But an immortal human archmage will always have a magical solution to whatever he is facing.

It says under Magic Affinity that an ordinary person will need 10 years before they can do anything useful. In your case as a hedge wizard you will need 135 days of constant practice to reach that point (3650/27). If you start next to some small town a month away from the nearest city that can even teach magic then you need to be able to make yourself useful to the locals and I doubt they would care much for you talking their ears off with cityfolk knowledge. If your setting has good conditions for homeless bums then it might not matter.
