Thinking of replacing the printer pastebin with a simple blurb. Something like :
>FDM: Creality Ender 3 (Cheap) Bambu Labs A1 (Quality)
>Resin: Elegoo Mars Ultra (Small) Saturn (Large)
Thoughts?
>>
>>97853719
Does it matter which version of mars/saturn shit or just whatever is latest or on best sale?
>>
>>97853788
Go for the latest if you can afford it, ideally during a sale.
If money is tight, you can always look for deals on the previous "ultra" version, as differences in print quality are minimal at this point.
For example, i see the Mars 5 Ultra for 279€ while the 4 Ultra is 199. If i did not have a printer already, i would probably rather get the 4 now.
>>
>>97853719
The industry is definitely shrinking so maybe. I would also consider adding a warning about used printers, but most people are pretty good about warning others about that.
>>
>>97853788
Newer is usually better. The older ones get discontinued so replacing parts and screens becomes more difficult

I am an ender 3 hater. No one should be manually levelling a bed in 2026.
I would say just buy an a1 mini or full size. They go on sale all the time and are one of the few plug and play solutions. If youre spending more than $500 do some actual research.
I dont know about resin so il let someone else critique it.

Basic bitch question, I always see weapon STLs on cults and the like for 40k, but many of them aren't modeled with the hands. How do people usually turn that into a something a model can hold? Is there just a bunch of "empty 28mm space soldier hand" files I overlooked?
>>
>>97870565
You can overlay them onto a hand in the slicer and merge them, it doesn't have to be an open hand. Some people just cut them and glue them
>>
>>97853788
The Mars series have been good since the Mars 2 and the Mars 2 is a perfectly serviceable printer even now.
>>
>>97870565
You can either do traditional kitbashing, or add a pair of hands in 3d modeling software (which is easy to do), or slap the weapon onto a whole model that you're going to print, which is also very easy.
>>
>bought a 2.5kg roll esun PETG
Never going to make that mistake again.
I've never had issues with esun before but the 2.5kg rolls both need separate holders (and I suspect you the ones with ball bearings that cost a bit to make, the ones with just a hanger were utter shit) and they have tons of snags that it'll get stuck on that you have to go fix manually.
I even re-rolled over like a kilo to another 1kg roll which was a pain and even so both in 1kg from a 2.5kg roll wasn't that much better.
I'm only going to buy 1KG ones from now on. Better to just buy them in bulk.

Just printed pic related (minus the base). Custom 3d model partially kitbashed from various extracted Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2 assets, and partially modeled by me. It's intended to reflect a transitional design between the ancient Horus Heresy-era ships that make up most of the Chaos fleet and the later designs of the modern Imperial Navy.

Took a couple of attempts to get the scaling right and thicken up the finer details so they wouldn't just snap off, but I like how it turned out.

just got a couple prints from a friend. worried cause i've heard of resin splosions, I'm pretty sure this one has no pockets it is a solid piece, heavier than you would assume from looking at it. I also trust my friend he's been doing this for a while. I do want to be sure however, any advice?

>>
>>97882683

>>
>>97882697
Just know that if it's resin, it's going to be brittle so be careful with the thinner bits.
>>
>>97882676
I don't use blender, but loading things into ms 3dbuilder and clicking fix is weirdly amazing at fixing hidden problems with files. You could also use some tools in it to cut out most of the sprue.
>>
>>97882642
this only happens if models were printed hollow with no drain holes, or if the model is fucked up in some way that creates internal pockets.

I wish FDM slicers had an easy/painless way to fill in voids intended for hollow resin printing.
>>
>>97882943
Which slicer are you using? Lychee warns you when you do that.
>>
>>97882950
for FDM Orca

I haven't printed resin in a long while, but I used to use Chitubox. In any slicer it takes only a second to look through the sliced layers and make sure there are no islands or gaps
>>
>>97882676
Use edit mode
Cut them of the sprues then merge together the loose vertexes, then "sand it down" using the smooth sculpt tool, works well with mold lines too
Make sure to use the decimate tool after the fact to compress the model size to around 300k faces or so to save a lot of data and they usually look pretty fine still
I've fixed a lot of models like this, hope the advice helps
>>
>>97882981
Unironically run files through ms 3dbuilder, it's better than every slicer I've tried for fixing voids. You will still have shit that can't be fixed but thats on the creator and not you. Honestly most 3d printable file creators, myself included, don't test every file on their printer. Although I have some stuff saved about margins of error and whatnot, but no one cares.
>>
>>97883033
I've never used the sculpting tools in blender before; smoothing make sense, but is there a way to better define the creases and crevices (e.g. where the plates overlap).
>>
I'm left-handed, does blender kind of hurt your brain if you're left handed as well? I paint and sculpt some stuff so blender just always feels wrong even when converting to a left-handed setup because the hotkeys still favor being right handed.
>>
>>97883036
Voids in FDM printing at least don't work the same way. It leads to a weaker part with unnecessarily long print times. People designing miniatures don't do this, but I've read that industrial designers for printing will manually add internal support structures beyond the standard infill, watermarks, and other internal geometry that ends up hidden in the final print but has some effect on the part.

>>97883084
blender hurts everyone. Every professional 3d artist I've ever known had a personalized cheat sheet of blender hotkeys on or near their desk.
>>
>>97883092
Thanks for that. Blender legitimately makes my brain hurt even after spending time shifting everything to "left handed mode" which is terrible. Everything I've tried in it just feels wrong. Whereas CAD software works for me even with a righthand setup.
>>
>>97882734
I've had my share of experience with resin doing warhammer crap. thanks for the warning though
>>
>>97883117
Happy to help. I would link some contacts to help more but I'm not sure if it is allowed any more
>>
>>97883070
Yes the "crease polish" and "crease sharp" on the sculpt menu
I don't recommend using sharp at all unless the model you're working with is like 1 million+ faces or something, crease polish usually works fine if you're just trying to define details a bit or like outline drill holes for gun barrels etc
>>
>>97883036
>most 3d printable file creators, myself included, don't test every file on their printer
Given the number of obviously unprintable (or deeply flawed) stl's I find on the usual sites on a regular basis, I have no doubt that this is true, but why do you guys do this? Honest question. A lot of this shit hasn't even been run through 3D Builder to fix the obvious errors, never mind tested on an actual printer. I can understand a talented 3D modeler not knowing the difference between modeling and printing and going for aesthetically pleasing but geometrically suboptimal designs, but some of these are embarrassingly fucked up...like, parts not actually attached to one another, pieces way too thin to ever print successfully, 10,000 open edges, etc. I'm not complaining about people giving me free shit (even if it's shit that I have to go and fix, if it can be fixed) but I'm confused about the lack of pride in one's work - again, even if it's being given out for free to strangers. (Especially if it's being given out for free to strangers. People that know me personally will still think highly of me if I fuck something up every once in a while, but a stranger will not. Some people may not care about their reputations but I care about mine.)

I'm not mad, but I am curious. Can you explain this for us? Why go through the trouble of making it and then release it into the wild without knowing whether or not it's any good, or even satisfactory for that matter?
>>
>>97884302
Because making it is fun, and the rest is irrelevant. Especially if it gets bought regardless. 95% of all files won't get printed anyways.
>>
>>97884302
Personally I can only be motivated to design stuff that I actually want to play with. So I always print out and paint everything I put up on MMF. The supports may only be auto supports with some tweaks, but I know they work, and I know the sculpt works.
>>
Yeah
>>
>>97885018
That's fair, and there is a small number of others with this approach too. But for the vast majority of STL files, you never see pics of printed stuff, and certainly not from the creators.
>>
>>97884415
Bit of a shit answer, but I appreciate it nonetheless.
>it gets bought regardless
Pressing x to doubt.
>>97885018
That's more how I think. If I can't get it to print, it doesn't get released until I can. I'd be too embarrassed to put my name on something that doesn't work.
>>97885090
Shit, it's not unusual to see a preview on Cults showing a screencap of the STL in 3D Builder, complete with the pretty red square around it showing that it's broken. Then you download it, check it in 3D Build, and find out that it's still broken. Like, what are we doing here? You took the time and effort to make multiple previews and upload them all, but clicking literally two tabs before doing all that was just too much fucking work?

It's like bringing a dish to a potluck and telling everyone, "Yeah, I don't know if this tastes any good or not and it might give you food poisoning, but it's free, so you're welcome." Fuck that. Take a little pride in your work.
>>
>>97889950
Well, I've also run my model through all the repair programs until lychee gave it a clean bill of health, only for one of my customers to complain that they still got the error message. That's why I always upload with a pic of the finished print, both painted and bare resin, so you know that the model works.
>>
>>97882206
That's a wicked-looking cruiser, anon. What would that counted as if i were to stat it in the Rogue Trader rpg? Lunar-class? Dictator-class? Some other obscure variant?
>>
>>97889950
>it gets bought regardless
>Pressing x to doubt.

What exactly makes you doubt it? You can see tribes/patreon members, and afaik both Cults and MMF also show the amount of downloads for the files (which on cults equals purchases).

There are some people spending money on even the worst stuff, and the big creators make thousands each month, regardless of what they release, because people are subscribed anyway.
It's all about pumping out 20+ models a month.
Some creators do less volume, but more quality stuff, but they do not attract the masses. But they also make some money, otherwise they would not bother to upload their stuff I assume.
I mean, sculpting as a hobby is great, and printing your own stuff is cool, but if you upload it on a public platform to actually sell.. and nobody buys it: how long would you continue to upload if there are months without purchases? Maybe that's me, but I would either stick to do it for myself, or just upload it as free downloads if I really wanted to share and spread my work. And this personal mindset makes me believe that things that get offered for money also get purchased in numbers that justify to continue.
>>
Wait, have I just been really fucking retarded and leveled the plate completely wrong for 2 months?
Basically what I do is I put a piece of printer paper folded in half. I place it on the screen and press z=0. Then I hold it down after it beeps twice, tighten the screws diagonally and then try to pull. If I notice once side seems unbalanced, I unscrew it a bit, screw some other, unscrew one here, tighten another a bit more and then a bit more until I feel like the paper pulls out better.
Now that I think about it, if I'm not pushing down on the build plate when I do this, what exactly am I doing?
Usually I only get 2 perfect prints, sometimes zero doing it this way.
>>
>>97891000
What are you doing indeed? You are not supposed to do this every other print.. maybe once a year or so.
Tighten the screws properly, and it will stay level
>>
>>97879978
Highland Miniatures Transylvania line.
If I were to go back I wouldn't even print anything but their stuff aside from certain kitbashed hero units and some alternate huge monster ones like the terrorgheist.
I printed a bunch of shit that were an asspain to deal with and the weapons kept breaking like SaintDecent's Skeleton Warriors, anything by Heroes Infinite and iirc LostKingdoms stuff were all fucking annoying.
After a while you learn to tune out all the models by people that look cool in theory only and you know they haven't printed themselves which is practically a majority of 3d modelers.
If you're going to print anything with anything thin like non-chunky swords or long spear make sure to get a resin that is not just tough but flexible, that shit is going to break otherwise no questions about it.

It would be considered a later production version of the Devastation-class cruiser, the one with the broadside lance batteries and launch bays (the boxy segments along the sides towards the front). For the Rogue Trader RPG, you can find it in the Battlefleet Koronus supplement, among the Chaos ship variants on page 105 or 106 depending on which edition you've got/downloaded.

But it would be fairly easy to change the model to have gun batteries in place of the launch bays to make it into a retro-style Lunar class. I might try that when I've got some free time.

Hey lads

Was printing some Battletech minis when I noticed I had a small puncture in my FEP film on my new Mars 4. It looks like a small amount of resin leaked through the puncture and cured to the screen. I tried lightly rubbing with a paper towel with IPA on it, but I'm hesitant to do anything more. How can this be dealt with short of replacing the screen?

Also, lesson learned, will look into a screen protector before I start printing again.
>>
>>97892965
You may be boned.

But resin is vulnerable to heat. Bring some water to a simmer on the stove, dip a sponge or rage in it, and place it on the cured resin blob. After a few minutes, you may be able to dislodge it with your fingernail or a plastic scraper.
>>
>>97893008
>or rage
I meant rag. But you may be raging.
>>
>>97893008
Worst case scenario is a $110 screen replacement, which sucks but isn't intolerable.
>>
>>97892965
Happened to me once. As dumb as it sounds try dampening it slightly with IPA and scratch it off with your fingernail. Worked for me.
>>
>>97892965
Resin softens after sufficient time in IPA.
When I strip paint off abs-like they start feeling very slightly bend-y after about 30-60 minutes.
I'd also invest in a plastic scraper and use it with extreme care.
>>
>>97892965
Plastic razor blade.
>>
>>97893197
This!
Another part to help is is to soak a paper towel and leave that on the stain, as the liquid by itself evaporates too fast.

that sounds like a real PITA. IDK about the Mars auto level plates, but the spring loaded ones on the 1-5 are braindead easy (2 screws; unscrew both to unlock the plate, auto home, retighten).

That being said I keep it in my bedroom because I don't have space elsewhere for it, but I have it hooked to outside ventilation through my window and keep it enclosed when not using it. I use masks and gloves whenever unloading prints or doing maintenance. When I finish a bottle of resin I clean it out and leave it closed up in my room until I get more or weather improves, whichever comes first. I've heard mixed opinions on the toxicity of resin fumes but I think my practices are safe enough for me. I have severe chronic asthma and haven't noticed any change in my breathing or lung condition since I started printing 4+ years ago. If I get lung cancer in a few years then I'll let you know.

I started the second part of a Mawloc print an hour ago. I busted a new 2kg bottle of elegoo water washable grey 2.0 and it's been working excellently for me since I started using it a few days back. My Mars 2 Pro Mono is probably approaching the end of it's life, but I don't have the money to replace it so I'm going to stretch it as far as I can. Going to try and use up the whole bottle in one marathon of printing and calculate how much I money I saved over going retail for fun. After this it'll be a few genestealers and a broodlord.

No one fucking knows what long-term exposure of related fumes does, anon. It might do nothing, or it might give you a turbocancer of ass. Hence, until we do (thanks to people like you who turn themselves into guinea pigs), I'm wearing a respirator.

Btw afaik, if your place is well-ventilated, then VOCs during printing are pretty fucking marginal and you can do without respirator (it gets worse if you do long prints). The problem begins when opening the printer/cleaning your prints.

I evaporated all of the alcohol from my Mercury’s washing tank to clean it. But there’s this resin goo at the bottom that won’t cure. I wiped it out and threw it away but I can’t get to the resin stuck at the bottom under the rotating plastic. Is this nothing to worry about? Can I add fresh alcohol and use it again or should I find a way to get it out?

And by the way I poured a little bit of the dirty resin alcohol into this bottle hoping it would evaporate faster in two containers, but it has recently become this weird orange thing with visible resin bubbles. It is evaporating at a glacial pace. Can anyone explain what this is or how I can dispose of it? Was my alcohol too dirty or does it just lack surface area?
>>
>>97911305
Why'd you evaporate the alcohol out instead of just dumping down the drain or out in the street? That's why you've got this nasty chemical sludge clinging to the bottom of the tank. If you'd just dumped it, you'd have a clean tank.
>>
>>97911327
I didn’t want to pollute the land around me with nasty resin contaminated alcohol.

I tried to let it sit with the top on and let the resin settle at the bottom so I could pour out the clean alcohol. But when I tried to pour it out after a few weeks there was a very fine power-like resin that also flowed out no matter how careful I was when pouring it. I decided to bite the bullet and just dispose of it all.
>>
>>97911334
>I didn’t want to pollute the land around me with nasty resin contaminated alcohol.
Lol. Lmao.

But seriously, if you really care about this shit, you should have poured the contaminated alcohol out into some worthless container like a bucket to let it evaporate there, then wiped down the wash tank with a cloth dampened with clean alcohol. I really don't know how you'll get that evil ooze out of the tank now. Does it not respond to a cloth dampened with alcohol?
>>
>>97911348
Yeah in hindsight I kind of fucked up. It’s my first time ever replacing the alcohol in my washing bin so next time I think I’ll try out what you suggested.

People like you are the reason GW can be even moderately effective in their purges. Security Through Obscurity is for *suckers*: look at GW PDFs, we used to have multiple open repositories that people mirrored so whenever GW did a takedown they were back up in a few hours, a couple of days at the most. Then some knobjockey decided to troll by constantly reporting GW repositories and rather than just waiting for them to get bored, fuckwitted gomrless morontards like you persuaded people to try the Super Sekrit Klubhouse method and now everyone's reduced to begging for individual uploads in game generals because eventually and inevitably the "private" repos were found and nuked as well, only now there was no ecosystem just one dude's private repo and they decided they couldn't be fucked uploading it again.

Loads of private telegram groups have been penetrated and copystruck, so in the end you have your faggy spyLARP-tier "opsec" and your group stays up with five of your fellow fuckwits in it jerking each other off about how clever you are while completely defeating the object of sharing stuff which is to, you know, *share stuff*. But that would defeat your real objective I suppose: feeling like a smug self-satisfied cunt because you get to do this
>neener neener I've got something you don't have
dance like a fucking toddler.

This is the third big telegram purge GW have done - every time idiots like you have persuaded more groups to go private, and every time more groups have died in each purge because they didn't have the numbers to repopulate the files fully when they got taken out. Meanwhile the groups that don't give a fuck and just share a constant neverending firehose of STUFF have barely noticed GW's "enforcement actions".

If i share stuff with 5 trusted friends, how does it defeat the point of sharing stuff? Doing group buys with trustworthy people worldwide is always worth it.
Your issue is simply: Its not shared with YOU. Because YOU are not part of those groups of trustworthy people.
All you want to do is lurk in those public groups, without interacting or participating, and leech.

I just hate optimising my printer and my supports
It takes a long time and I've realised that I've started spending most of my time supporting stls than actually printing shit
>>
>>97914576
We're currently in the waning phase of things; previously a lot of them were distributed online via the funny program that Russia recently banned but I've been noticing more and more of them are getting nuked as time goes on. Alternatively you can try a printing aggregator like Yeggi and see what you can find there, but those are very prone to also getting nuked if they even look slightly like something else already on the market. Personally because I'm just printing for stuff to use at some distant point in the future for TTRPGs rather than specific wargames I'm not overly hurt by this; the freely available stuff has plenty of interesting things to print. But I can imagine it sucks if you're playing specific games owned by companies known for being litigious motherfuckers.
>>
>>97915146
Yea supports are kinda annoying but autosupports are usually fine you just have to clean up unnecessary extra supports and any spots that look like they need some supports, just add them, you don't even need that many just make sure they're evenly distributed and all extra shit that hangs over the sides of the model is on a support so it doesn't end up fucking up and also doing the supports is just a part of the process you'll usually have at least ten minutes of clicking around on your slicer setting shit up before you even bake or send off the file to start printing, this hobby requires patience
But the payoff is 100% worth it to see a cool ass army of shit you couldn't get in plastic on the table

Bullshit. You would need 4-5 tb for one of the bigger groups content alone, some mega archives are close to 10tb. And it's literally all the same old garbage, some files dating back 5+ years, just wasting disc space.
Are you really want to waste your time sorting (i.e. deleting 90%) of stuff because it's duplicates or outright trash you never print anyways?
>>
>>97915212
>but I've been noticing more and more of them are getting nuked as time goes on

And even more new groups get created as time progresses. It's not like people shrug and leave the hobby when their main sharing group goes away. They just make a new one. If you click on people sharing files you will notice that sometimes you have 50+ groups in common with them.
>>

There's some issues with the layers, especially near the teeth of the right model.

So I got this Harbinger of decay model ripped from Total war warhammer 3 and Mulgoth the cleaver from Warhammer quest darkwater.

I printed Mulgoth but the horns came out really thin and flimsy. Like they're gonna break from any kind of handling. The arm also started leaking resin.

I've since made the model solid but I'm not sure how to fix the horns. I never mess with my setting cause most of the time my print comes out fine or I find another way to fix issues.

I'm using siraya ABS-like resin on a mars 4 ultra with the default settings. Does anyone have tips for getting sturdier or thickening the horns and other skinny spikey parts? The harbinger came presupported but I may also have the unsup file somewhere. It also has a lot of little horns coming out that could be prone to snapping. pic rel is my free chitubox

I could just print a regular plaguebearer and paint him purple or something but I want the real thing dammit!

It's called helping and contributing. Interacting with the community, you know? If someone is asking for a specific file, and I happen to have it, or know who did a scan, I will usually message that guy and send the file, or tell him where or whom to ask. Mars has a higher pixel density, because of the smaller screen. Barely visible with your eyes (depends on your settings and how hard you look ofc) but on a high Res side by side picture you will be able to see it.
If you want vehicles and other big stuff, go for the Saturn.

>legion abs-like 3.0
meant elegoo here but autocorrect fucked me

as for updates, double-checked FEP tension and that was fine. gave the screen a clean because the old girl deserves it, then releveled the bed, raised it 0.1mm and gave it another go.
resulting print is better and didn't fail catastrophically, however there was still a shift of about 1mm (very noticable on the plate of pancakes) and a number of support failures which degraded the quality of the prints.
gonna look at the z-axis screw next to see if there's a bend, maybe regrease while I'm at it

>>97914574
negative, it's close in that example but it's really all over the place. when printing the same plate the failure point is at a similar point across all of them, and in other prints I've had layer shifts quite early on (first 10 layers or so).

Is this a normal print time for an fdm printer? I normally print in resin, but have wanted to grab some buildings for games of mordheim. This is half the ground flour of a building, and at this rate it'd take me a week just to get a single building put together.

Is that normal? I currently have an Ender 3 and an Ender 5 that I got for free from a friend, is it just that much of a hassle for fdm?
>>
Does anyone here actually sculpt? I was wondering if its a pain to transition a stl to a full blown model in blender for animation.
>>
>>97926531
If all you have is the stl then it will be a little bit of a pain because stl's are always in tris and you want the model to be in quads for animation. It's not impossible, but it will take a tiny bit of work on your part to convert it to quads.
>>
What causes resin to delaminate? I have some prints that were perfect and painted up fine, but between 6 months and a year later they started to crack on the layer lines. I understand how to avoid it during the print, but what makes it happen months/years later? Some stuff just as old has no cracks and everything was printed with the same resin on the same settings. Is it a washing thing? Too long in UV light?
>>
>>97926509
Seems long but could be normal for that printer, don't know much about enders. Some of those supports look unnecessary at a glance, maybe you could manually add supports and shave a decent chunk off.
>>
>>97926509
Your 5% infill might still be overkill, unless you want to stand on your buildings, Lightning infill should be sufficient.
If it's your first time printing with FDM, you should probably start with a single model.
And yes, FDM takes its time. On the bright side, you can just take the model of the plate when it's done and start the next one, within a few weeks you can print lots of stuff.
>>
>>97926509
tweak your settings. Infill too low will cause problems, but how low you can go depends on the design. You can adjust speed too. Look at the documentation for your printer and see what speeds it can effectively do, but go too fast and it fucks up. FDM printing takes time but is less hassle later as the other anon says.

Anyone know what board the generic (non-/tg/) /3dpg/ is on? I've just looked through all the board names and none of them stand out. I have a question that is way off-topic for this general about FDM printing functional parts.

My favourite part of the hobby now unironically. Here's a couple chorfs who will serve as war machine crew. The left one had his weapon cut off and a torch bit from another creator added, resized, staff lengthened etc. The right one had his weapon hand taken off, new open hand added from another creator, rocket added, fingers reposed round the rocket.
Safety goggles scratchbuilt (scratch-sculpted?) by yours truly.
Have done loads more but the screenshots are on my STL drive, I might see if I can dig a few more out later.

I'd take your master of executions over the official model any day btw, good shit anon.

The culprit was the axe. I used hitem3d.ai to make a mesh out of the image of a 6th edition bloodthirster axe because I don't know where to find a scan. It worked pretty well and I could use it as a good base, but it was totally fucked and unprintable lol. I used "make solid" in meshmixer and seems to have fixed it, although I lost some details I added to the axe. I'll probably just sculpt them back on with milliput. Pic related.
>>
>>97931739
meshmixer is great, I've used it all the time to fix, mix, kitbash, cut, rejoin, everything in between
>>97932274
there are a few tools in meshmixer that might be able to help

first of all I'd go to Analysis -> Inspector. This will find cracks and open ends of the model

Then I'd go and check if the model has any inside "voids". You'd go to edit -> Separate shells. This will separate all the meshes that aren't connected. If there is a void in your model, the mesh containing the void will now be a separate solid, which you can delete

Third thing to do would be the nuclear option. Edit -> Make solid. This will be a destructive process and will simulate the solid interior of the thing; then it will remesh the exterior. You can set the quality of the output to be mostly acceptable (by my standards). You can reduce the mesh afterwards if the file gets too big of a size.
Other problems and how to fix them:

if there is a part of the surface which seems glitched; you select all around it and go edit -> Erase & Fill (destructive process)

If the model contains two meshes that are not connected to one another: You can just use Make Solid (see above); or you can join them using a boolean union (not too complicated).

Good luck anon

>Frankensteining figures myself, exactly as I need them
Chorf guy here, this is the true fun of digibashing for me.

I started on tinkercad, I made a 20mm square base to the exact dimensions of the GW one because I couldn't find one anywhere. Stayed on tinkercad for a while, making bases and movement trays and little tree trunks for my old school trees.
Then I used meshmixer to try to add magnet holes to some river sections so I could stop it from coming apart with slight table knocks. Moved onto pulling apart mezgike ork shoota arms and bashing the hands on to a modulork burna.
Then wanted to wrap some winged skulls onto some generic not-guard helmets, and went down the blender rabbit hole from there.

It takes time to learn but imo it's so worth it. I must have spent 3 days making that first square base in tinkercad, whereas now I can do the same in 5-10 seconds in blender lol, it's crazy.

These days I use meshmixer and blender only:

meshmixer for:
- hollowing (before importing to blender to add holes)
- cutting out awkward parts of models that aren't cleanly divided (it has a 'generate face groups' tool that I've not found on any other program, makes it super quick to target whole sections of a single mesh)

blender for: (everything else)
- scaling
- posing
- cutting
- joining
- sculpting
- re-posing arms, feet, heads etc
- remeshing models with errors*
- prototyping
- smoothing
- arranging parts of a model to check fit before printing
- joining icons, decorations etc to non-flat surfaces
- cutting magnet holes
- resizing specific parts of a single model (scaling up the head and hands to match the rest of my army's heroic scale, making banners much taller while leaving the bearer alone so I can freehand more etc)
- scratchbuilding

* even just learning to use blender for remeshing models with errors has been a godsend. No more having to rely on lychee autofix, I can find the issues myself, clean them up, make a model that will print perfectly etc.
>>
>>97932274
chorf guy here again, I hit the char limit on my last post lol sorry for the spam.

1/2

I'd use blender. Download the extension '3d Print Toolbox'. Select your mesh, press 'Check All'. It will tell you the exact area of the issue (it's like the difference between knowing your car is broken vs using a scanner to tell you what part is throwing an error code). Could be non-manifold (the mesh isn't a closed mesh - most common), intersecting faces (mesh wraps in on itself, kinda needs more manual fixing) or a few others.

Depending on the issues, drop down the 'Clean Up' section and press Make Manifold or Distorted. It should try to fix the mesh. Then run Check All again and see how you're looking. If it completely fucks up the mesh just undo and try other fixes as below.

More manual fixes 1/3:
- don't even bother trying to find the issue and just see if blender's Remesh tool will solve it for you. It takes your object and just makes a new, uniform mesh out of it. Works for minor issues, not for bigger ones in my experience.
Steps: Remesh, check it's worked, Decimate, re-run 'Check All'...
> Select mesh > click Modifiers (spanner on right hand toolbar) > Add > Generate > Remesh > (Voxel)
> try Voxel Size of 0.07 to 0.03, lower number = more triangles = finer detail. Blender might hang here but it's still calculating. Any lower a number and blender will freeze in my experience
> If the mesh disappears during this step, you have a big topology issue, cancel Remesh and move to next fix
> If the it finishes and the model looks OK to you, it might have fixed it. Apply the Remesh.
> Then Decimate to reduce triangle count: Modifiers > Generate > Decimate > Collapse > Ratio, try 0.2 - 0.05, the smaller the number = harsher triangle reduction (which is good until the mesh starts looking like PS1 graphics - increase number if so). Accept when you're happy with the look of the object
> Run 'Check All' again, hopefully shows 0 non-manifold issues, if so, should be good.
>>
>>97932638
>generate face groups
Can you explain what that does? I've never used it but it sounds useful
>>
>>97932274
2/3 (sorry)

manual fix 2/3:
- use 3d Print Toolbox to find the issues, then go look at them manually and fix one by one...
Sometimes 3d Print Toolbox returns a small handful of issues that it can't fix itself, but there are so few that it's worth your time to just go look at them and sort them
(you can be a bit hacky with it too, bc usually these issues are a fraction of a millimeter and won't show up on your print, it's literally just to get the model to print properly)
Steps: Generate the list of issues, inspect one by one, then do a bit of nudging / joining / deleting
> Run 'Check All' as usual
> Then with your cursor on the main viewing section (e.g. over your model), press Tab to put blender in Edit mode
> Your mesh will change to show all the triangles
> 3d Print Toolbox will change so you can click each issue and it will highlight just the triangles (or their edges, or their points/vertices) with issues. Might take some looking round the model to find as they're usually tiny
>In this mode pressing 3 works with Faces (flat surface of triangle/square), 2 works with Edges (lines of the triangle) 1 works with vertices (points of the triangle)
>From here it's a case of fixing the issues yourself, basically unfucking whatever looks fucked up
> Useful hotkeys: highlighting 2 vertices/edges and pressing J joins them together. Highlighting a loop of edges and pressing F fills them with a face. X deletes whatever you have highlighted (in case you need to cut back an area of fucked up edges/faces before joining it together neatly again)
> When you're done, run check all again and see if you're all good
> If you can fix most issues but have trouble with one or two, you can try the Remesh fix again as it might have a better chance of working if you've narrowed the issues down a bit
>>
>>97932274
3/3 (promise)

Manual fix 3/3:
>>97932361 Looks like the only details you've lost are the icons on the axe?
This is a prime opportunity to try making something simple-ish... Might take some time on the first try but you gotta start somewhere, and the satisfaction and opportunities it opens up are huge :)
For your axe-without-icons this would honestly be my go-to fix, as once you can put some shapes together it's way quicker and more surefire than persevering with trying to fix the original mesh.

Steps: arrange individual shapes to look like the icons, join the shapes together into icons, join the icons onto the axe...
> The arrows are 1 rectanglular cuboid and 1 triangular prism, repeated 3 times
> Cuboid: in Object mode (regular view), Add > Mesh > Cube
> Prism: Add > Mesh > Cylinder > Vertices: 3 (makes a prism)
> To flatten a bit: press S (scale) > Z (z-axis only) > 0.2 (or whatever decimal. Can also move your mouse to scale) > left click or enter when done.
> To lengthen the cube: S > X or Y > drag out > click/enter.
> To arrange:
> R (rotate), Z, move mouse around. Or type 90, 180, 270 etc. Left click/enter.
> G (move, idk why) > use mouse to move > click or enter
> Movement is weird in blender so I prefer to align 1 axis at a time...
> G > X (lock to x axis) > align on that axis. Repeat for Y axis.
> When you have a prism on the end of a cuboid, Boolean Union them (lots of tuts around, I'm at the char limit again lmao)
> You now have a 3D arrow
> Shift + D & click/enter to duplicate. Do this twice
> You now have 3 separate arrows
> Move (G) and rotate (R) them to be side by side & fanned out a bit
> Shift+click all 3, Ctrl + J for join into 1 piece
> Move & Rotate the piece to its position on the axe
> Scale (S) the piece so that the shape pokes out of either side of the axe, and Boolean Union the piece to the axe

Then you should have three arrows on either side of your axe. Then it's over to you for the Khorne symbol (a bunch of rectangles) ;)
>>
>>97932724
It takes a whole mesh and splits it up into groups, based on what it thinks are the different surfaces of the mesh. It splits these surfaces into face groups which you can then highlight as one big surface. You can tell it to be more or less aggressive with splitting the mesh into face groups, based on the angle between different areas of the mesh.

Really useful if your mesh is one piece and you want to target e.g. the tabard to remove it, or to remove a flag from a banner pole while preserving the majority of the pole so you can add a different flag on after.

A good example I can think of is I found some really cool empire greatsword type heads, but only 4 of them had big floppy hats (which would be awkward to cleanly cut off the heads in blender). So I generated face groups, removed the heads from those hats very cleanly, made the hats a closed mesh, and then joined them onto like 10 different non-hatted heads for variety.

I think a visual demo can prob explain way better. Check what this guy does from 5:15 onwards here. To be fair I'd probably use blender for what he's doing as it's a very clean cut, but it gives you the idea.

>>97933541
yea it was really useful. I use mezgike orks but at the time they didn't have a flamer, so that's when I learned meshmixer. For this flamer the face groups thing helped me cut off the barrel of the mezgike gun and the stock of the modulork flamer, while making the cuts at sharp edges already on the models, so I could just overlay one on top of the other and it looked like the housing of the gun had been welded together kind of.

So in the image it's mezgike arms and stock, modulork flamer, and a couple random cylinders and cuboids in the middle to plug any gaps with plausible looking gubbinz

If anyone is looking for a good way to organize your STL collection: Manyfold
I've set it up on my machine and it's pretty good
It scans the folders you point it towards for any 3d object.
every single model is moveable in the grid view.
Tagging can be automated and you can use the folder logic you used for the initial tags as well
Pretty cool shit

Anons, I desperately need your aid. I have a 5 year old anycubic mono 4k and the last 6 prints I've made have failed. I'm not sure if the printer is cooked or I am.

I am working on a piece of terrain that came with auto supports. Using lychee slicer, not sure if that matters. I have adjusted exposure time, slightly adjusted lift/retract speed, changed FEP vats, changed between 2 resins (ABS-like and some anycubic default), and tried a few different models.

What i'm getting is an effect where the print bed has gunk on it and the print plate (most recently layer splitting).
My printer is in a grow tent, but I print in a usually colder & wetter climate, so I have a heater in the tent keeping the interior between 24-28C (72-85F). I do NOT know if humidity is affecting the print though.

This was the latest fail, does this look like anything easily troubleshoot-able?

>>
>>97944407
Depends on what you can personally tolerate , with all that stuff you describe you won't notice any fumes. I've printed in my bedroom with a cracked window and there was a mild smell, no smell with respirator. Just depends on how health conscious you are. Personally isopropyl alcohol fumes are worse on the lungs and nose.

What's the cheapest FDM printer you can get these days, if you just want it for pumping out terrain?

Currently printing the ULTIMO case and I'm too stubborn to pay out for acrylic panes (I have translucent PLA so why not).

As my print bed is relatively small I'd need to configure them like so:
[][]
[][]

Any way to tweak the interface between these so they won't break inwards? I was thinking of making a circular piece which would mount a + (see picrel)S

>>97950084
I think this is the kinda thing you would be better to ask in >>>/diy/3dpg as its more wheelhouse

Bambu A1 or the mini

Seconding Bambulab if you can wait until Oct-Dec for their black friday deal.
>>
>>97946739
I've had good experiences with bambu and poor experiences with anycubic for cheap FDM.

>>97950290
aliexpress enders are like 20 dollars cheaper than a bambu. I suppose anon did ask strictly for the *cheapest* printer, but no one in their right mind would choose the ender over the bambu

I read that and watched the videos before I printed, but i meant that they were about sizing and fitting and not about a huge loss of detail all over, but that i assume is an extension of exposure time settings. But at 6 seconds it still had loss of details and some of the cones failing to connect

Are there any good functional 3d prints (FDM) for mini painting? I've already printed a rack for my paints, a miniature holder (picrel), and a wet palette.
>>

with a .2 nozzle and the right settings you can print some miniatures. Look for designs that don't require supports at all, or that have resin styled supports that are really chunky with no super thin parts. Those tend to give the best results.

Bases, terrain, game aids, and some tools too can be FDM printed.

The cones on the 'failure' side are expected to fail; if they didn't it would mean your overexposing (you're not). I wonder if you just have a loose FEP? You said you switched vats between prints. I see delamination towards the bottom layers. Also, make sure it's dried off next time you take a photo; I can't tell what's clogged detail and what's water in the top of >>97944853.

I stopped printing for like half a year because I got burnout and now that I'm back I don't know what to print.

Just for fun I tried printing a Tallarn scan in Resione F39 (tinted with some alcohol ink) to see if I could make a Warhammer flavoured Kinkeshi/M.U.S.C.L.E figure. As it turns out, yes! Won't lie, this is pretty fun. Pardon shitty photo, the resin being pale, glossy and semi-translucent makes it hard to show off, though I can say hand on heart the detail is fine.

With a 0.2mm nozzle I think miniatures can be printed just fine if you're willing to spend a little extra on high quality filament.

My test prints on my first resin printer went great.
Any recommendations on model makers/mmf tribes that have a large selection of TTRPG minis?

I really like Arbiter Miniatures aesthetic, but the selection is pretty slim.

As someone who has little experience with STL software, but wants to cut and paste different parts of minis to combine them, what's the best way to know that you have joined them together without risk of malformation during/after printing?
>>
I've dropped and smashed a huge resin tyrannid like 4 times. If only he was made of bendy plastic.

You can use this tool in blender to make stuff manifold

You know, I kind of want to print an anime figure, but I’m really afraid I won’t be able to paint her properly, especially the skin and the eyes.

I am not the anon you originally replied to and I didn't take it as an attack.
It just seemed like your post is another one of those "hurr FDM can do minis and they all look great". At least yours doesn't have one of those 0.4 printed extreme layer line abomination posted with it.

why do you need perfection? You some kinda nerd or something? If it looks okay that's good enough for me
>>
>>97954048
Most of 3d printing is piracy. So the fucker wants a perfect clone of his waifu. It's part of why 3dpritning has no commercial value
>>
>>97954233
>3D printing has no commercial value
>look over at the mini 3D print sellers making bank on Etsy
Hmmm... something isn't adding up.
>>
>>97954048
nigger you are browsing the 3d printing general on the traditional games board talking about minature plastic men

you are a nerd
>>
What's the trick to getting these support trees off of FDM minis? They're thick and get junked everywhere on the mini.
