Why did GW stop selling this? Their most based product ever released, instead the sell shit cardboard tiles instead
War games really are a rich boy's hobby
I remember when these released and GW forced all their stores to ditch the homemade boards they'd acquired over the years and switch to that plain boring copy/paste rubbish. Literally nobody liked it, my local GW had some gorgeous boards that apparently just sat in the back for years rotting away afterwards.
>>97899874Because they were horribly expensive even when they were selling them. They constantly slipped around on teh table unless you had a mat under them. You had to go outta your way to secutre them in something that had grip otherwise your models would slide down the hill sectionsThey fucking sucked ass to move and store. Also at the time they retailed for like....i think 600+? I got mine in a store "garage sale" when the store manager basically did a bidding war thing on all the inventory that he was going to end up selling back. He basically bought all of it himself with his GW discount which was 50% off, then startted the bidding at 50% value and then you paid that by basically buying gift cards for what ever it eventually auctioned up to niether here nor there. Then when gaming mats came out, these things basically went obsolete.
>>97899874I miss this one.
>>97905526They were like $250 you twat. I've played on these hundreds of times, as my LGS had three of them when I was in my teens and I have never had an issue with models "sliding," you're probably just retarded
>>97905695>They were like $250 you twaSorry they were like 300 USD retail, 600 is the resell price. 300 bucks back in 2000 went a lot further so thats why i forgot. BUT either way they were a bitch to play on. The 40k one fucking was aweful to roll dice on, gutter dice all the time. If you textured the board, it was fine, models did not slide, if you did not texture the board, they fucking slid up and own the board constantly on the hills. The issue there is, most hobbiests were lazy and did not bother texturing it.
>>97905766ALSO ALSOIt was just a LOT of fucking plastic, and again it was a bitch to store. Ontop of that, its a 6x4, which GW decided to move away from.
>>97905773>Ontop of that, its a 6x4, which GW decided to move away from.IIRC they stopped selling the Realm of Battle quite a long time before they decided to shrink the boards (which was 100% a bad idea, the game plays much better when units have room to manoeuvre and only the biggest of guns have the range to threaten the whole board).
>>97905848It was right around the same time, i think they stopped producing them before they switched to what ever the fuck the table size is now, but they still sold them to try and shift the stock. I remember getting mine toward the end of 7th ed when 8th was either out or had a release date.I dont remember which. >Range of weaponsWell thats just becuase the game has vastly outpaced the original board size, remember this was a game where the longest range weapons used to be the las canon, and the most you could get from a non vehicle or dread was 4 in a unit via a dev squad and that was expensive as fuck, and not very survivable. The power creep of the game has gotten outta control.
>>97905898>remember this was a game where the longest range weapons used to be the las canonThat was never really true except in the Rogue Trader days, 40k has consciously included extremely long range weapons for a very, very, long time. The Leman Russ and Whirlwind were both around in 2nd edition, for example. The modern game is a complete clusterfuck but the capability to reach out and touch someone on the complete opposite side of the board has always been part of the game design toolkit for some factions for as long as the game has been around.
>>97906049Fair fair, but we also have seen the size of games get outta scale too.
>>97899874bet if they sold it again they'd charge 150 bucks for each tile.
>>97899874it's physically very large, comparatively few people buy it and they wanted to switch to a smaller board size to benefit event play.
>>97899874oh another major issue is it sucked to travel with. Packing it up sucked becuase it would scratch and chip paint all the timeVs battle mats which just roll out and are easy to store and travel with.
>>97905766>awful to roll dice on Rolling dice directly on the gaming table instead of dice tray or box is genuinely fat slob behavior. No manners >If you didn't texture the board Ah, I have not considered this because I have never seen one that wasn't properly done. I guess I should have known the average lazy dysgenic Warhammer losers would not bother to flock or base it. I suppose I was just lucky to play with decent people that actually put in the minimum effort. Why would you buy $300 of plastic and not bother painting/basing it? It's literally made to be flocked. >>97905773>bitch to stop It came with a convenient storage bag and stored at only 2x2 feet... Easy to stick under your bed or in a closet
>>97906722I don't think I've ever seen a flocked one in person and that includes a couple of actual Games Workshop stores who used it for demo games. Painted sure, but never flocked.
>>97901161>I remember when these released and GW forced all their stores to ditch the homemade boards they'd acquired over the years and switch to that plain boring copy/paste rubbish. Literally nobody liked it, my local GW had some gorgeous boards that apparently just sat in the back for years rotting away afterwards.yeah that fucking sucked
>>97906722>Rolling dice directly on the gaming table instead of dice tray or box is genuinely fat slob behavior. No mannersRoll your dice in the open, cheater
>>97906722Trying Too Hard
>>97906948Nowadays GW got rid of all the Relms of Battle boards and use only have a 1×2ft cardboard battlemat
>>97899874Awful product. Only the most useless of fags would be incapable of making a "this, but better" version themselves.
>>97906929Everyone has different experiences I've seen plenty of those boards painted and flocked. My area the LGSs are either family affairs (husband, wife, and kids) who are modeling/painting wargamers, or ran by a guy who has modeling/painting ocd. The board was a rare interesting project for them.
>>97908108The only thing that was dope about it, was if you had the cash to drop to get the FW compatable tiles for it then it was cool as fuck.
>>97899893If anything it's just a working man's hobby, unless you go full dumb consoomer.Lots of popular hobbies are equally or more expensive than wargaming, especially if they require buying some specialised equipment/parts or traveling a lot. I think that available space is actually a much bigger filter for wargaming than money and one that isn't really talked about. Storing terrain pieces, gaming tables or even large armies can take up lots of space. You need even more of it to make your own terrain, as well as tools and some area reserved for dirty work. Most boomers and older generations lived in large houses with garages, workshops or spare rooms so this wasn't a big issue in hobby's formative decades, but good luck with that in shitty modern microapartments most millenials or zoomers live in
>>97899874paying several hundred squids for plastic tiles was always cuck behaviour when you can just go to a DIY shop and buy XPS foam and MDF
>>97905567>a rectangle of green acrylic feltI can buy this from a craft store.
>>97908108Post your DIY "this, but better" version, anon. You do have one, right?
>>97899893That is probably going to change as 3D printers become more accessible and retard proof. If they aren't at that point yet.
>>97908957They aren't at that point yet.
>>97899893>>97908957>>97908997No war gaming is a rich mans hobby IF you want to put in very little effort. Wargaming can be very cheap in the long run, and in terms of hours of entertainment vs cost its basically the best out there. Making tables can be dirt cheap its just a matter of effort and most people dont wanna do the effort.
>>97899874>>97905526We had one at my LGS and everything you describe about playing with them lines up with my experience. They looked great in photos, but were a total turd to play on. Whats crazy is that it's essentially just a fancy gaming mat. You spend hundreds on the thing and at the end of the day you still cant play a game with it, you have no terrain.
>>97909779>No war gaming is a rich mans hobby IF you want to play GW gamesHistorical and miniature agnostic games are one of the cheapest hobbies.
>>97909956some historicals are yeah.
>>97908636>I think that available space is actually a much bigger filter for wargaming than moneyAmount of available space in your home is a direct function of how much money you have, though.
>>97910117I guess so (although it's also possible to inherit a large living place), but what I mean is that having enough money to buy some more minis/terrain and having enough money to buy a bigger house is like few entire tiers of financial barriers apart Unless you suggest just buying/renting some extra storage space, which is I suppose also an option
>>97910117It's actually not. You can get a McMansion with workshop and detached garage in rural Kentucky for $350k and in San Francisco it costs $1.5million for a 1 bedroom apartment
>>97905567Played across 3 of them yesterday.
>>97910117no, it's also a function of how expensive real estate is in your locality
>>97909956Even GW isn't that expensive in the grand scheme of things, if you start with something like Combat Patrol or a sub-1k army and build up from there (which you should because jumping in at 2k points right away is a recipe for burnout) it's perfectly doable for anyone who isn't financially stretched to the point where they can barely afford any hobbies at all.It does suck for kids that want to get into it though, I will give you that.
