Hey Guys !!
My friends and I want to play D&D but don't know anything about it. Can someone tell us how we can start to learn and play ?
>>
>>97846519
Read the rule books and form your own opinion. If you can't, look for free .pdfs online.
This board will maliciously mislead you, because it's full of shills.
>>
>>97846534
This.
>>
>>97846534
137 Pages ?! I guess i'll have to read everything ._. XD Thanks !
>>
>>97846561
Yes. It takes an afternoon. You are a big boy. You can do it.
>>
>>97846519
Read the PHB and have at least one person read "lost mines of phandelver"
Alternatively, purchase a beginner box, or ask for an introductory game at a local game/hobby store
>>
>>97846519
The good news is that you don't have to learn anything! 90% of the modern D&D fanbase doesn't know the rules just does theater-kid improv with dice rolls thrown in!
>>
>>97846519
You can't. You kind of learn it by playing with already experienced DM since books only give you a bloat of content but not actual example of play, procedures, how-to-s and guidelines.

But you need to understand that all TTRPGs in general are just an adult version of toy soldiers + tea party with dolls where one of the players is like host of a TV-show, judging what happens in the collective imagination. Dice rolls come in when host needs to be semi unbiased on the outcome of the player character action. Thats it. With this knowledge you can arm yourself with a book on some other, better TTRPG and give it a try.

If you can't wrap your head around it yourself, just watch some live streams and try to emulate vidya idk.

Sometimes I think there is really should be a "dragon game" for beginners...

And of course you just can play a table-top game with your friends and try to role-play you action like actors in character with interludes and exposition by the host.

Retard.
>>
I'd recommend a different system ngl. D&D is not a good one to start with; it asks a lot of the GM and is not the best with explaining mechanics.

If you want to get started with TTRPGs, I'd ask what your group did before this. LANCER is an absolutely fantastic way to introduce a 40k group specifically into TTRPGs. Honey Heist would be excellent for an improv group that doesn't know a lot about tabletop games. Swap these around and you get awful starter experiences.

Anyway, my guesses for good starter TTRPGs are comparatively simple ones without too much mechanical clutter to sort through. They would be Trophy Gold (dark fantasy dungeon adventuring), Slugbuster (90s teen movie), Crescent Moon (kids going in a magical adventure) and Masks (Young Justice style teen capeshit).
>>
>>97846519
There's tons of "how to play D&D" videos on the internet, including a bunch on hasbro's official D&D youtube channel.

My personal advice would be "Don't." but since that's probably not what you want to hear, I'll instead say that you shouldn't buy a single fucking book and get all your PDFs for free online. It's a large investment of time and money and it's kinda-okay at best, as far as RPGs go, and if yo don't like it, then you're stuck with 150USD worth of shitty books that you'll force yourself to keep using, instead of cutting your losses and exploring some other systems.

You can also use the System Reference Documents (SRD) that are free online and contain practically every rule, class, spell, and feat that exists for D&D

>>97846636
Oh my god thank you so much ! I'll check everything !
>>
>>97846519
Get D&D 5E 2024 Player's Handbook and play Lost Mine of Phandelver hope that helps!
>>
>>97846652
I'll keep that in mind, thank you ^^

THIS

>90% of the modern D&D fanbase doesn't know the rules just does theater-kid improv with dice rolls thrown in!
what a wierd way to refer to VtM players
>>
>>97846636
>LANCER
High crunch, VTT mandatory because it's practically unplayable without Comp/Con, turbo autistic community. The rules are solid, once you understand them, but a completely fresh player who has never touched any TTRPG will be overwhelmed and likely learn nothing from trying to play.

>Honey Heist
Simple and silly, but at least it would be a quick and easy way to get a new group somewhat more acclimated roleplaying. Still not ideal for truly getting into RPGs. Honey Heist and other one-pagers are like board games you pull out when you've got to entertain your boring relatives who haven't ever played anything more complex than yahtzee.

Not familiar with Trophy Gold or Crescent Moon.

>Slugblaster
Goofy as fuck Blades in the Dark conversion that somehow makes BitD worse. Looks appealing, but it's all style, no substance. Lots of rigid scene structuring, and vague mechanics. Sold almost entirely on premise instead of quality of the actual rules, most of which are just "say you do something cool and then roll a d6. If you get a 6 you do something cool."

>Masks
PbtA games are a little wonky, but I've run them for tables of completely clueless newbies and had minimal problems. Maybe the only good suggestion here for getting people into the hobby and getting them to play more than a single session. Being able to hand a player their playbook and a copy of the basic moves sheet with all the stats and explanations for what stuff does does make it easier to just get into playing the game.

Are you treating "DnD" as a by-word in tune of "Nintendo" for vidya? If so, consider literally any other game.

I hate DnD like everyone else, but neither OP nor first anon did anything wrong or out of line.
>>
>>97847229
There's at least a few good faith replies in the thread, but OP should also know that we've got a few dedicated schizos who will feed him conflicting or malicious information, mostly just to make other people angry and derail the thread into yet another argument about trolls with vendettas against D&D or whatever.

Your "games" consists of writing fanfiction about muppet anuses and doing "off-table play" during your self imposed campaign hiatuses. Laughably bad D&D.

how do I into games if I have no friends

Acquire a copy of Mythic GME and try solo play. Or just into friends first.

See if your local game store has an open table you can participate in.
Maybe do some figuring out of the having no friends thing a bit too.

You can make them sure, but you guys don't. You're games are handled through text chat 99% of them time since all your characters are in time jail. You are literally an entire movement dedicated to playing the worst version of D&D possible.

>>
>>97849347
AD&D really isn't very good. If you want to have an OSR puzzle solving experience it's best to play some of the stuff that's released since then building on the failures of AD&D (which are many). The RAW experience is pretty shit and we just played it because we didn't know any better.
>>
>>97849457
thats your shitty opinion after playing at shitty tables.
>>
Honestly I've always felt like 'OSR' is kind of a reductive and useless label (kind of like 'storygames').

Especially because i think a lot of it isn't even that OS. It could be called something else. like 'OSR' could mean something that comes with tons and tons of DnD baggage or it could just mean 'rules light d20 dungeon crawler'
>>
>>97849490
>i think a lot of it isn't even that OS
yes, OSR got hijacked to include shit like shadowdark. doesnt make it meaningless.
(storygames/storyshitting is also a real thing)

>and haven't even read AD&D
Was the claim. And yet I own many AD&D books, of which I've read. I accept your concession.
Care to show us yours?
>>
>>97850443
Owning books doesn't mean you've read them, let alone that you play them.
>>
>>97850496
And yet you have no books, because oyu dont play.
I have books, because I do.
Sad little nogames doesnt even own a single real D&D book ;(
>>
>>97846519
5etools is a great legally ambigious ressource for rules.
For most people who shoot the shit with beer and pretzels, most rules are made the fuck up on the spot, regardless of wether they have an unambiguous ruling in the phb.
Learn Chadacter creation, how to calculate the total for an ability check, attacks rolls, AC and saving throws. Learn your damn class features and plan your turns while others are doing theirs so you don't fucking take 5 minutes per turn and you're already ahead of the curve.
The more you read the 5e rules in depth the more pissed you get.
>>
>>97846636
Damn, honey heist? Nice mention.
>>
>>97850526
>I OWN BOOKS
I'm really not surprised that you think you're winning an argument that was never made, because you've already made it clear you can't read. Thank you for being a shining example of the brosr's extreme retardation
>>
>>97850656
Yes, I do own books.
>an argument that was never made
your argument was
>and haven't even read AD&D

Yet I own the books in person. What do you think I do with them, bozo?
>>
>>97846519
First you have to chop off your testicles.
Then put on lots of makeup.
>>
>>97850749
Leave them on your shelf, quite obviously. BrOSR fags, like you, love to insist they have some kind of traditional legitimacy granted to them by virtue of citing the old rules, while displaying wildly incorrect ideas about older editions of D&D.
>>
>>97850793
nah, I spent money on them to enjoy reading them when not playing :)
you on the other hand dont read the books, dont own the books, and dont play D&D, period.
>Leave them on your shelf

>>
>>97846519
Of all the D&D rule books, the Red Box set from 1983 has the best tutorial on how to play D&D. It will give you a good foundation to understand the core mechanics of the other editions, apart from 4e which isn't D&D in anything but name. You didn't say what edition but that's the 5e logo you posted, I don't know, maybe don't play 5e is the best advice.
>>
>>97850824
>show where Ive done this, schizo.

>>
>>97846561
... Maybe it'll teach you about punctuation and capitalization. If it takes you longer than two hours to read it, though, maybe find something more suitable for your development stage. Like hopscotch or connect-four. And never come here ever again.
>>
