>>97931857Well done, Anon
>>97931828the colors you see in a photo are completely dependent on lighting and even just viewing angle. just look at a corner of your room. you will see 2 different colors where the walls meet even though they were obviously painted the same color.
Got him primed up finally, now I get to find all the mistakes I couldnt see before.
Today and tomorrow will be the day to speedpaint this squad of Wargames Atlantic beastmen.
>>97932097The beastmen are really nice models, look like they'd be fun to paint. Goats with gasmasks, just like in my Impaled Nazarene songs!
Feeling pretty proud of this one.
>>97931857good to hear, i'm thinking of adding cropping now
are there any guides for painting different materials? like what would you do different if you wanted to make a cape look like wool vs leather vs a plastic tarp?
Just the Sarge left now
>>97932287Yes.
>>97932287>how to paint Xwith X being the material you wantplenty of youtube videosalso dont dismiss actual art tutorials (digital/traditional - non mini related)
went through an absolute shitload of varnish on the torso today
>>97932287Pro painters don't want you to know this tip, but you can just mix any material you want into the paint to give it that look. Ask your local Nurgle player about it
Unusual question - let's assume I want to cast, using blue stuff or similar material, element with connection holes, something similar to this one. Normally I was told to plug the holes, especially deep ones but I would later need them and precisely at location they should be. Manually drilling them later often ends with drilling slightly off or at slightly wrong angle or causing copies to break from strain, even when drilling gradually with slowly increased size of the bit.How to deal with that problem? At very least, how to ensure that at least some sort of guidance hole will remain?
>>97932478is it a straigth cylindrical hole? or a ball one?
>>97932478Plug them most of the way, but leave the top part of the hole open, maybe like 1mm, or 1/16" of the hole. That way when you cast it you will at least have some reference or registration, but you're right that you'll never get any kind of deep holes casting that way.
>>97932524Registration for drilling them out*I meant.
>>97932251Good volumes, anon. I think the highlights on the sleeves would be better placed on top instead of at the end.The face is good, but make sure you darken the upper eyelid more than the lower one. Even if you leave the lower out entirely, it'll still look fine.
>>97932524Some sort of clay would be best for such plugging? I have to be able to clear the hole later.>>97932490Straight cylindrical.
>>97932287It's mostly down to how glossy the material is. The stronger and sharper the highlights, the glossier something appears. Leather is usually fairly smooth and reflects light to a degree, while wool has a very diffuse surface that absorbs incoming light. To make these differences extra obvious, it's good to have materials next to each other, to show the contrasting differences.
>>97932530put a tube in there, and another tube inside that one, until you have a hole of a couple milimeters, plug that then with putty and press another couple mm insideyou will have a perfectly centered pilot hole for your drill later
>>97931854>>97908658Done with this guy

>>97932708I should start working on my black templars at some point. Got sidetracked with old world so they have been collecting dust for over a year now
>>97932715Actually not a straightforward answerAt first I used a green grey, ak german field grey+white, because the cloth hue was very greenish due to having used black templar contrast for it.But I didn't like the final colour, so I glazed all the cloth with some purple to balance the green and make it more neutral>>97932749Do it!

>>97932097Nice to see there's some compatability with GWs traitor guard kit
>>97933140the ones with the helmets are kinda cool.
>>97932901Still thinking about how I want to tackle this guy.Would a purple bull with golden wings (not the arms of the wings, the middle parts would be gold) be a good fit? I was thinking if I do this I would have the rune effects glow green instead of the red here.
>>97933145Arms of the GW traitor set (as well as old and new cadians) are compatible with all the WGA Damned sets so far (except the ogres/ogryns ofc), accessories like the backpacks and cloaks with spikes also work. I have not experimented with the heads yet, but the oddly shaped "Blooded" necks need some cutting for sure, but also cadian balljoint necks are too big and chunky sadly. Head-size is similar, so nothing a hobby knife can't fix.
>>97933165Any idea of when they'll hit the stores? I took notice of these guys years ago, I just assumed they were an elaborate scam by now. Good to see the kickstarter went somewhere. Although I'm somewhat sad this probably means WGA and Reptilian Overlords won't do a plastic collaboration of RO's Heretics
>>97932251Pretty good!
My compressor arrived in the mail, looking for some airbrushing advice. Is a cardboard box with some foam/tissue paper to catch overspray good enough or should I get myself a more proper setup with a fan and shit before I start using it? Only planning to use acrylics so no toxic enamel fumes to worry about. Pic related is where I'll be working so I can get fresh air by just opening the door to the balcony.
>>97933330yeah its more than enoughyou dont need one of the fancy ones with exhaust fans as long as youre just spraying acrylics
>>97933330>Is a cardboard box with some foam/tissue paper to catch overspray good enoughFor acrylics, yeah. If you gonna keep that window/balcony open, it'll be enough for the air quality, too. If not (or for winter time), get a respirator. I would also recommend decanting the Citadel paints into dropper bottles, because as if these faggy pots weren't bad enough, they are pure suffering to use with airbrush.
>>97932901They came out decent anon
I have some sort of decision block, maybe you could help. Let's assume that there is some sort of friendly competition, with no prizes, etc. I could enter and do either a) project I always wanted to do but would involve a lot of recasting parts or scratchbuilding, not guaranteeing that I could finish it in time or b) against my own tendencies, make project by kitbashing existing spare parts and instead aiming to use as little scratchbuild elements as possible (because I have a flaw of overthinking every element of my projects, stretching them over months as a result). Which one would you choose?
>>97933211They said they will start to sell an army set and the vehicle indivdually as the first boxes, when everyone who backed the project received their minis. And additionally, they recently posted its down to 100 boxes to ship (mainly canadians, and some guys whose extra sprues were not ready it seems). So at least those two boxes should hit the stores soon-ish. Everything else will get an individual box release one set after another. >Although I'm somewhat sad this probably means WGA and Reptilian Overlords won't do a plastic collaboration of RO's HereticsTrue, but RO has neglected them for quite some years anyway. He never expanded that range properly, which is a shame. But with the Heavy Infantry (some primed ones in this pic), you get some cool demon face facemasks, and somewhat german style helmets too.
>>97933423What is the subject?
>>97933435The prod is a really cool sci-fi weapon. Leaf or pizza slice shaped tassets?
>>97933447Leafs, but mostly because the pizza slices are too big. They might look better if smaller.
>>97933455Don't have a smaller pizza slice punch, but I had this one.
>>97933441Let's say female plastic models.
>>97933423>>97933491I'd say if you know your working time and feel it's unlikely you'd finish, then go with the simpler idea. Mine's going to be a fairly straight build so far but I've yet to start.
>>97933330i used a cardboard box with a hepa filter cut into it. seemed to work well enough. I still used a mask and goggles, but those are cheap enough.
>>97933423Go bIf you try to do your big project, you might either not finish it in time, or try to rush it ruining it in the process (or worse: both)
>>97933599>>97933521Got it. Thank you. In a way, it is also some personal challenge since I absolutely cannot get away from hoarding pieces and avoiding actually using them (or how my mind puts it, "wasting them" on non perfect projects).
>Ideal relative environmental humidity level range for airbrushing is between 40% and 70%>My country humidity is over 70% in all four seasonsWhat should i do? Sometimes it works fine, but other times the paint randomly dry, cracking, super matt whatever, it’s really frustrating
>>97933698It's about humidity in room you work in, you know? According to Wikipedia, my own country have over 70% as well but right in my room meter shows 36%, few days ago it dropped to 25% at some point.
>>97932311These are some of the best looking raven guard Ive ever seen. How did you do that blue tinted black armour? Your specular highlights are excellent.
I'm thinking about getting pingpong balls and airbrushing all my paints on to them to create a sort of chart for how the colors look in real life (and on a sphere for shading might be nice).Am I being autistic or does that sound like it might actually be a useful thing to have on hand?I could make mount them on sticks and slot them all into a grid on the wall or something with labels.
Okay, you guys have convinced me to buy the redgrass palette so I can stop killing myself apparently with the absolutely useless AP one. Which one am I supposed to get? The V2 one? Is the membrane *actually* reusable?
>mom found the painting handle>screamed at me for a full 20 minutes before she finally let me explain what it was
>>97934048Yeah, I've had it for like 2 years and I still have a couple membranes leftover from the box(I paint almost every day). It's pricey but really fucking nice, it doesn't overload your paints with water and keeps the consistency you prepare for a while. If you don't mind the stupid pricetag it's a good buy. I'm not the anon that was shitting on the AP one, btw.
>>97934023Sure it would work, but why not just airbrush the caps of the paint pots? Plastic spoons are also very common for this, and they can be had for a lot cheaper than pingpong balls.>mount them on sticksAs a kid with a pingpong table growing up, piercing the pingpong ball would ruin them. But you could make a nice wrack just but drilling out 1" diamter holes for them to rest in.
>>97934058Butt plug or vape? I cant tell whats going on here.
>>97934058Why are pearl clutchers like this?
>>97934068Yeah, the plan (in theory) would be to mount them on sticks by 3d printing some kind of cone shaped bits, mounting them to the end of sticks (skewers or brass rod), and then just hot glued to the pingpong balls. Then have a board with all the holes drilled at a 45 degree angle with labels to keep them on the wall.I do have spoons though so maybe that would be better and more convenient

>>97934250>>97932813Much appreciated guys
>>97934167If you have a place to keep and use the airbrush then it is absolutely a worthwhile investment, but if you're in a small apartment or you paint in a place that doesn't have good ventilation then stick with rattle cans.
>>97934058This nigga living with he mom
>>97934417Every apartment has a window, anon. Stop being silly. The second advice here >>97934295 is a lot more sensible. You should be getting an airbrush the moment you are certain you will stick with the hobby.

>>97934644Living with your parents is unequal to justifying yourself to them for your hobby tools (or sex toys).
Airbrushing is cheaper than cans in the long run. Not to mention it's a lot faster and easier and unlocks a lot of techniques. I'd paint a handful of minis then just go ahead and get the air brush.
Post SOVL.
>>97934809I don't mind eavy metal but these edge highlights are just stupid
>>97934712Yeah but cans are actual primer unless you want to use lacquer primer, or have a more elaborate+safer airbrush setup.
We are not doing this again.
>>97934809Rather washed out compared to what it's trying to copy.
>buying an air brushIs this a buy once cry once situation, or a buy a piece of shit to learn on before buying a nice one situation? Any recommendations?
>>97934991I always recommend this guy, around $40 and a good work horse. It will go strong if you take care of it but not so expensive that it would break the bank if it breaks. And it takes standard fittings which is a plus.
>>97934809
>>97934991General advice is to buy something middle ground that have lots of cheap spare parts available because, as with normal brushes, starting out people have higher chance at accidentally damaging their tools. If it's a solid model, it could later serve as backup/priming/cleaning (because it's essentially airgun) airbrush, if you decide that you need more precision. Not some extra cheap model that would spend more time turned inside out for cleaning while you ponder why it refuse to work properly but some actually good stuff doing 0.5mm duty while your primary tool is busy with 0.2-0.3mm for details. Similar to how you buy "crop" camera at first (because it's cheaper than full frame and dedicated lenses are also easier to manufacture and thus cheaper as well) and then, after you learn enough and can decide if you really need full frame, can carry that telephoto lens while your FF is on UWA duty.
>>97934991Assuming you don't have serious doubts to whether or not you'll keep using an airbrush I'd say just get something decent straight away. The nozzle on the noname chinesium I started with was so fragile, and the floating nozzle on the H&S Evolution Silverline that then replaced it so much less fragile, that most of the learning happened on the latter anyway.
>>97934991Don't get chinkshit. HS Evolution or Iwata Eclipse are both great, proven airbrushes that won't really break the bank and will serve you for ages.
>>97934809dunno if this counts but week ago i decided to fullfill another of my my long lost dreams and finally try battlefleet gothici printed and binded the rulebook and i have made all the necessary markers and pretty much all the models for me and my friend to finally give it a trygame sounds like fun im and really looking forward to it

>>97935184please don't remind me of that whore
>>97935190I see somebody is still a little upsetti.I've never seen 4chan so collectively agree to pretend somebody never existed. It honestly surprised me.
>>97935142Of all the GW games I've played, Battlefleet Gothic has one of the best rulesets. If you can get your hands on some of the supplemental books and magazines that GW released after the game had been out for a while, the small tweaks make it even better. Right away, I'd recommend limiting the number of fighters/bombers/assault boats in play to the number of launch bays on all ships combined. It takes a while to get the hang of, so you'll likely be running back to the rulebooks a lot during play, but it's pretty satisfying - especially in Imperial vs. Chaos fleet engagements where the fleets' strengths and weaknesses are fairly balanced and there's no weird stuff in play.
how's this look for a first pass on a mane?
>>97934991it never makes sense to buy shit tools unless it's something you will intentionally be destroying when you use it. it makes even less sense with an airbrush where a top of the line one only costs like $250 and you can frequently get a good one for only $100.
>>97935283Seems fine for a somewhat cartoony or stylized horse, if you want it to look realistic the strands ought to be a lot thinner though
>>97935274>Of all the GW games I've played, Battlefleet Gothic has one of the best rulesetsmy heart always goes to mordheim no questions asked but BFG seems like really straightforward simple game with surprising depth and campaign potential to it> I'd recommend limiting the number of fighters/bombers/assault boats in play to the number of launch bays on all ships combinedwill do and thank you for the beginner tips anon and i like your fleetno need for armybuilder on this game is also a big plus

>>97935711Compressor, a spray bottle/squeeze bottle for cleaning, a tupperware or small bucket to dump rinse water in, airbrush thinner, rubbing alcohol for cleaning, synthetic brush for mixing and cleaning (an old big round brush works, like a size 6 or 8), paper towels for cleaning, flow improver if you're in a dry climate, needle juice/light machine oil/sewing machine oil (not a hard requirement but I find it does help keep everything smooth).
y'ever go to reply to people here and then after typing a sentence or 2 you realize you don't have the energy and just delete your response?
finished a few berzerkers
>>97935869I'm not blaming you for this, I know you probably didn't have much choice, but god damn, did GW just forget how to have multiple poses? Not only are they all basically the same, they're the same as virtually every single new individual space marine model as well.
I want to paint something different from the usual GW stuff. Is there a range of models of similar quality? Scale doesn't have to be the same. I want to paint something beautiful instead of grimy. KD miniatures are a bit too coomer for me.
>>97935869They just need a little snow in the recesses of their boots to ground them in the scene.
>>97935924>Is there a range of models of similar qualityMost of the middle range and above scale models are better quality than GW. If you really want to splurge (=pay slightly less or roughly the same as for Citadel stuff) and get a peak model, then pretty much anything modern by Meng or Takom, really.>something beautifulYou could check some top tier 3D sculptors who also sell STLs or finished prints, like Archvillain Games. They have ridiculously large range of scifi/fantasy models, and they are all incredible. And you can get them printed in case you don't have you own printer.

>>97936199The compressor you will buy is exactly the same compressor every body gets, at most with a different label. Every small airbrush compressor (with a tank) is the exact same product. There is literally only a single option.
speaking of compressors I got a timbertech off amazon and for the first time the moisture trap actually has water in it but depressing the valve isn't releasing it is that a problem
>>97936199I use this one. It's meant for tools like nail guns and drills but you can bush it down to 1/8th airbrush fittings and adjust the pressure way down. Only thing it needs is an in-line moisture trap. It gets up to pressure quickly, has a far bigger tank than hobbyist compressors and is fairly quiet.

>>97936694I do not identify as any of those things. Because I'm not gay and can enjoy any number of traditional games. However AoS is and always will be gay.>>97936698You do you, lil bruh.
I sure do love miniature painting and miniature painting works in progress. Finally got what I need to finish my kommandos, so I think I'll start back on that tomorrow if I'm up to it.
>>97936679>I am in fact that autisticdon't worry, we can tell
>>97936655>like assets from a shitty video game like (any year) WoW (which I don't like) or clash of clans or some similarly cartoonish, overly blocky and simple, colourful, childish, style.I 100% agree with this anon and honestly im quite unsure why do you retards pretend hes spouting autistic nonsense.
least obvious samefagbe less desperate for attention
>>97936815lmao now who's schizo? Utterly mindbroken by being called out for liking models that don't look good.
>it's not me I'm just here to instantly deflect and projectNobody called you a schizo btw, that's a self-report
Current working on some guard shock troopers and it's killing me. If I rush them I'm disappointed in my results; if I take my time I'm demoralised by the horde yet to go. Can't wait to pick up some vehicles so I can take my time and still feel that sense of progressAnyone else get similar when dealing with hordes?
>>97936655Based troll poster engaging retarded redditors. For real you’re assessment is quite right
dropping the bradley images doesn't make you any less obvious, feel free to stop samefagging anytime
>>97936910You’ve got a thing about gays man. What happened, did uncle traumatize you?
>>97936910>doesn't even deny itkek, when are you gonna grace us with another slapchopped plague marine?

>>97936311Cool, took me a second to remember who Rinzler was.
>>97936815>nononononono this cant be happening, gwsisters theres people who dont like our beloved company models! get them!!!!!!!!!!!!>in fact, it is so utterly impossible that several people do in fact dislike them, that I'll assume theyre all the same person, yes that must be itunironically, literally, and unequivocally: kys
>he's still trying
>Everyone I dont like its the same person
>>97936847No. Slow but steady is the way. Do 2 dudes at a time and 4 dudes a week
>>97932708Excellent, as always anon.Do you do volumetric highlights or is it just that the black is satin and then the metallic edge highlights?
>>97936847why do you paint?is it to field an amry for a game 'tomorrow'? is it because you like painting? can you go to that game with unpainted models? have you considered you can paint them like shit today, and strip them later in smaller batches to paint them to a better standard?
>>97934809Is that a laser sight power fist?
>>97936847I painted my first Necromunda gang over Easter and felt kinda similar. Either doing 16 guys at a time was a bad idea or I'm too used to doing way less colors.
>>97936210This is a stupid post.
>>97937288but most likely true not that it matters to me personallystuff from same production line gets branded in all sorts of silly expensive and cheap ways
>>97937324No, it is not. Chinks do rebrand fuckload of compressors, yes, but that mostly applies if you are buying the cheapest dogshit available. This is the usual "everything is made by chinese / why my X is not working properly" nonsense pipeline.
Started working on a small addition to my guard army.
>>97932527This is good advice, thanks. I never noticed the sleeve highlights being misplaced while painting, but now I can't unsee it. I should really start planning for stuff like that
Please does anyone have the pic of Pepe huffing glue while building a model they can share with me?
>>97937168Thanks manI actually do volumetrics, but they get lost a bit under the black wash which gives the satin finishThe final highlights are mostly metallic but I mix greys in there too very often
>>97935174Do it. Incorporate it.
>spray painting a bunch of terrain>suddenly having trouble pushing the nozzle>try with other hand>rattle can works>my fucking finger jammedWhat the fuck
Finally almost happy with the venom effect. Probably spending too much time on it for the overall progress but whatever. Now to decide if I keep the mottled look for the body or smooth it out.
>>97935274oh boy i sure do hope this pays out because i went all in on this oneon the other hand it will be pretty cool to have your fleet standing next to your army on a display cabinet even if you dont play the game
Lots of really rough spots on this one, but they should be covered up by the time I'm done
Fairly happy with this one. Couple spots I could fix up. Thinking green monoeye for the cockpit?
>>97938168very chunky, are you thinning your paints?
>>97938176That mini's base coat was really messed up from repeated gluing back together and pinning, I really would strip it but I think it'll still turn out okay? Kinda sucks because I'm planning on spending 80~ hours on itI'm pretty happy with a lot of random tiny spots on this mini. I think it's pretty interesting from a lot of different angles
Still a lot to do. The big one in the middle here is what I'm most concerned about for the cockpit colour, and I'd like the rest to match it. Not sure how I'll do a convincing glowy eyeball in that lil slit. Bleh
>need some space marines to sit>start cutting away and re-sculpting>the entire mini falls apart because the design is just retardedSpace Marines are seemingly only able to stand heroically (with legs wide apart), run threateningly, or shoot (from the hip) to not to look like shit.
