoys, wired drones, and other things more viable. Just wish that more combined arms tactics were involved rather than relying on the big main character mobile suits, some of the coolest scenes involve ship captains executing tactics using various factors including the ships themselves.

Doesnt seem like it needs to be an issue depending on how its set up, some games like lion rampent just require units to be in a 6 inch circle. Which should cover everything besides really fat ass mobile armors or you are for some reason playing in perfect grade gunpla. You could have different sized unit circles to compensate, 3 inch 6 inch and 9 inch.

also, nice quads.

Very nice digits.
Look for specific issues and prompt for them, for instance with feedback forms.
If possible record games and watch the recordings so you can see how they played and how that fits your expectations. Being there to watch will affect things so it isn't ideal, though obviously that depends on your resources.
Playtesting is work, so compensate them for doing it. That's more likely to be buying pizza for the group or something than actually paying a wage, but do something to acknowledge their effort.

Mediafire maybe?

Funny enough, no circles have been necessary thus far. The thing that usually necessitates that, melee, is instead handled via the physical reach of that unit.

Lmfao, the best way to have a fun wargame is to make sure 40kuckolds never find out about it

at least in lion rampant its not a physical circle, just a hypothetical 6 inch blob centered on a single model. It just makes it so that distances are roughly regular. a half of an inch this way or that doesnt really matter if you arent doing facing shenanigans where you incorporate units turning their front.
>>
>>97836190
There's facing insofar as if your articulation can't point at something or position a weapon, you don't have a valid shot or melee, but differential armor or anything complicated like that. The mediafire does seem to work, since I'm seeing one download of the rules, so the doc might provide more insight. I suppose the rule for determining reach sort of acts as a roundabout imaginary blob with different sizes per unit?
>>
>>97836100
What the fuck are you even on about?
>>
>>97836239
>There's facing insofar as if your articulation can't point at something or position a weapon, you don't have a valid shot or melee
Sounds like it could be a real pain if it was played super competitively and legalisticly (THe GM sniper 2 might become meta because its articulation is more flexable than any other or something as an example), but could be neat in a more casual atmosphere.
>>
>>97836498
>in a more casual atmosphere
That seems to be the case so most points of concern are moot I guess.
>>
>>97836498
Less than you'd expect, actually. You tend to get maybe a couple more degrees of field of fire on a newer kit as opposed to something old as dirt, like the new Zaku II kit vs the old ancient HiZack kit. But >>97836511 is correct, this is meant as a casual beer and pretzels game as opposed to the usual Warhammer-oid hyper-competitive faire.
