What is the most kino BBEG archetype?
>>97837876the villain who has their hand in all the cookie jars, and confronts the party in a game of wits, proving that they're right, and the party should bow out
Only fags say "bbeg".
>>97837887So Mastermind villain?
>>97837876Abaddon the Despoiler and everything about him. He's such a compelling and nuanced character and you should really check out the Black Legion Books. Seriously, they're great.
Foreign Local Lord with full harness. He should be in conflict with our Local Lord who may also have full harness.
juggernaut fighter + mage unstoppable force evil king
>>97838001Sounds like Ganondorf
>>97837994I like villains with sympathetic motivations, like Magneto.
>>97837982idk what that is, I call it The Stan villain
>>97837994Fuck off aaron
>>97837904Yet you are the one who sucks black cocks
>>97838000This is the true answer, the other children have it wrong.
>>97837876Personally I like the kind who can't be fucked to deal with anything outside of his lair directly so sends a endless stream of bad guys and monster of the week threats because the throwing masses of evil meat at external problems worked totally fine until the heroes/players got involved. Basically the only way to stop the threat for good is to confront him on his extremely well prepared home turf where he is at his strongest. So the heroes are forced to get stronger and do quests to prepare themselves for what would be certain doom if anyone else even thought about attempting it.It's fun to play, it's fun to run, the stakes are clear and the long term objective is always looming in focus and the source of all the minor problems leading up to the final fight. It can also be scaled to whatever campaign length you have to work with.Basically Saturday cartoon villain plot structure.
>>97839615So Overlords?
>>97837876Perhaps it is my own arrogance, my own bravado, that has brought us here, to this crossroads. The question is... where to go from here? We've spoken of fate, of prophecy. Have I traveled this road too long to turn back? Perhaps I have no choice but to continue on to the end...[He bows his head, his shoulders sagging] So many years I've raged against the living. All those years, and the distortion was in my own soul. No man can see the nature of his flaws with diseased eyes... the contradiction lies within me. I thank you... and I'm sorry. So very, very sorry. Perhaps some souls are born into death... they never knew how to live... Goodbye, traveler. My road ends here... I wish you luck on yours...
>>97837876Guy who has been evil for so long that he forgets why he turned to evil in the first place
>>97839841Sure I guess
There are only four timeless archetypesThe Great BeastThe Cult LeaderThe Dark KingThe Evil Sorceror
>>97840198>The Dark KingWhat does this mean, like a literal tyrant like William the Conqueror?
>>97840206It's a vague broad Archetype on purpose. One with power of authority who abuses that power or tries to impart it upon others against their will.
>>97840198What about the Master Illuminati Conspirator?
>>97840284Cult leader
>>97840410It's not the same. You can be a Master Conspirator without being a Cult Leader.
>>97840412If you wield esoteric knowledge to control forces beyond the understanding of most, then you are an evil sorcerer.
>>97840198How about the Evil Artifact?
>>97840943If it gives unnatural power to an individual to enact their will, it is an evil sorcerer. If it dominates or replaces individual will or is simply a weapon of terrible power, it is a dark king. If it corrupts a willing populace or secretive group, it is a cult leader. If it simply is and it's very nature causes harm to things around it, then it is a great beast.
>>978378763 competing factions with goals and means in the world with overlapping and antithetical desires that involve the various dungeons, lairs and player activity in a reactive and living gameworld.
>>97840198>beastyeah figures>cult leaderyeah i guess influence through network but no reigns of power>dark kingyeah just imagine every final fantasy emperor type character>evil sorceroroften to either make use of the beast or resurrect/bring over the dark king, of the four i think they're the worst or just difficult to make on big scale
>>97837876The Sauron type that twists and corrupts beings and shit for their dark designs is an old one die a reason. BTW, I want to make my own BBEG a being of corruption and madness that twists others for their incomprehensible agenda (no one is fully sure if they want to twist the entire world as an end goal, or to destroy it utterly once said corruption is complete), what do I need to consider?
>>97837876A threat that the player characters encountered earlier, but didn’t prioritize at the time.
Evil primordial god that the good gods are scared of but still want to fight.
The dragon, that's all you need, fuck you. So much of modern convention is to always replace the dragon, or great demonlord or w/e with some humanoid guy.
>>97840206>What does this mean, like a literal tyrant like William the Conqueror?KARA BOGA
>>97837876My favorite antagonist archetype is the ruthless tyrant that is actually working hard to keep something much worse at bay.
>>97848071Ah yes, the Blizzard villain.
>>97851365>Blizzard villainThey do it that often?
>>97854039They did it with the fucking Overmind from Starcraft, in the same expansion they made Kerrigan into Jesus.
>>97837876The eldritch horror impossible to fully understand
>>97857737I was thinking the Sanderson's Mistborne route. The kind that enslaves, not kill. But yeah.I had such a plot for a Wakfu game (using DnD 4th edition's structure because Wakfu is literally a turn-based MMORPG) and gave myself the challenge of a Iop antagonist that made sense. So that was it.I was gonna make her completely aware of tropes, yet completely oblivious to how it applied to the PCs.> Almost defeat the party in the intro, tell'em if they were heroes, something would happen to spare them before she finishes them off. Something happens, she leaves the execution to her soldiers. Heroes prevail while she makes her escape.> Her soldiers wear open-face helmets, but she doesn't care remembering faces.... that sort of thing. In the end, when she died, she was relieved. Dying words were an heads-up.

>>97842339>>97842339FF1: Dark Knight, DemonFF2: Evil Sorcerer-KingFF3: Evil SorcererFF4: Dark Knight, Space AlienFF5: Cursed tree turned Evil SorcererFFMQ: Evil Sorcerer-KingFF6: Court Jester turned Evil SorcererFF7: Space AlienFFTactics: ReligionFF8: Evil Time SorceressFF9: Evil SorcererFF10: ReligionFF11: MMO, nobody cares, but the overarching villain is a godlike elementalFF12: Evil PrinceFF14: MMO, nobody cares, but the overarching villain is a godlike elementalFF15: Evil PrinceFF16: Godlike elementalIf we're being highly charitable here, there are only four villains. And don't go selection bias with the non main-line. The villains I left out are all Evil Sorcerers, Godlike Elementals, or Religion.
>>97864068Demon and God-like Elemental are just Great BeastsReligion is just one or a series of Cult LeadersAlien is just an aesthetic modifier for any of the other four types. Great Beast if simply an uncaring cosmic mechanism or rogue technology, Dark King if conquerors, cult Leaders if all of society has been restructured around their worship or they rule in secret, and Evil Sorcerers if they simply wield great technology indistinguishable from magic for their own esoteric fulfillment
>>97837876The kind that started out with a superficially good idea, but only knows how to double down.
These all have theming and potentially other powers, but can they still be broken down further into what the greatest strength of each is?Physical might, charisma/manipulation, military/political strength, magic power?A great beast may have magic powers and a cult following but it's greatest strength is still likely to be their physical strength or they aren't much of a beast.
>>97865904It's much simpler than that:Opposition of strength, opposition of ideas, opposition of control, opposition of knowledgeEach is defined by what they have that the protagonists do not and are ultimately defeated by the protagonist either supplanting or subverting them. This creates two major plot arc possibilities for each type of foil adversary that can each be framed with several different aesthetic or moral profiles.
>>97864771You missed the point. >>97842339 said >dark king>yeah just imagine every final fantasy emperor type characterThere are only four dark kings. Most have completely different descriptions and modus opperandi.
>>97840943Based
>>97840943This is the coolest objectively.
>>97837876The charismatic dark lord whose underlings are genuinely loyal unto death and who treats his lieutenants with respect and compassion even as they work towards antagonistic goals for the party. The kind of villain who even after your party cuts off his head and mounts it from the city gates, 40 years down the line there will be nostalgic boomers reminiscing about the "good old days" and radicalized youth insisting he was actually an unsung hero and underdog who did nothing wrong, those wood elves had it coming he HAD to burn down the world tree also I heard it was cursed anywhere so he was doing them a favor
>>97837876an intergalactic deity who hates you specifically but is worshipped and glorified by literally everyone else
>>97837876Evil sorceress who murders princesses to steal their beauty.
>>97837876Orc warlord!
Damn that looks like shit
>>97837876A savage barbarian lord, leading hordes of Cimmerian-like supermen.
>>97864011> Details please!Basically, a force called Ruin was kept at bay by the Final Emperor, who had stolen the power of Ruin and Preservation to give himself the powers of all. He didn't know what to do with that power, how to use it. Almost destroyed it all, the only way for him to keep it together was Tyranny.> NoxTop 5 of all time. Loved the idea of doing every bad action in the hope of erasing them.> DetailsMade a few threads back in the day to convert Wakfu into 4e. They became softcore porn drops so I stopped posting and kept the results to myself.
>>97876824Here's a taste of what could have been if it weren't for furries out for that one Ecaflip in the show.I got a few ones I was proud of, Enutrof I had 2 players compete to play it. It had another layer of "Number go Up". Savings.> Old PDF cannot be sent through 4chan anymorewut

>>97837904Bbeg. Huh. I'm still straight. Bbeg bbeg bbeg. Nope. Give me a big titty Goth girl that plays RPG games with dice, pencil and paper.
>>97876824If I recall properly, a lot of the terms were refluffing of 4th edition's D&D. Will became Magic Resistance, Fort > Physical Resistant, Ref > Evasion, and stats were Strength / (Con) Vitality / (Dex) Agility / Intelligence / (Wis) Will / (Cha) Courage.I had made minor touches to have 2 roles per class, with one tank and one healer of each element. Like, Iop (Fire) was a Courage primary stat tank.Oh, and full disclosure, no idea who did the visuals on this one. Some anon stepped in. It was before A.I. Simply gorgeous. I just did the wordy part.Enjoy.
>>97876824Might as well finish that class' 1st level.

>>97837876What's that?
>>97840198so boring lol
>>97905795Maybe a lich?
>>97905810Can you think of anything that breaks the pattern? I'm trying to wreck my brain for sci-fi on superhero villain trips, but most of them seem to map on that categorization pretty well too.
>>97905971For starters, stop using super special villains that the whole game revolves around. No one ever told you that you have to design your games that way, so I don't know where you got that idea.
>>97837876Mastermind ultimate villains I enjoy the most, but I find defeating them satisfactorily requires outsmarting them and not just being better at fighting/killing. So the payoff for them tends to be weak in your average game.Overall the villain-type I like the most would be a nemesis-type. So something like Zodd from Berserk or Krauser from Resident Evil 4. Someone with a personal connection/vendetta with the players. They're great recurring characters and have a lot of potential for interaction. And finally defeating them can be really satisfying.
>>97905975NTA, but what else works for superhero villains?
>>97911723Probably street-level stuff with like the mob and crooked cops and serial-killers
>>97864068What happened to ff13?
>>97837876Evil woman who the party will simp for.
>>97837876A very polite, well-mannered, and overall pleasant person who treats their subordinates with respect and care while basically 100% approval rating from subjects including newly conquered ones that agree they are absolutely better off under their new ruler compared to their old ruler. What makes them a BBEG? They are 100% taking over the world and placing it all under their rule. You can join them willing or die fighting them and they will 100% genocide the opposition if they believe it will further their goal in the most effective way. So unquestionably brutal, bloody, and horrifying to anyone outside their rule, but also unquestionably the best ruler and most amiable person in a position of power to those they rule.
