I think I finally have an interesting paint idea for the twin lance.I can't tell you in case somebody steals it, but rest assured it's kind of a cool idea. Also, I see GW still doesn't fucking know how to make model kits and that tau jump packs are still impossible to build without terrible gaps.
Just gotta base my Skorpekh Lord now.
This used to be a source of pride, now I look at it with disgust.

Started painting some skeletons. Really happy with the bone color I wound up mixing (ProAcryl White Blue added to a mix of Beige Red and Dark Yellow Green).
Started painting my hobgrotz. Lots of airbrushing today for the whole unit, now I'm onto brushing with 5 at a time.Clothes and leather basecoats are down for these 5, did a little test on one of their feet to see how this new skin basecoat will look, which I think turned out good.

I've found myself really lacking the desire and energy to pick up paints and really work on my projects and I've narrowed it down to the fact that my back absolutely kills and my legs and ass hurt like a mother fucker because my chair is completely dog shit. Any UK lads in here recommend a good office/hobby chair that I can invest in so I'm not in agony painting my projects? Sorry if that's not entirely WIP related

>>97860483Look up refurbished/used Aerons from Herman Miller. The GOAT of the chair world, it will actively fix your back for as long as you sit on it properly. A new one is ridiculously expensive, but you can refurbished ones fairly cheap.
>>97860483>>97860504This from one broken fuck to another, and good bracing techniques so you aren't hunched over.
>>97858682did i gift you nocturna paints once for /ss/?
>>97860483>>97860511oh the rabbit hole of office chairscheck out also the herman miller embody or steelcase please 2 wich is a lot more afordable (secondhand/refurbished too)but never ever buy a chair without trying it out first, or buy one you can return for cheap or free after a couple weeksalso never buy an ergochair
Weird thing but despite planning to get better with airbrush, Im actively afraid of using it. I planned to get on with larger model today but I can feel that I'm honestly scared of starting, each time I pick it up my fingers are shaking and losing grip, I instantly imagine how it will get clogged again or how it will take long time to clean or how I will again do something fundamentally wrong. Had similar problems with painting with brush (like constantly assuming I will ruin the paintjob) but here stakes are higher.
>>97860588>but here stakes are higher.Anon, you are clearly on the spectrum here, but what the fuck are you talking about. The worst that can happen is that you'll have to clean the airbrush, which takes minutes.
>>97860558>>97860511All I've managed so far is to go to the charity shops around me and sit in the chairs they've got. Every single one is better than my shit fold out chair I'm using now, but I feel like it's infinitely better to get a Herman Miller chair even if they'll cost 4-5x more than anything in a a charity shop or on Amazon or some Chinese website. I genuinely thought ergonomic chairs were the way to go but it seems not?
>>97860616The chair doesn't matter when you hunch over, may as well sit on a stool
>>97860616Aerons are imo a fantastic investment. They force you to sit properly, minimizing most of the bad shit happening to your back with long hours of sitting. And with a little bit of care, they are imo a lifelong item. There's a reason why even turborich fags like Zucc use it. There are probably a lot cheaper chairs that will give you like 90% of the performance, you are definitely paying a bit for the brand name with HM. But still, if you spend most of your life sitting, it's imo a good investment. t. my ass sitting on Aeron for nearly eight years now.
>>97860616an aeron or embody is over 2k€, the please is around 1k...you can get an ikea markus for ~160 (wich is the supposed gold standard of cheap chairs)but if you think about it, if you use a chair 10+h a day for 10 years or more is not really a big price to pay to be confortable and keep your health, more so if you already have problems>I genuinely thought ergonomic chairs were the way to go but it seems not?the 'ergochair' is an actual model name (of a chinesium chair), all the above mentioned chairs are 'ergonomic', wich basically means they have some amount of adjustments, height, depth, angle, etc>>97860646the seat also matters, even more when you hunch over actually, a stool will destroy your butt in no time
>>97860689is it confortable to sit crosslegged on those?
>>97860689I've found some for £500, but I will say I work 5 days a week on my feet and normally about 1 day off I'm hobbying, 3D modelling, or painting. I still think the Aeron would be worth it as it looks like they sell parts for it too if yours needs refurbishment which I like
>>97860697Dudes don't need nice butts
>>97860704Not really. It's doable, but it's not that comfy. Aerons are designed specifically for optimal, healthy way of sitting, which means feet on the ground.>>97860709Yeah, you can fix most of the chair yourself, there are even tutorials. >3D modellingBless, I'm also 3Dfag.

>try to get better with airbrush, pick up that Casca 3D print I already primed months ago>time to change color, try what Vince showed since anons on /WIP/ told me to not flush by spraying out content like H&S videos show>cup empty, nothing seems to be still present after using that squeeze bottle>bubble back, large amount of paint is pushed back>okay, flush again the same way, bubble back again>another large amount of paint>repeat 4 times, still the same, it's like endless reservoir of fucking paint out of 5 drops originally>accidentally knock out 3D print, it breaks in half, right at where her legs connect, including those connecting pegsI want to die.

>>97860949that's a clean break, should not be difficult to fixclean the cup so it has no more paint, fill it with water and a bit of ipa and spray it out completely while rocking the trigger, that should be clean enough to change color

>>97860988Stop being a bitch ass nigga that folds from a simplest failure. Also, a lot of bigger hobby and art stores (occasionally scale modeller shops and even Warhammer shops) organize airbrush classes regularly. Warming back up since its been a bit, painting one of my test marines as an imperial fist.
>>97861128Anon, are you using a wet palette with oils?
>>97861166Just the case to help keep the palette steady and my desk somewhat clean. The palette is a piece of corrugated cardboard with a piece of parchment paper tacked down with a few drops of elmers glue.
>>97861199Why not just use plain cardboard like everyone else? It helps to get rid of the linseed oil, too.
>>97860949Pin it, glue it, done.
>>978612101. Cardboard still absorbs the excess oil through the parchment paper.2. Thinned oils won't dry out as quickly so I don't need to constantly thin while working with them. Once I get it the right consistency they stay that way for a while.3. I can reuse the same piece of cardboard two or three times, just peel the parchment paper off and tack a new piece down with some elmers glue.4. Since the paint doesn't dry as quickly I can cover the tray with some foil and pop it into the freezer to save the paints for another day, massively slows the dry time. Take it out about 20 minutes before to warm back up and I'm good to go, good for if I need to take a break I can go back to the still wet mini the following day and finish up while keeping my mixes workable. Little things I've figured out while playing around with them.

>>97861563My wife got me these MDF racks for Christmas one year. They're great for organizing my paints; my only wish is that I had a better way of identifying exactly which colour is which. Because I am seated and as tall as I am, I can only see the tops of the bottles on the lower tiers of the racks.I should try labeling the tops, maybe at first with cheap round "garage sale" stickers, but ideally I'd like to paint something on the top of each one for "at-a-glance" identification.

Sort of one piece since sword handle was not yet glued back, due to how thin it is and impossible to pin. Likewise added some weights to her "base" to prevent future accidents since she is, as you can see, rather unstable. I wonder if people, who prepare models for 3D printing take these problems into consideration at all.I must also say that, despite my problems with cleaning (at least I know it's cleaning since spraying itself work just fine - then again, I thinner it really significantly, easily 3:1 thinner:paint, there were some grainy effects on paper so maybe it does separate at this point, AK acrylics by the way), I'm honestly surprised by how precise airbrush can be. Even with my obvious lack of skills, I could pinpoint lightly colored underclothes with minimal spraying around and avoiding staining red cloak. Granted, my only experience previously was Chinese model that sprayed rather wide but still. Maybe that Evolution was not expensive waste of money after all.

>>97865584>>97865580Before getting serious training, I must figure out that cleaning problem. Since spraying itself works fine and problem arise when I clean for color change, it must be result of leftover paint accumulation between cup and the tip. I located two shops in my city where I can try to seek advice, one apparently ran by some grandpa that also paints on place (likely walking encyclopedia of knowledge) and another mentioning some painting classes on their page (might be outdated info but likely someone from the staff could help).
>>97865538all i see is a model that has nothing to do with the conceptif you tried to say that's okay because whatever, ok i guess
>>97865616>one apparently ran by some grandpa that also paints on placeThose are generally the best kind of people to ask. They are oftentimes just happy to talk about the craft, casually giving you a trove of knowledge that others gatekeep behind patreonwall. Also, if he's doing classic art with the airbrush, he might give you some good advice on art airbrush paints, some brands are supposedly excellent (like Schmincke Aero) and mogg the fuck the hobby ones.>clean for color changeI generally pour out the paint > squirt water inside from a bottle until only mostly clean water comes out (I have a bottle with an applicator, but bottles for ketchup will also do) > pour full cup of the water > backbrap > pour the dirty water out > repeat > another full cup > spray it all out through airbrush > put in new paint.

At one point some guy(s) started to "police" the thread about what can and what cannot be posted, including "plastic girls" kits, even bullied one active and talented poster, all with this whole "we must gatekeep the thread" attitude. At some point people voted for "mecha musume" theme just to shut those fuckers up and as a big middle finger. >>97863814The thing that I am seeing is thatj your camera angle is not quite right. I’m not super on point when it comes to this kinda camera and lens stuff, but you can see in the original art that the camera is lower, and there is some distortion and exaggeration/elongation on the details, like how the top of the head crest looks farther away than it actually is. You know how in movies when they do that zoom effect and anything around the subject kinda starts to warp? Your sculpture to me looks like you are taking the shapes at face value from a more normal head on view which makes them look kinda off.Basically the art is some form of perspective drawing, and you are taking its lines at face value without accounting for the perspective. But keep at it it’s still looking good. Pull the nose out, it doesn’t actually bend back inwards on itself.lower and flatten the eyes so they are less angry, the expression in the art is one of mild contempt and disinterest at best.

Here are some old timey Chaos Warriors I am painting up for Advanced Heroquest. I am going to end up with four Chaos Warriors, each representing one of the Chaos Gods. I had the Khorne one painted up a long time ago since those are the basic colors of the CW from Heroquest. Just painted up the Nurgle one and have the Tzeentch one basecoated and washed ready to paint.Looking at them side by side I am wondering if there is anything I can do to update the Khorne one, maybe paint his gloves black, or does he look fine? And the Tzeentch one, I'm not sure if the black staff fits or not? Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated, or if it looks good as is.

>>97866565>I am wondering if there is anything I can do to update the Khorne one, maybe paint his gloves black, or does he look fine?Nothing really wrong with him as is, but a bit more contrast between the armour and the boots/gloves wouldn't hurt. Black's a good call, with some cooler highlights to pair against the warm red, or maybe a dark green if you're into that oldschool vibrancy
>>97866719Yes. They are a lot sturdier and harder to damage than you assume. HOWEVER, having a replacement ready (and that applies to all tools you use frequently, really) is usually also a good idea, because waiting for a new needle or o-rings sucks dick. Whats a matching color to wraithbone? I have a handful of off whites but I struggle to find anything similar to wraithbone. It’s oddly warm and grey but I reallly need to undercoat it well for it to cover smoothly and I always scared it will separate badly in the pot. Learned elders of /WIP/, I've a question about the best way to work on my next modeling project. I want to replace the lower bodies of pic related with tentacles made from green stuff, or milliput. I think the tentacles by themselves are not robust enough, so there are a few options that I've thought of.A: reinforcing the tentacles with wireB: gluing a brass rod to the base of the model and have the weight of the model lean on that. I've rods with 1mm and 3mm thickness, I reckon the latter would be more suitable.C: a combination of A and B. This would be the most robust version, but it would also be the most time-consuming.What do you think?

>>97870016>using gw nunames
>>97870016What else would I call them?
>>97869883My approach would be to use 1 mil fencing tie wire and then use two strands twined together for each tentacle. Six of those should be more than adequate weight bearing for it; you can test this ahead of time by doing up your own armature wire and drilling dryfit holes where the tentacles will go, which will also help you do test posing for the tentacles at the same time. 0.4mm seems quite light for holding that much weight without twining like 10+ strands together; galvanized tie wire from my local hardware shop is cheap as dirt and you're buying meters of it, which beats out the normal hobby tax for armature wire since it's not going to be visible either.

>>97870004NTA but the eyes could do with a bit more work. >>97870166I see. I can check if I've got thicker wire at home. Here is how I did the initial support structure. The torsos haven't been glued to the rods yet, I just drilled holes to them. I've a strong dislike of tactical rocks, but I used the xps plastic to support the rod. I planned on making the tentacles 5 cm long, so that they'll cover the xps as much as possible. I'll start working on the tentacles later in the evening.

>>97870255I'd recommend spending the like $5 at a hardware store to pick up like a 5 meter spool of 1mm tie wire. I would say at that height if you're doing six tentacles each and each one had two 1mm wires twined together it would be more than adequate to hold the weight, you very likely wouldn't need the support rods at all except for helping you position the armature wires and figuring out exactly how you want them to look.>>97870226Truly miserable, abysmal work. It might look BETTER in tailored photos with perfect lighting exposure and contrast but so does everything. It still looks very good in real life. The main issue with it that I see is that there is an in-between period where you aren't doing complicated NMM that really warrants you needing the control it offers. >>97859465Probably the first one he ever bought. Thats the way it is for me with my absurd collection of miniature paints.
Now I think I know what was the source of problem I had with washes made out of oil paints - since areas I painted with brush were totally fine and those airbrushed had areas where I accidentally removed paint with just brush movement, I assume that I simply didn't notice paint removal from brush painted section because it had thicker paint layer and airbrushed one had very thin layer, thus capable of showing primer under it. Makes sense. As usual, nothing I can't fix but I'm honestly tempted to leave the cloak like this. Battle damage and all that.

Ooooh he's a fleshy boyyyy. I'll probably leave him looking normal/alive ish while I paint some of his metal parts then try and have them infecting him along track marks and stuff
>>97871446Yeah you're not going to be able to do the tentacles as only greenstuff and expect it to hold weight and shape properly. That's why you use the armature wire as a core.
>>97871647The torso of the model weighs 7 grams. I must've phrased my earlier post poorly. The problem was that the green stuff kept fraying and falling apart while I was rolling it into tentacles. Didn't even get to the phase of fitting it to the sockets. I think I had a mixture of 60/40 of blue and green. The set i bought was from green stuff world and based on my earlier experience it's extremely soft.
>>97871661How are you rolling it? Are you doing it by hand, using one of those shape roller tools, etc? Greenstuff generally doesn't fray apart in my experience unless you've either not mixed it sufficiently (which would be obvious by it not being a uniform green colour) or if it's expired/half-cured (which often happens with the varieties where the two parts meet in the middle and aren't separated).
>>97871702Tried both with my hands and with a roll maker. The blues and greens were kept separate. However, it is quite possible that the stuff had already expired.

>>97872389yeah, constantly.if im rolling for hits, or for toughness its faster for the opponent to set aside the minis as they fall.i do the same for them.also, what kind of anti-social person brings minis to a game, and DOESN'T want other people to pick them up and appreciate the paint work>>97872431do the drunks playing pool also get mad at the other guy putting the balls back on the table when they falls off? yeah you may rearrange them after, but sometimes it would be bullshit to expect the other player to go to the far side of a table when they can just pick a thing up and hand it to you.>>97872445yeah, if someone picked up my 3rd ed techmarine and heavy weapons squad and starting juggling them i would be mad,But the 10 year old at my FLGS picks up models gently by their base to avoid marking them, while the 40 year old grog will grab a mini by the head with his food stained hands because his guys are all base, silver gun, dip, current meta models, and assumes everyone else cares about their minis the same.its about perspective.
>>97872445If they're going to get greasy or damaged it's better if it's your own fault.
>>97872471>appreciate the paint workLooking is something you do with your eyes, not your hands.Hasn't everyone had this explained in their childhood?
>>97872488trying too hard at this point
>>97872477Ah okay so it is a protectiveness thing, that's fair. I do always ask if I may touch, and so far there haven't been any problems, but I can appreciate that a bad experience would put you off>>97872488Imo as long as people are respectful, I love it when they take an interest and want a closer look
Finally did enough to justify gluing the subassemblies together. Still got a way to go, but I wanted to see what it's like trying to paint it while all put together. I still wonder if subassembly is worth it.
>>97872528Surely anyone who's been at this more than a couple years has been there and dealt with this before.Whitelist/blacklist is too much, blanket policy works.
>>97872705forgot the image
>>97872705>>97872710Sub assembly never seems worth it until something breaks off and you see all the primed parts exposed
>>97872705>I still wonder if subassembly is worth it.IMO it depends on what you're painting for. If you're trying to just paint good models and push yourself as an artist, I find it's worth it. It lets you get easy access to areas you otherwise might not even be able to hit with the primer and at least get your darkest color in there easily. If you're just painting for gaming, who the fuck cares. They're gaming pieces. Get them on the table and play. I think most people in /WIP/ are in the former category though.
>>97872924>They're gaming pieces. Get them on the table and play.As long as you paint them first.
Does this work as a good reference for how light bounces off a sword blade? Obviously it's under studio lights and likely edited, but I've had a real hard time finding a good reference photo for how the light behaves in a fuller. This is at least a photo from a store page so I can be reasonably certain it's at least a real sword.
>>97872944stop doing nmm
>>97873011I'm not doing NMM. I'm just trying to do good TMM. Which involves understanding a bit of NMM and is basically the same thing but with metal paints.
What are people using for display cases? The IKEA one everyone used to use has been gone for years, and all the other ones I see now are above $200. Do I just lowball boomers on facebook?
>>97873054no that's fake tmm. use better metallics that look convincingly like metal without having to paint on reflections.
>>97873060I have some cheap acrylic boxes I got off Amazona couple years ago. Not a full display shelf but big enough to hold maybe an army if it's a low model count one. Not only have I still not cleared a place for it on my shelf 2 years later, but I got 3 of them and have only even put 1 together. It's also doing double duty as a WIP box for stuff too big or delicate to stuff in my recycled candy tins.
>>97873088>use better metallics that look convincingly like metal without having to paint on reflections.Motherfucker what do you think we do with paint? It's all about painting in light values. You paint thing the shadows and highlights. You don't just slap a base coat on and call it a day because "the light makes the highlights for you".
>>97873185you clearly don't understand what I'm talking about. there are metallic paints that you can simply put on and see your reflection in well enough to shave with. trying to "paint in light values" with this kind of paint would look like shit. I'm saying this for your own benefit. use better metallics.
>>97872374according to vicious googling and youtube videos i should use contrast paints and washes over this to not overshadow the ground work, idk i just wanna avoid a slapchop look (i think it looks like shit along with the over-airbrushed look)
I just don't understand this business of painting beyond a flat color. It makes sense to render things in 2d because you are pretending they're 3d, but when you're painting a 3d object why bother doing shading when the physics of light will just do the shading for you?
Nobody fall for the bait please, let's keep this thread on the rails.
>>97872214How did you do the robes?
>>97873422>let's keep this thread on the rails.Or... we could start a new one!>>97873529>>97873529>>97873529
I green stuffed a banner for Cultist-chan. I'm printing off some skulls to adorn it with.
Can anyone recommend good places for STL piracy? I can bet they exist, but I'm totally new to printing.
