Hey all I wanted to make a thread to share some DM advice to each other, for myself it's mostly focused on making the most out of nothing... what I mean is how to come up with ideas for terrain without spending absurds amount of money on terrain. Share advice, ask questions... I don't think it necessarily matters what system you're using either. Chimp out if you want.

I want to try and create some height difference during combat. For now, I painted old wine works to resemble pillars, but I want to start using height in our games. What do you guys use to simulate height?

I draw it. I suggest looking at Red Alert 1 map maker to see how easy it is to fool the eye into perceiving height.

Ah, this is a question for the terrain builder general.
Well, it depends how much effort you want to put into it.
>The easiest way
If you are running scifi games, it to take interesting-looking styrofoam packaging. Then mod podge dark grey, then paint it a lighter grey and add a bit of weathering until it looks like concrete.
Add bits and details over that if you feel fancy.
See pic related for my build
>Easy way
This one works both for fantasy and scifi, it's the modular rock formation. Here's the first tutorial I found, but there are a bunch of others, some easier than others. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3aAvOBE1vc
It's basically: insulation foam cut in random shapes. Banged up a bit. Then mod podge + dry brushing of whatever colours you want your rocks to be.

Here's another pic of that same build

And pic related is my version of the modular rock formation build.
Still relatively quick and easy and endlessly useable. You could probably get away with using styrofoam instead of insulation foam, for this.
Now, if you want modular *dungeon* bits, I've never done that personally but you could do it by cutting either styrofoam or insulation foam the same way, except in more rectangular shapes and either covering them with small foam bricks, or carving brick shapes into it (respectively).
Then it's the usual mod podge + dry brushing.

Or just cutting styrofoam in rectangular shapes of various sizes and calling it a day, if you are good with using your imagination.

My GM has a white table compatible with dyr eraser markers, so that makes most of our terrain.
We also have simple prints, glued to cardboard like flat tokens, for tables and crates.
I made some papercraft for crates or cover elements, but I rarely use those.
We use actual terrain for skirmish games like Mordheim, where wood, Styrofoam and cardboard can do a lot for cheap.

Noted, but I wanted to make a thread more about DM stuff and not just my one question regarding terrain. But appreciate the respoinse nonetheless.

Wow this stuff looks AWESOME. I have some extra styrofoam laying around as well, will give it a shot.

I'm assuming graphic design is your passion with how you seem to think white space is a crime

I use d6, each d6 is 5'.
The player topples his tower of dice? tough shit, the character loses concentration and falls.

For some reason I want to take a bite out of this.

You can order absurd amounts of cardboard boxes, for free, from the post office. The system is in place because they assume you're using those boxes to move and will be paying s&h on it, but you don't have to.

Generals are cancer never ever suggest that any topic should be on a general.
