What kind of excuses do you invent for yourself to post threads like this? How are they reflected in your setting?

We literally prep lunch for the group, and any savings vs. restaurant goes into buying more books and props.

Stuff cooked varies wildly. Home-made pizza, Teriyaki chicken thighs, Chow Mein, Fried Chicken... when it's my turn, it depends heavily on what I can find at a discount.

it's common etiquette to feed guests in first world countries, typically you play at a DM's house

We literally do it the other way around. Whoever hosts cleans up and get food for free / significantly less.

I don't host.
I bring soda or agreeable snacks.
Everyone brings snacks or drinks for sharing.

In the past I used to play at family gatherings to pass time for those who weren't into sportsball while we waited for dinner or after dinner.

I don't like people in my house, so I never invite people over to play. As such it isn't a expectation that I am obligated to feed anyone. Bringing snacks is just because they are friends and that is what friends do.

that's weird, you shouldn't leave a host's place a mess

I usually provide snacks and drinks and at the end of the game I serve any sort of meal
Taco bowls, ragu, casseroles, chili, penne alla vodka, pesto
Ragu is the favorite of my players, but it takes 6h to cook

GMs shouldn't provide food when they're providing the game.
