Maybe I am as the kids say "brainrotted" or worse.I enjoy TTRPGs and Wargames but when it comes to actually playing them I can't seem to remember the rules properly and it makes me a burden at the table to be a presence tolerated not enjoyed. So how do you lads teach yourself to remember the rules of TTRPGs/Wargames quickly?
>Maybe I am as the kids say "brainrotted" Or early onset Alzheimer's
I can remember shit pretty well if I put my mind to it, but I also have an uncanny ability to delude myself and I'm so confident in my interpretation of the rules the others start to believe it tooIn short, just force everyone else to play by the wrong rules
>>97932309Bring index cards with your turn's sequence of events and a paperclip or book page marker to move as you go through them.Use flash cards (usually also the index cards) to summarize items and terms you need to know. You don't need an eidactic memory if you keep the relevant info close at hand. Treat it like a test where cheating is encouraged as long as you get the right answer quickly
>>97932309make cheat sheets by handusing pen and paper is preferable but you can also type it up on a PCno using screenshots or copy/pasting thoughno AI obviouslythe final result is not the cheat sheet itself (that's a bonus)it's the work your brain does to process the rules and condense them to a cheatsheet format
>>97932309Last time i had to learn a system (as GM) I wrote out about four pages of notes. Basically>how does a round of combat go>how are characters built>how are checks made>how are basic actions taken>how do enemies behave and what are the important stats for themBy the time i knew it enough to run it i was set
>>97932309Make notes and practise as you read through the book. Same as you'd have done in school if you turned up.
>>97932389>Treat it like a test where cheating is encouraged as long as you get the right answer quicklySpoken like someone who's never had an open-notes exam.
>>97932662every test administered via zoom is an open book exam
>>97932309had same "problem" yesterday during a blood bowl LRB06 game, in the end we just checked the rulebook yeah we slow the play down but at least we know we're playing right. We can't remember every rule maybe we don't play for months (in my case was that) so we forgot some of even the basic rules.
>>97932309>So how do you lads teach yourself to remember the rules of TTRPGs/Wargames quickly?Skim read for general rules and concepts, as well as understanding the layout of the book. Full read to pick up anything I missed and further reinforce rules understand. Second skim read to go back through and note the location of important rules, and also to record a cheat sheet like >>97932445 mentioned.Taking the time to go through and write down the rules and asking yourself to reword them and commit your understanding of them to paper will help to improve your information retention. You can try to challenge yourself to fit everything on one page, but really the goal is to cement the ideas in your brain by reading them, rewording them, and recording them.
>>97932309as everyone else has said, if you are a player and cannot remember the rules you need to play the game, make yourself some note cards.
>>97932309just make cheat sheets dude
Visualize what you are reading. Use all your senses. Imagine the warmth radiating off of the ogre's taint. Get as many neurons involved as you can. If you grew up with screens you probably do have brainrot though. It is by experiencing life that we form the underlying network of connected memories from which inspiration is drawn.
>>97933535In case it hasn't been said enough, Making your own cheat sheet. Not using someone else's. Not asking an AI to make one. Read the book and copy down the stuff you need to know.
