>thread question:
Do you think the upcoming 40k show (if it is coming at all) should all be 3D animated like the Secret Level Titus animation and the 500 Worlds cinematic?
>>
>TQ
Why shouldn't it be?
Warhammer 40k is so over the top that any "realism" conveyed by live action will most likely not work.
Imagine the size of the renderfarms if those are still used for it all though.

I'll also add that I will happily cite specific sources for any claim I gave in this thread (or I guess now the prior thread) or the threads I linked if you're skeptical, but you need to actually read what I posted instead of just dismissing information that's different from your preconceived notions about the topic

You're not gonna find somebody more willing to be patient and to answer questions on Mesoamerican shit then me, so whatever I have to do to prove to you i'm not talking out my ass and that I know what I'm talking about, tell me and I'll do it.

While it's not offically confirmed, it's most likely that Cavil's show is the previously-announced live-action Eisenhorn show and that's a good place to start for the normalfag audience. And good for the budget. Attempting to do a lot of CGI that would be required of huge battles or a full series in CGI would drain too many resources and leave things looking like that awful old Ultramarines movie.
With Eisenhorn, you have what is essentially a space detective who can go from planet to planet with his small retinue to misfits who would be the our primary cast. With this format you can introduce the lore of the universe at large in small, bite-sized pieces without needing a massive info dump.
And, if it needs to save budget they could to a "bottle episode" or two where there's some mechanical mishap or alien loose on their ship and they never need to leave the soundstage where the ship's interior set is.

It is but he's a worthless apologist who tries to pretend all the skeletons and first hand writings of the aztecs don't count.
>>
>>97863186
I’ll admit, its likely I’ll never get around to it, but while you’re here, what are the best books about aztecs? you cited the book by Ross Hassig, but are there any others? Also, does your fixation lead into indian tribes, and do you have any good books on them?

As I read through the 6-10th edition Imperial Knight codices - Codexes? I think I can safely say that Imperial and Chaos Knights are side by side with Genestealer Cults for being /yourdudes/ armies to the core. Aside from Canis Rex there is no focus on canon and named models, you are given the freedom to paint and customize your miniatures in any and all possible ways and thankfully, there is no expensive, Primarch-style centerpiece that you need to play your army "properly". I forgot how good it feels to not worry about needing a Primarch/Demon Primarch/Calgar/Wolfboss or any other silly and forced character in both fluff and army crafting.

It being animated would be cool, but it would need a hefty budget to sell the setting. I’m still betting that live action is gonna be what they’re going for

My biggest concern with the 40k show is that they’re gonna try to do way too much shit at once. With live action, practical budgetary constraints are gonna push them towards telling a smaller-scale story within the setting, which is what I think the show needs to do

Knights are centerpiece models, but I meant it in you do not need Gorillaman or Lion or Magnus or Morty or the Silent King or any of that shit with the pay to win buffs/rules that GW is trying to force into every army. I can paint each Freeblade to be a unique, OC donut steel who exists in his own fluff bubble if I so want.

Yes it is my army. I have had it for a long time now and have beautiful opals I cut and polished based on it to make it have a warp esque appearance or some shit idk. Lol. I have mixed feelings about 2 different color schemes. The blue is older and the tan is more recent work of mine. Granted the thousand sons are very fractured so it’s not unusual for different color schemes warbands to operate together. The tan was supposed to be cult of time and the blue Ahrimans followed.
>>
>>97863291
I wonder if the gore in the 40k show is going to get obnoxious as it was in some of the other Amazon shows. The Boys banks on it way to hard for shock value, I would hope 40k it could be used in a bit more subdued way, but chances are we're going to see a Psyker's head pop for comedic effect.
>>
>>97863293
the thousands sons being extremely drab contrast so well with the weird technicolor daemon. makes it look really alien and horrific.

>>97863191
Not even the Spanish thought they were savages, see pic. Though I will say in the interest of being particularly intellectual honest that the quotes were specifically selected to stress a point, and you can find other Spanish sources which are less positive

If you want the completely unedited quotes without any cuts or paraphrasing I can post them, in case you're skeptical.

>>97863211
>>97863224
You're probably thinking of the 1487 re-consecration of the Great Temple, depending on the source (and to be clear, both Spanish and Indigenous sources cite these numbers, so it's not just the Spanish exaggerating: The Aztec also exaggerated the numbers, because the scale of sacrifices was a way to show off military power and the consecration was coming after the militarily disastrous reign of Tizoc, so they needed to present a strong image) they say that either ~20,000 or ~80,000 sacrifices happened over a period of 4 days.

There are logistical reasons that's not possible which I can get into if people want, but the actual damning proof that the number of sacrifices for the event weren't that high is the fact that the Huey Tzompantli skull rack built from the event's victims (at least according to Duran) has been excavated, and the rack only holds ~16,000 skulls (plus a few hundred or perhaps thousands more in two adjacent skull towers). There may not have even been 16,000 sacrifices in the re-consecration either, because at least some of the skulls were deposited from earlier or later periods, not just from the consecration

However I freely admit that there's nuances I'm not quite getting into, if you want I can clarify further in a follow up post, but i'm at the character limit

The Boys has way too much gore for the sake of being edgy. The comic was pretty awful to read. It'd just be dimestore slop if not for Butcher's and Homelander's actors turning in great performances.
If anything, 40k will fill the niche of Fallout with a world with tons of lore that's only hinted at but a small but dedicated cast that we see the big wide world through.

They got fallout for their more wacky sci-fi stuff, so I can see them giving the 40k show a bit more of a serious tone to set it apart from the other adult oriented shows on the platform (and any writer who actually knows what they’re doing is gonna realize that 40k’s comedy works best when played completely straight). But we’re definitely gonna be getting some crazy gore given how much that aspect of the boys is loved by audiences. The suits definitely picked up that clips of gory spectacle get shared on social media and are essentially free advertising. I’m fully expecting to see people getting gibbed from bolter fire and everything
>>
>>97863347
I'd be fine with that as long as it's quick and not dwelt upon as you say. For example I'm fully expecting someone at some point to just get eviscerated by a Chainsword in a brutal manner but my preference would be that it serves as the climax of a prolonged fight, as opposed to a bit of theater for when a Space Marine shows up for the first time.

Me and my friends have a WIP bookchart here but it's pretty unfinished. I also admittedly don't read many generalist overview books, rather I tend to get my info from academic papers in journals and conference presentations or specific book chapters I read when following citations in other sources,

If you had to press me for overview sources, then one of the best I've seen is ironically a paper published by someone at a Mormon institute called "The Cultural Tapestry of Mesoamerica" (https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1519&context=jbms), it's around 20 papers and is a great introduction, aside from not touching on West Mexico, especially the Purepecha, as much as I would have liked. I also can't vouch for other publications from the same source, since a lot of stuff on Mesoamerica by Mormons goes into nonsense /x/ territory.

Beyond that for generalist overviews, i'd defer to what /r/askhistorians's booklist has (https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/wiki/books/americas/latinamerica#wiki_general), despite being reddit, the Mesoamerican content there is generally very high quality. Really I'd recommend binging posts on Askhistorians in general, a friend of mine compiled a bunch here: https://pastebin.com/Mc881KkN though this was put together many years ago and there's plenty of additional posts now.

If you specify what kind of subtopics interest you it'll be easier for me to give specific suggestions.

>>97863338
Yes, feather mosaics are a favorite subject of mine. I'm already posting the bookchart this post so I can't attach images of more, but see here: https://desu-usergeneratedcontent.xyz/his/image/1723/18/1723189132251.jpg for some more plus an extended Spanish description of the art form. I have a shit ton of papers and books saved on the topic, so if you want more info let me know, but one of the better places to start is probably "The Art of Featherwork in Mexico".

The scale of 40k is anything from a rogue trader going on adventures to apocalyptic battles that engulf entire systems. The latter would just end up looking like Avenger's End Game-level CGI slop, so they will likely go for a more subdued approach. There is no reason 40k can't be adapted into live action if the story is about an inquisitor or rogue trader. This can be done faithfully with some decent costuming and practical effects.

The closest I'd ever come to rage quitting a match was when a guy, who had waited to see my army to decide whether to bring the Lion or Canis Rex, who complained about me taking two Legends units, brought up plunging fire and said his guns were now AP-2 because he was a couple of inches off the table height and he looked me dead in the eye like he expected me to want to play with such a retarded rule. Glad to see such idiocy is still in full swing like James has to keep being a fucking retard by contract.

Armies by popularity

Space Wolves suck btw
>>
It is remarkable how convoluted the devs are making 40k.
Unit special rule paragraphs, detachment rule paragraphs and stratagems, army rule paragraphs, ridiculous predefined mission and terrain layouts (because they can’t figure out how to actually balance shooting and vehicles so they have to block firing lanes) obnoxious and absolutely soulless secondary mission objectives (score bonus VP for arbitrarily moving a unit to a quadrant of the board?) with a scoring system that requires so much extra bookkeeping to track scores out of 100 and such shit rules for scoring that your entire army can be fucking killed to the last man and you can still win the game with a big lead.
Now 11th wants to double down with even more detachment rules and a convoluted mission structure based on your MTG color archetype matchups that predefined your mission objectives and essentially automate the gameplay.
Is it so hard to just have more open ended missions and terrain so players can just fucking kill each other and score missions? The game is increasingly playing like a combination of a card game and a spreadsheet.

That is part of it. SoB will never rank highly in competitive popularity because.
1) They are expensive and time consuming to paint.
2) Even when they're capable of ranking highly in tournaments, they still require the highest level competitive autist to do so, so most tournament-focused players will pick an easier army to place with.
3) Their rules do not fulfil their "army fantasy" well so they're not really fun for casual players either.
This puts SoB as a just paint and collect army for most people.

https://illuminatorhobby.wordpress.com/2018/03/30/the-knights-resplendent-an-experiment-with-chrome/
>Another very important note: keep your grubby mits off the model! While it’s drying, the finish is incredibly fragile and even after it has dried, it remains easy to damage. Simply touching the model (leaving trace body oils) will result in a dulled shine, closer to Games Workshop’s brightest silvers rather than a true chrome. As such, I don’t think I’ll ever risk gaming with these fellows, or extending the project into a full army (because of cost restrictions as well).

This used to be more permissible when Alpha Legion pretending to be loyalists was more of thing but nowadays with rules being what they are, this is a harder sell when you have ornery shitheels chasing WYSIWYG in pickup games. I like aztec/soth american anon(I know that Aztec is somehow technically incorrect but dont know why entirely).
I think 40k wuld benefit from a south american aesthetic chapter that get as much focus as the Black Templars. Having a foreign relegion inspired chapter (foreign to the british and white western audiance) that are also seen as just as faithful despite their different cultural practices to the catholic black templar would help make 40k feel weird, distant and unrecognisable

>Blue terrain is certainly going to be impassable, but the yellow pieces are probably difficult terrain? Meaning infantry can run over it at a penalty while vehicles can just run over it. I doubt there will be difficult terrain tests but it would be cool.

3rd and 4th edition's area terrain pretty abstract. The new terrain rules don't seem like much of a departure from those older editions.

In 4th edition for example, it didn't actually matter what was in the foot print of the terrain feature. Features like Trees, bushes, wreckage, or ruins were really just there as a physical reminder of the terrain type. You didn't concern yourself with the actual location of the features beyond where your models could physical rest. This meant that you could freely move through the foot print of the terrain piece, you could walk through solid features rather than path around them.

You could shoot into area terrain, out of area terrain, but never through area terrain. Terrain gave a bonus to units occupying it.

Because terrain was abstract, it made things pretty Samey. The difference between a forest and a ruined building wasn't a lot. What was physically present also didn't matter, terrain didn't need to be tall or short. They stopped shooting and provided a defensive bonus against shooting attacks. The benefit of either was very subtle.

Things being kind of the same though allows for a lot of creativity and possibility. The requirements for a good piece of terrain were so much less. Making your own terrain from every day house hold items was the norm back then. You could have jungle terrain, ruined cities, ice planet terrain, and what ever else you can think of and at the end of the day you could play an enjoyable and thematic game on it. You weren't going to get your shit pushed in because you were playing in the swamp themed table rather than the cities of death themed table.

Hopefully this is the way forward. Pic related.
>>
My hope is that standardized terrain means lots of specialized neoprene mats for different factions like we saw last edition.
>>
Couldn't we end the "what type of terrain is this" argument by having colour coded 'bases' for them? I don't mean actually attaching them to bases, but for the sake of rules the terrain could come with the 'platform' to place it on that clearly states what type of terrain it is.
>>
>>97864894
I saw people do that sort of thing for Kill Teams because the terrain system is a little wild there, especially the way more competitive players use it.

Eh, ATVs get taken with a single multi melta. I don't care much as long as they keep the rule that buffed whirlwinds when you took speeders as spotters. Otherwise it's just a fast and cheap platform for a heavy weapon to move around the baord wherever support is needed, as always.

>extra limbs from my store's junk bitz exchange
>skulls/helmets impaled on spikes (I'm getting the big ass skull pack)
