He chose Horus' side because Guiliman remained loyal and Alpharius just wanted to prove that his tactics and way of doing things was superior to Guiliman's, which he ultimately did at the cost of his own life. To me, that always seemed pretty reasonable.Lorgar has always been the one that actually makes sense, dude wanted a god that he could worship, and when the Emperor expressly forbade him from doing that, he found gods that accepted his piety. Obviously all the particulars of each case have been written terribly because they are written by the sort of people who write Black Library books. That doesn't exactly attract talented writers, but I think most of them are conceptually sound, so when they are presented as a summary of few sentences they are alright.
