What happened?
A decade ago this was the WW2 game in every LGS. Now it's deader than dead.

I never played it. But from what I have read it was too "W40K" for the average "traditional" war gamer. I guess it was all the fancy rule books while the "traditional" war gamer is used to more of a stapled Office Depot print out rule set. The model kits were too expensive.

> 4ed came out and removed some early war units from the game, causing many to quit
> Battlefront seems to focus more on team Yankee releases, leading remaining players to assume support is being pulled
> there are dozens of other ww2 historical games competing for the same market.

I know Bolt Action achieved popularity, but it's 28mm.
What's popular for 15mm?

Supposedly it's still around but exclusively as a game played by boomers in their garage, at least in the US.
Except for one store in Pensacola Florida where it has a big presence.

THis,
But Boomers in their garage is far more profitable than
you think when Zoomer's aren't making kids. The next
generastion they make won't care about minis, the hobby
will return to a niche.

This smells like astroturf bait.
Flames of War is only dead to redditors and rainbows.

Problem?

>4ed came out
Constant edition spam tends to put off the players of the previous editions with "Why should I pay to play with what I have already bought" and "What, they changed those rules? That's retarded!" attitude. Big companies like GW get away with this as their massive advertising ensures a constant flow of new clueless players to pick up the new (usually dumbed down) version, but small companies who try 'forced obsolesence' as a sales tactic as well don't tend to last long.

Also depends on the term 'dead'. Shills tend to mean 'It isnt being sold', dispite it still being played by it's fans. They are only concerned about sales, not if something is being enjoyed.
>>
The 40k refugee market is a fickle beast, they are far more tolerant of GWs mistakes than others and will run back at to GW at the first major fuckup

4 editions since 2002 is hardly "edition spam", especially when the first two editions focused on rules for early war and mid war respectively, then third acted as more of a unification of all three war periods.

The reason 4ed was not accepted by the playerbase was because it made large changes to how armies were fielded (went from 1000s of points to a less granular 100s of points) and had rules that favored pure armored formations more than anything else.

It also did one of the cardinal sins of historical play, it made the game LESS historically accurate. Specialized formations were removed, and instead of a "Kampfgruppe" or "Ranger" formation, you'd just field a generic "German" or "US" etc formation.

Flames of War is the largest 15mm scale ww2 game, but all historical games, regardless of model size, are basically competing for the same customer base. There are also hundreds of rulesets for historical games focused on ww2 that have been published since the 70s that are models agnostic (or don't use models at all).

It's not a good WWII game. Take this with some salt since I'm admittedly an /hwg/ grog, but if you're playing a WWII (or any historical game for that matter) it needs to at least somewhat simulate the technology and general feel of the era. FoW does a shittastic job at simulating WWII, the historical era is just window dressing. Combine that with the ruleset itself being dogwater and there's no reason to play it over Chain of Command or something for a light WWII game.
