Thread QuestionAll the Innistrad angels.
>>97906027Modern times? You could sort of grab-bag a few. Bolas is a grandiose and well-characterised villain, but I wouldn't necessarily call him INTERESTING for that. Jace is arguably their most complex recurring character, though awkward writing decisions and general inconsistency of tone with him have made it tricky to pin down all but a few core traits (which, I mean, that's not that weird, comics do it all the time, the majority of the X-men have like one core trait and the rest is wildly variable). Liliana I would say is similar, but she's also sort of languishing in basically... Her character development is 'done' and now it feels like she doesn't have much purpose to be in the stories.Urza's not a modern character but I'd say he's up there too, though he suffers in a similar way to Jace where how he's written varies kind of wildly, and people have sort of post-facto figured out his broad characterisation as an asshole that was necessary. He's actually quite kindhearted in a few stories, like generally being good to Xantcha for example, but it's buried under the broader "genius immortal who cares not about the little people and only about the grander threat".There's also 'intriguing' characters where I just wanna know more about them like Ashiok but there's not a whole lot to say on that front.
>>97906027>Who is the most interesting Magic character?/ourgal/ Niko
>>97906027Urza is a great shades-of-grey type of protagonist villain.
If you have not done pre release yet, pick the Prismari box. Do not pick golgari. Trust me on this
>>97906027>Who is the most interesting Magic character?Of all time?Belbe or Kudro.
Loot is the most interesting character.
>>97906408Went 3-0 with Silverquill, the creatures have a ton of synergy and grow very quickly

>>97906618don't worry bro, that was me a decade ago and now I'm probably top 3 in the LGS, skills can be improved
>>97906623I hope I get good one day I really do...
>>97906618Time to play EDH
Piggas, anything i should add?
>>979065343-0 Lorehold. Decent enough creatures and I had literally more removal than I could play.
>>97906534Also 3-0 Lorehold. Picrel and Antiquities on the Loose basically carried me. Also had the carrot Djinn, seemed a bit better than I initially thought. Could've double copied a spell with her plus Pigment Wrangler at one point, but having untapped attackers was better in that spot.
>>97906534I didn't think it'd sell out. The store I like is full all weekend with a page long wait list. Going to try at a different, shittier lgs tomorrow.
>>97906027>>97906047>TQTamiyo RIPHehhttps://cardboard-crack.com/post/813483137045774336/strixhaven-tokens
>>97906806>>97906733Same here! I guess Lorehold happens to be pretty strong in its set.I'm back in at this set after getting out for an extended period because of annoyance with that Universes Beyond bullshit.I want to start doing drafts again at the small local shops that support it and pull up to some of the EDH/Commander nights too. What's fun to play lately? Is Standard any good or would I still just die to Mono-Black Trash? Also, I've been wondering for a while, ia there some way to be able to evaluate card values as I open packs and stuff without having to painstakingly go through and look up every card on TCG Player? Money isn't like a huge concern for me now, but it would be neat if I could kind of make my money back as I play while not hoarding too many piles of cardboard.
>>97906844I like the new mechanics for the most part but fuck wotc for this one.>put lessons in standard>do strixhaven again>no learn (or any new lessons)>rotate students for an uglier and lamer cast (yes even the niggress headlining quandrix was at least cute and funny for being so in-your-face "WE WUZ MATHEMATICIANS AND SHIET">no Lili>minor nerf to every token just to print new ones>locked the cooler art for every mystical archive behind collector boosters and then had the GALL to release the the shittiest among them as a secret lairThey are so scared of making a slam dunk in UW. I will hope no amount of pushing and shilling will make marvel not flop (it won't fucking flop). I will pray that star trek is Atari E.T. tier and I experience it by pulling a case from a dumpster (and the rest of the cases are sold for drinks and snacks for that draft). I think they'll even sabotage reality fracture to not make UB look pointless.
probably a way to get off in standard but I'm not going to look for it.
Doing a pre release tomorrow, can you guys redpill me on what's good, what cards are actual build around, what archetypes are worth forcing, how much removal I should run in this set, etc.? I didn't have time to study this set at all.
>>97906690I played it once. So boring. I’d rather play 4 person cube.
it was fun while it lasted, soon we'll be back to our regularly scheduled tokenslop and equipmentslop for boros.
>>97907108I really feel like RW should be a big red style archetype. Theme it around divine wrath and all that. Big R bombs backed up by W removal and protection. The token shit is shared by too many color pairs. Equipment is fine but you can't do that every time.
>every color>look inside>it's black mechanic
what Magic colors are Vivec?
>>97907189Black/Blue>opportunistic fuck that betrayed his bestie for godlike power>infinite wisdom to the point he knows you can just save/load your way to kill him
>>97907108I'm a relative newfag to MtG and I was confused when I saw that RW was getting the opposite of its core identity in this new set, I get that the schools have nothing to do with the Ravnica guilds but still.Golgari/Izzet/Simic are very very similar to their SoS counterparts while Boros and Orzhov feel like they've switched places altogether; I remember first seeing picrel and genuinely thinking it was a printing mistake because it's one of the least mechanically B creatures I could think ofBut I'm also a newfag so I could be missing a lot

>>97906989Wow 12 mana to do nothing!
>>97907279Blacks always been a bit of a "jack of all trades colour" it gets access to the widest range of tools but usually not quite as strongly as other colours
>>97907052Quandrix seems the best. The removal seems terrible so it seems like a splash black format.
>>97907189Blue/Red
>>97907715Ok, that makes a lot of sense now that I think about itStill, there's 82 B cards that deal with +1/+1 counters and most seem tied cannibalising other creatures/emptying graveyards/paying life (yours or your opponent's); Adventurous Eater still reads extremely W to me, feels right at home in the most basic lifelink deck alongside Ajani's Pridemate and especially Exemplar of LightAlso unrelated but holy fug what a shame that picrel is so awful, the flavour is top notch
>>97907279I looked up monoblack creature cards that give counters to other creatures and their are only about 70 them. Most of them specify that the creature must have a specific quality, such as lifelink or being a dragon, and others require the creature to be attacking or having to deal damage.
>great art wasted on a draft chaff uncommonMany such cases. Too many. They should curate it more.
>>97906989Would it be easier to just make the conductor no longer be a Pilot? He could then flicker himself infinitely.
Are they doing a Pride event this year?
>>97907812every game of this trash is a pride event
>>97907812How could they top Bearscape?
>>97906912>What's fun to play lately? Is Standard any good or would I still just die to Mono-Black Trash?Mono-black hasn't been good for a while now, but Standard kinda sucks for playing on paper right now because the cheapest viable decks start at $300. Some of those decks are fun to play, but I'd only joining paper Standard is only worth it if you're already in the habit of grinding the format on Arena.I recommend trying Pauper, if you have a local scene for it. A top-tier deck costs $30-70, and it has an open meta with many viable archetypes.>Also, I've been wondering for a while, ia there some way to be able to evaluate card values as I open packs and stuff without having to painstakingly go through and look up every card on TCG Player?Moxfield lets you sort all the cards in a set by price in USD, and open them in a spreadsheet-style view so you can view all of them quickly. Also, each set is only gonna have like 10-15 money cards in draft boosters, and (usually) all of those will be rare or mythic rarity, so it's something you can ignore in most of your draft picks (whenever there's only commons and uncommons left in the left in the pack)
>>97907812i hope so!really hyped for what they might cook this year! :3
>>97907832did I actually type moxfield, I meant scryfallmoxfield is the deck builder site, scryfall is the one for exploring the cards in a setboth are useful tools, thoughanyways, is there anywhere I can play drafts online without needing to pay for them? Something like untap or cockatrice, but with a live community for limited formats. I want to git gud at limited, but without becoming a paypig in the process.
Sealed Strixhaven is pretty fun.
>>97907108Once again, the Ravnica two-colour identities have done irreparable damage to card design over the years. W/R absolutely has to be combat oriented! You just can't do anything else with it! Why even try? It hurts their brains too much to even grasp a slightly different concept for it. Note that this goes for all Ravnica pairs, but still.
>>97906989>probably a way to get off in standardyou mean pioneer? storm-kiln artist has been out of standard for almost 4 years, it wasn't reprinted in the second strixhaven set

I finished reading Edge of Eternities. It was good. Is there anything else worth reading?
I got back into Magic with Final Fantasy. Found out kids are now playing a new Commander format and I've ended up mostly playing on Arena. But I made paper deck of my Chocobo landfall deck.Hit up my LGS and some regulars told me a bunch of Standard players were around. I go up and ask but they said they didn't bring their decks maybe next time. Then they asked if I knew about Planar Standard and explained it's a new 60 card format without UB and went on a rant about how they're playing Magic, not Spongebob or Spider-Man.Back to square one, I guess.

Sup bros, need someone to answer me this mechanical question:Lets say i have access to 4 kinds of mana, white, blue, black and green. Can i use green mana as part of 2 grey mana to cast archaic so it could come with 4 counters on field?
dunno if this is the right thread/place for this, but whatever:What's a good/decent condition Gaea's Cradle worth really these days?I've seen some really high prices but I have no idea what value cards really have, why, and how it's projected to develop into the future.I'm not looking for investment advice, I'm just trying to understand what this piece of cardboard is worth and why?Something about a reserved list?

>>97908473If you happened to be gaia cradle owner, congratz.Reasons why GC constantly growth in value are simple:1) it is one of strongest cards in mtg2) in addition to being one of strongest cards in mtg it is also a land which is always great3) every green commander wants it in his deckI personally dont think its price will continue to increase at current pace, so would advise to sell it. >>97907052I went 3-0 with Silverquil. I'm still not sure what the best school is, but the worst is probably Lorehold. There's really not as much removal as a typical set, so a WB aggro deck can easily punish the big greedy decks with a mix of cheap creatures, combat tricks, and ways to tap blockers.

I just realized the mtg cards me and my brother had as kids would be worth tens of thousands nowadays, easilyhe sold them for pennies ~20 years ago to fuel his drug addictionat least he's been clean for a long while now, which is the most important thing obviously, but fuck me man, could've use that windfallhad mox cards, dual lands, time walks, some urza-editions reserved list cards etc.
Was playing kitchen table with my mum this afternoon and had a moment where I played pic related and paid the additional cost, and she flashed in something to give the target hexproof. I wasn't entirely certain, but I ruled that I had already paid the additional cost, so there was no taking that back, but because the first part of the spell no longer had a valid target the whole thing fizzled and I didn't gain 2 life. Was I correct?
Gonna piggyback on the other guys post: should I hold or flip the JP Strixhaven Force of Will? Not silver scroll sadly.
How is SOS compared to UB last sets?
>>97908626Correct ruling
>>97908626You do not get the two life, part resolutions are if they are separate paragraphs. This will feel confusing because there are very similar cards that would resolve because they're worded to have less restrictive target clauses. Like cards that say "destroy target creature if it is white".

>>97908438For the most part they don't. IIRC the discovery of the multiverse is a very recent development in the Edge's scientific community.
What's fucked up about the Edge is that they are aware that their universe is shaped like a torus and they inhabit the annulus between the two Walls, but chose to call their universe the Edge instead of the Annulus.

SoS sealed reminded me a lot of WAR limited. Lots of fun and cool cross-color (in the case of SoS cross faction) synergies that lead to really fun and interesting game states... completely ruined by outrageously strong bombs that just win the game by themselves. The number of bombs does seem lower so there will be more fun back and forth matches than 'I played the I-Win-Card before my opponent did' matches.I would love to see the G/B uncommon legend in a deck with either red or white Lorehold cards that want cards leaving the graveyard. The 3/4 menace that makes a 2/2 for example just seems like it would be so cool.
>>97908179I could have specified "there's probably something in standard to enable this instead of storm-kiln artist">>97907701there's also probably something that can get something out of this (infinite etb+spellcasts) but at that point it's almost certainly a 4 card combo, hence why I'm not bothering to look.>>97907786Maybe. You'd still need 1 blue to be made every time.
>>97908113Maybe making every color pair do something different in every plane IS too much work, you can still throw some shit at the wall man. This >>97907134 could definitely just be thrown in somewhere. It was kind of the giants in lorwyn eclipsed if you squint.

>>97909101The thing is you can still do different things even within broader themes. BR is a good example where they actually do a decent job of mixing it up. While it mostly sticks to "aggro", "sacrifice" or "burn" as the game plans they do a good job of adding different spins within those archetypes so it still feels different enough despite being in the same area. Bloomburrow Lizard aggro plays out different to Avatar Fire bending aggro despite being the same macro archetype, ECL goblins were a pretty unique take on sacrifice being more midrangey and using blight instead of conventional sac costs etc.But then you get stuff like WR as mentioned before or even worse, GW which is almost always +1/+1 counters or go wide with almost no variance whatsoever and they are clearly phoning it in.

I need a single old frame basic forest and basic mountain for my creative technique deck, preferably basic with text. I'm leaning towards this for the mountain but it doesn't pair with anything but the (arena) Mirage forests which are too obvious a choice. Any alternate suggestions?
>>97912407That mountain looks great. Didn't know about the Arena league or whatever it was called. Shame it's so expensive.I'm a big fan of a lot of the Euro lands. The forests from France and Germany both look great. Also the Portal 2nd Age Doorway mountain (162). For ones with text specifically I would suggest:>Mountain-Ice Age (Any but especially 378)-Mirage 343-5th ED 443 and 445 (white border unfortunately)-Urza's Saga (any)>Forest-Ice Age 380 and 381-Mirage 351-Urza's Saga 347There aren't too many good Forest arts with text in my opinion.

>>97913817We'll see if it holds, but lately I've getting into the conversation about UB with people at LGS. My stance has always been "if you allow some of it, you allow all of it" so I as a policy do not buy or play UB cards. Lately people have been more receptive to my stance, particularly when the conversation includes some of the less popular UBs. I expect Hobbit will still do very well this year, but Marvel and Star Trek are in question. Things will probably drift more towards an average between my extreme stance and that of hard line UB enjoyers, that being "traditional fantasy UBs that mesh with Magic are acceptable and others are not." I don't like that outcome, but it's better than the alternative. And my stance will not change.

In all the history of MTG only 13 cards with the Clown creature type have been made. Outside of Unfinity, only 3 Clown cards exist. Outside of Duskmourn: House of Horror, there are no Clowns. It's an unfunny multiverse.

>>97914143At risk of responding to bait, Duskmourn had just enough going on to surpass the worldbuilding catastrophes seen in MKM and OTJ. Yes the returning characters embodied slasher movie archetypes, but it was nothing close to Rakdos in a cowboy hat. The haunted house was a lot more fleshed out than OTJ's no history but with cemeteries and the utter assassination of Ravnica. >>97914369That was several hours ago. I went 1-2 0-2 and then 2-0 against a guy who had no idea what he was doing. There was some nice stuff in the seeded pack but not enough for a proper focused silverquill deck, I'm pretty sure I only had 2 or maybe 3 repartee triggers even after the seeded pack - enough WB stuff to cobble together a WB deck, sure, but not one that benefited from any of the synergies of the archetype. I ended up with a weird WBG mishmash that was largely witherbloom at its core with the best W/WB stuff thrown in almost out of embarrassment. It had no real ways of getting out of control aside from Dellian, just didn't really work out. Think it could have gone better than it did, in fairness, I had some pretty dismal draws, but still don't think the deck was very good.

It was a stage production, there's a tradition going back hundreds of years of not casting actors who physically match the characters they're playing - men playing women, women playing boys, whites playing blacks and vice versa - and she could have just pointed to that and been completely in the clear. Instead she throws her credibility under the bus trying to claim that a character born around 1980 to a pair of dentists in Surrey, with the most stereotypically upper middle class name imaginable, described in various places as pale, was in fact black all along. Utterly pointless. And I'll note I don't even have a problem with gay Dumbledore - I think that checks out perfectly well with what else is known of the character's history, and is actually quite a good example of where it would make sense to conceive a character as gay without it being relevant to the plot or even being mentioned or alluded to at all within the text. But now I'd be reluctant to even bother defending her on that one because of how much she debased herself with the Hermione thing.
