>>97859334The heavy handed art direction is in full force with this set (again). Students from the same faction are all nearly copy-paste of each other this time around - extremely prevalent in Witherbloom. A bunch of the spoilers yesterday feature characters that all look exactly the same. EOE was like this too - you couldn't tell members from the same faction apart. Way too much art direction meddling.
>>97859410They probably just don't have a proper idea of what the students of each house even look like. They kind of have a look for the orzhov guys and lorehold, Quantrix and Prismari vary, with the math nerds keeping a somehwat consistent look while the prismari have more variety for being artist/theater kids. Witherbloom is the worst one, they look like nothing, their mechanics are generic as hell and they just have leaf hair as something "unique" to their look.
>>97859551>even 4chan has been infested with kike sycophants who don’t care about the color pie and think blue should have everything including green pump spells and white literal cards like restoration angelDon't forget reanimator. >>97859410Art direction in Magic has been absolute 0/10 shit for more than a decade now. It's tragic, cause originally one of the biggest selling points of Magic was great art in wildly varying styles.
>>97859648The art direction of "let Japanese artists just make the cards" has delivered some boss ass looking cards though.
>>97859702While this is mostly true, a lot of the SOA JP art this time around is pretty average / awful, too. No one escapes the art director for long...
Decent.

I need to organize my currently very messy collection. As part of this process I'd like to get rid of a bunch of bulk. I only play Legacy and Premodern so there's a balancing act between having my cards accessible and thinned to the staples, but not getting rid of some bulk rare that will spike to $50 a copy in a year's time. I intend to have completed decks in boxes in another drawer so I can just grab them and go rather than having to move cards around.

Paradigm is feels like it is worded incorrectly. It sounds like you only get the copy if the spell is exiled, but some WOTC talking head said you get the copy no matter what, so even if the card is somehow pulled from exile or say you copy and opponents paradigm spell, You'd still get the copy every main phase. Why even have the spell exile itself?
>>97863141>Paradigm is feels like it is worded incorrectlyIronic
>>97863141>Why even have the spell exile itself? So you can't easily stack Paradigms together, duh.
>>97863157Son of a bitch, those fuckers
>>97863145Yeah, I need to get in the habit of proof reading, (I won't). Anyway this article says thishttps://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/secrets-of-strixhaven-mechanics>The first time a particular spell with paradigm resolves for you, you exile it.However, The paradigm spells exiles upon resolution no matter what anyway, not only if it is the first time you've casted a spell with that name. It just seems so clunky. The fact that you can still cast the spell even of the original is removed from exile feels like a step backwards.
Are there any remove from exile effects in Standard right now?
>>97863164I mean you can assume the mechanics article isn't the most straightforward and the comp rules will give a more thorough explanation if need be, but as-is it all works. It's mostly exiled to remind you of it being there to keep casting I guess is the main thing.
>>97863167Yes but not for the paradigm spells.
>>97862871Could be tennis without the t
>>97863167You can still cast the paradigm spell even if it is not in exile. This is modern magic and your big flashy mechanic has ZERO drawback.
People still play oathbreaker?
>>97863164The part that bothers me is the 'cast a copy of it from exile'. Up until now I can't think of any cards that create copies (of spells) anywhere other than the stack. I would probably have worded the ability:>After you first resolve a spell with this name,at the beginning of each of your first main phases copy this spell. You may cast the copy without paying its mana costOr something like that.Looking into the comp rules I believe the relevant rule is here:>707.12. An effect that instructs a player to cast a copy of an object (and not just copy a spell) follows the rules for casting spells, except that the copy is created in the same zone the object is in and then cast while another spell or ability is resolving. Casting a copy of an object follows steps 601.2a–h of rule 601, “Casting Spells,” and then the copy becomes cast. Once cast, the copy is a spell on the stack, and just like any other spell it can resolve or be countered.I THINK that, as currently written, Paradigm only works when you copy the card and not the spell. Copies of spells cannot exist anywhere other than the stack.>707.10a If a copy of a spell is in a zone other than the stack, it ceases to exist. If a copy of a card is in any zone other than the stack or the battlefield, it ceases to exist. These are state-based actions. See rule 704.
>>97863201see>>97863189You don't need to exile anything at all, you just need to "resolve" the paradigm spell. So you can in fact, copy an opponents paradigm and now you have it's effect. The wording is "After you first resolve a spell with this name" It doesn't care about the spell being cast or exiled at all. It is retarded and commander bait.
>>97863201I mean, very simply, reminder text is not rules text.
>>97862534We have Specter of the Fent now
>>97863214Yes, but ideally, reminder text should be straight forward and play within the rules and not need a slew of new rules to clarify the reminder text.
>>97863221I don't think it complicates things. It's simply telling you that the copy is cast from exile, which it is, because that's where the copy is created. The copy is in exile, the spell is cast from there. That's relevant to other effects.
>>97863230Why does the cast need to be "from exile" at all? Usually you just copy the spell and cast it. The way it is worded right now, makes you think the card in exile matters, but it doesn't. It may as well be an emblem.
New Reggie just droppedProbably way worse than reggie though
>>97863242It's exiled to remind you, then the mechanic creates the copy in exile to cast. And some effects do care about things cast from exile. It matters. It probably could be more elegant but I get why it's a thing.

>>97863365did he predict the Harry Potter set? if he didn't then hes wrong
>>97863230I don't think you can cast copies of spells. Copying a spell places it on the stack immediately without being cast. Copying a card allows you to cast the copy of the card. That was my point from 707.12 and 707.10aCopies of spells can only exist on the stack. You cannot have a copy of a spell in exile therefore you cannot cast a copy of a spell from exile (because the copy could never have been in exile to begin with). You can copy a card from exile and then cast it but that copies the card and not the spell. Basically I am saying spell =/= card and that copy of a spell =/= copy of a card.Obviously they will rewrite the rules for it, but just like Serra Paragon (and to a lesser extent Mutate), the people who designed the card presumably did not know the [comprehensive] rules of the game they are designing.
>>97863425>I don't think you can cast copies of spells.Depends on the wording of the effect that does the copying. Some cast, some don't.
can't believe I drafted the Monke. I was hoping for either Urza's Saga or Ragavan and I got the Monke. how neat is that. now I'm debating whether to put him into my red blue black commander deck or trade it for Urza's saga or trade it for an Underground Sea. WWYD 4chan?I did horribly in the actual games what a garbage set to draft holy shit. and everyone else also drafted red and black with a splash of white (I didnt splash any white). either way my free play points got me $20 of value which is what I wanted but damn MH2 is a garbage draft set

>>97863427I am not confident enough to say that you are definitely wrong but I would appreciate it if you could please find me an example of a SPELL being copied and then cast. I used Scryfall to search for every instance of "Cast the copy" appearing in oracle text and every card I looked at copies the CARD and lets you cast the CARD and not the spell. Copying a spell puts it directly on the stack without being cast but copying a card lets you then cast the card (which creates a copy of a spell). For reference my search was:https://scryfall.com/search?q=o%3A%22Cast+the+copy%22

>>97863443>I used Scryfall to search for every instance of "Cast the copy" appearing in oracle text and every card I looked at copies the CARD and lets you cast the CARD and not the spell.Objects not on the field and stack are Cards. Maybe it's just the split in wording between copying something on the stack or something in another zone. From other zones, you cast copies. From the stack, they just go there.
To the the rules expert if I exile 4 black cards can I cast the 4th card by paying its mana since it was copied? I assumed the last line of text was a bonus the made up to 3 copies free not a restriction that only allowed me to cast 3 copies only.
>>97863365I think he's VERY wrong about the "Bolas-centric set" he proposed, probably wrong about an Alara set (I wouldn't be too surprised but to be honest I don't think WotC cares about Alara anymore), kind of honestly surprised he thought Fantastic Four would be a likelier Marvel set than the fucking X-Men set that is very obviously coming next, Power Rangers might get something but I don't know if it'd ever get a full set. As for the potential new plane... I dunno, Water World's been a thing for a while, or maybe we'll finally get a Vryn set to kick off Jace's redemption arc post-Reality Fracture.
>>97863467There's no permission given to cast any cards beyond the three free ones, so no.
>>97863450I understand that. I am saying that I do not believe there is currently a card that lets you copy a spell and then lets you cast that copy.Isochron Scepter copies a card and casts the copy of the card. This would trigger 'on cast' triggers. Every card that allows you to cast a copy, copies the card. To my knowledge there is no effect that reads:>Copy target instant spell. You may cast the copyWhen a spell is copied it is not cast because the copy begins its existence on the stack (and I don't think you can cast things already on the stack). When a card is copied it begins its existence in a zone and is then cast from that zone.Paradigm only uses the word 'spell' and does not use the word 'card'. Therefore you are copying a spell and not the card. That is why I believe you should not be able to copy it 'from exile' because you are not copying the card (from exile) and then casting a copy, you are copying the spell directly.I think it's clear that they wanted you to cast the copies of the Paradigm cards to synergize with Opus, Repartee, and Increment but doing so instead of just copying the spell like Epic already did introduces rules baggage that does not fit cleanly in the rules as written if they also want to make sure that the card does not need to remain in exile. They also could have done some retarded command zone shit and placed the card in a zone that cannot be interacted with in any way. Or they could have pulled a Garth One Eye and just said "create a copy of a card named ~ and you may cast it" or something.
>>97863474Thanks for the clarification.
>>97863485It's very simple. You're not copying the spell with paradigm. You're copying the card. The reminder text just uses 'copy this spell' for the sake of understanding for those who aren't bogged down with the rules.
>>97863494You can't copy the card if the card 'from exile' if the card no longer exists in exile, which is the original point Anon was making.>707.12. An effect that instructs a player to cast a copy of an object (and not just copy a spell) follows the rules for casting spells, except that the copy is created in the same zone the object is in and then cast while another spell or ability is resolving.>It's very simple. You seem to think so and yet you have failed to make a case that works within the rules.Have you ever watched Columbo? You remind me very much of the culprits who always say "Oh it's very simple detective, you see...." and then fail to adequately explain away a contradiction. I find your tone condescending which is extra annoying given that you are wrong.Yes. I am aware that WotC will just rewrite the rules to make their failure of a design no longer an impossibility within the rules. I am saying that there currently exist ways to write the mechanic such that it does everything WotC wants it to do (actually cast the paradigm spell instead of just copying it AND allowing the copy to happen regardless of whether or not the original card leaves exile) but the current designers, presumably because they do not understand the comprehensive rules of their own game, did not do that and instead created a mechanic that does not work with the rules as they currently exist (just like Serra Paragon).
>>97863266>the cripple fucking sucksjej
>>97863506Well, let's look at how Epic is handled in the comp rules.>702.50a Epic represents two spell abilities, one of which creates a delayed triggered ability. “Epic” means “For the rest of the game, you can’t cast spells,” and “At the beginning of each of your upkeeps for the rest of the game, copy this spell except for its epic ability. If the spell has any targets, you may choose new targets for the copy.”Ergo, Paradigm is doing something similar. It's very likely not actually copying the existing card. It's simply exiling the card as a memory aid, and the reminder text says it's copying it. Why is it copied and cast from exile? Synergies. State-based actions won't stop the copies from existing if they're immediately cast upon creation, SBAs have to wait until a player has priority to take effect.
>>97862834>it's a wheelchair>not something fantastical like the deerchairs from Which Hat Atelier, or the walking chair that Daretti used to have>but it's silver and gold(brass?) with an upholstered seat back and somewhat filigree spokesIt's tolerable. Not great, not terrible
>>97863527More accurately, it is creating and then immediately casting a copy of the spell with the name it has. This is in fact similar to Garth One-Eye and the like, where the existing card is irrelevant to the copy being created, it is simply a part of the mechanic.
>>97860219it's because few japanese understand ypu can't just draw an animu character gazing through the 4th wall. they always do this.
>>97863220>you can activate his ult the turn after he comes down if your opponent can't do something in that one turnThank God his emblem is shit
>>97860219Nah, the whole premise is wrong. Somehow for Mystical Archives, both this time and the first time, most of the EN versions surpass the JP version.
>>97863445thats honestly what I'm leaning towards, but Urza's saga seems awesome. And even Monke himself seems less useful. he sucked in the draft matches but turn 1 or 2 monke in commander would do well. I don't play vintage or modern though so it's pretty much locked to EDH for me.underground sea is timeless and I'd actually have a few extra tix to go towards something else but I have most other cheap staples already. I'm honestly leaning towards Urza's saga though out of pure utility and just because underground sea is so cheap relatively speaking I can pick it up any time. but I think Urza would make a bigger difference (I already run volcanic island and badlands)
>>97863320No one defending this set still identifies as a man, chud.
After 2-0ing the semifinals, I got slaughtered in the finals of the march paper legacy webcam league. Top cut was open decklist which I've never played before, so I had to make some unusual sideboarding decisions. Pic related was my list plus two Disciple of Freyalise not pictured.>Semis vs Yorion Esper Vial. I played this a week ago so some details are blurryG1 - I have higher seed so get the play. Kept a t1 unprotected hand, shoved and opponent didn't have interaction.Sideboarding - Opponent can see that I have a creature sideboard, so I opted to board up to 75 and leave only the swamp out. This way I don't completely fold to removal or to graveyard or combo hate.G2 - I kept a creature hand with multiple MDFCs and some hand disruption. Opponent opened on Deafening Silence. Turns are spent going back and forth developing resources. I end up with a Dauthi Voidwalker in play and Thoughtseize him taking his Balemurk which I then cast using the Voidwalker. Balemurk ends up getting me two or three more creatures and I generally outvalue him, ending with a Cabal Ritual with threshold to cast a Barrowgoyf and a Voidwalker.
>>97862834>magic realm, people can be brought back from the dead>this asshole has to physically push himself around in a wheelchair
>>97863671>Finals vs UW StonebladeG1 - We roll because we have equal seeding, both making top cut with 80% GW% and then 2-0ing in semifinals. Opponent wins roll and keeps 7. I mull to 6 and keep a hand of Balustrade Spy, Fell the Profane, Cabal Ritual, ESG, Cabal Therapy, Pact of Negation, then draw a Dark Ritual for turn. I play my MDFC and cast Dark Ritual which resolves, then I Therapy him. He fetches a basic and casts Spell Pierce. I make a mistake here and instead of paying for it with my floating black mana, I Pact it, then he FoWs my Pact - also misplaying by not FoWing Therapy and missing lethal. I try to cast my Spy anyway using my other two mana sources, again a mistake compounding on the prior one, and he has second FoW. He follows up with a Tamiyo and immediate Brainstorm and I can't draw into a second attempt before Tamiyo ults.Sideboarding - Same strategy as last time.G2 - I keep a hand of MDFC, Petal, Cabal Ritual, Spy, Pact, Minsc & Boo. He keeps 6. I play Petal and pass, he plays Plains Cage. I draw Cabal Therapy and fire it off naming Lavinia which misses, instead seeing FoW, Containment Priest, Wasteland, Ponder and STP. He deploys Containment Priest, then over the next few turns Wastelands me, gets a Tamiyo into play and flips her. I draw second Pact, Memory's Journey then a Barrowgoyf and can't get into the game. After G2, he tells me that he didn't actually check my sideboard and that he probably should have. I think I could have played a much better game if I opted to pay for Spell Pierce, because then he would be forced to FoW the Therapy to protect the other one which I could then fight with Pact. He would be leaning on drawing his second Spell Pierce or FoW 3/4 to survive that. I thought the creature sideboard did pretty well overall, however I don't think it's suitable for an environment in which you can be scouted. Minsc was also a letdown although I'm not really surprised. He's a gimmick and I never once had the right mana for him.
>>97863544Right Garth creates a copy of the card that you can cast from exile which will create a black lotus, or a token copy of shivan dragon, or do the effect of brainstorm, regrowth, disenchant or terror. but it IS creating a token copy of the card first (temporarily)
>>97863677What if it's like the teleporter dilemma where Magic has a demographic of individuals that believe healing magic doesn't restore the soul?Actually never mind that would take 5 seconds of thinking from WotC beyond "me put wheelchair on card."

Is every single aspect of Magic bad now?>Card designNew cards are overpowered, too complex and poorly balanced>Release sheduleThey are pumping out way more sets than anybody wants>PriceBoosters and preconstructed decks get more and more expensive, Secret Lairs get picked off by scalpers>FormatsStandard is an overcrowded mess, other formats are simply dying or split off into community formats>ArtNew artworks are soulless, tacky, and barely distinguishable>FlavorOver half of new sets are Universe Beyond, which many players hate. There is barely a coherent story in the InUniverse sets and they are full of cute animals and goofy characters. Flavor texts display some of the worst writing ever in literature. This isn't even supposed to be a complaint. I genuinely just can't think of anything that is good about Magic right now.
