What makes a clan mech a 2nd line mech? I was thinking of this as I play with the kingfisher, vapor eagle, and omen. They are super solid mechs and don't see why they would not be considered good mounts for a clanner. Also something I noticed. For being the aerospace clan, does not look like they really designed aerospace fighters most clan fighters were designed by other clans.

>>97942515Clanners society lionizing competitiveness and where "up or out" is a toxic cultural trait that sees unspectacular competency as shameful means that riding in anything less than the best is a statement about your worth.
>>97942515Kingfisher isn't second line. It was popular and common among Clan Ghost Bear during REVIVAL. An old omni will tend to eventually be distributed among garrisons which explains its presence in second-line forces as newer designs came to the forefront.Vapor Eagle was a specialized dueling mech, which was strike one, and strikes two and three are being a battlemech. The fact they're good or not doesn't make them Omnis; which are almost strictly preferred for all leading-edge Clan forces. The Omen-- say it with me now-- was issued to garrison forces because it was a battlemech. It was designed specifically to bolster those forces.
>>97942608>>97942599You know, I did not even think about the Battlemech vs Omnimech. Makes a ton of sense in that context. Right I am dumb.
>>97942406newfag heresome guy mentioned "aces" last threadis that some way to play bt solo?
>>97942663I was that guy. Yeah, it's intended for Alpha Strike but you can really make it work for Classic with pretty much zero effort. Stuff for it is in the Aces: Scouring Sands box.

>>97942741thanks, sounds exactly like what I want.
>>97942741>>97942813I think I found it, it's just called "Battletech Aces rulebook" right?
>>97942826That's the rulebook that tells you how to use the cards, but it also requires about a hundred cards, picrel. They tell you how units move and shoot.
>>97942515I found out that the majority of 2nd line mechs are far superior to what Clan Forces usually use.
>>97943124Ah, I see. Well someone added the cards to a tabletop simulator mod so I'll try it there.
>>97942599> Clanners society lionizing competitiveness and where "up or out" is a toxic cultural trait-and is likely why during and after project revival, the clans had such an epidemic of Clanners “going native” and defecting to the inner sphere.Kinda makes one wonder what the clan’s holdouts do to distract themselves from problematic thoughts like: “are WE the problem?”. I suppose an upbringing that discourages things like “insight” and “self awareness” can help in a lot of cases.

>>97942480The best crusader is the 2R
>>97943556>I suppose when fully functional prosthetics are availableGoing by the equipment availability for Mechwarrior in TRO 3026, that never even became lostech, just expensive if you wanted a full myomer limb rebuild.
>>97943569Wasnt there also a stigma against cybernetics though? I know FWL had that, but thought Clanners also did.

In Adeptus Aitanicus one can play a Knight Household, which is an army made up entirely of Knights and Armigers. Could one make an army entirely of Protomechs in Battletech? I think it might be an interesting thing to try, though it may be a little dull to fight for my opponent.
>>97944098Yes, protomechs are fun, and have interesting strategies
>>97943840Based. Thanks anon, now I've canon colours to follow.
>>97944098Easy enough, if you think of a full star of proto's is 25 of them.
>>97944098>Could one make an army entirely of Protomechs in Battletech?Could? Yes. Should? Whole different question.
>>97944098No reason you can't run a full star of protos. It's not as bad as spamming vtols or hover craft due to how their initiative works, but moving and firing 25 units every turn will turn into a drag real quick
>>97944098Thanks to Hell's Horses and the Society we've got super light all the way up to ultraheavy Protomechs meaning on can form a battleline and hold it, flank, skirmish and so on with the various forms of Protomechs. Would it be strong? Likely not, but it could be quite an interesting and fun force to play.
>>97944112Feel free to bend the canon colors a little bit. The official unit description says “teal” but the art almost always trends toward turquoise instead. I like teal more so that’s just what I go with.

Here’s a hypothetical:Suppose you are a resident of the DC, no, you’re not a noble, nor a warrior, or even a DCMS enlisted. You’re just some schlub that needs a job. So you apply to work security for some company or another. Like normal security for an office building, shopping mall, industrial plant, something like that. So your training and expectations are that you show up with a Walkie-talkie, a heavy flashlight, maybe a tazer, probably not. And you sit at a security desk watching monitors or sometimes patrolling the grounds, maybe even drive a golf cart or Segway if it’s a larger facility. Really all you’re doing is chasing off hoodlums or calling the police if something serious comes up.Well after a month or two, something comes up at work from up top, and because you are among the “new guys” you get reassigned.Next thing you know you’re in the cockpit of a battlemech, fighting some rotating list of Lyrans, FedSuns, Pirates, and Clanners after only getting the most basic crash-course in how to pilot this thing. Because the head of the Zaibatsu family that owns the company that initially hired you wants to go play “Draconis Warlord”. I mean, you are being compensated, but it’s not what you were hired for.So… how are you holding up? How would you be handling the sudden career shift?

The DC is not the kind of place where a corp, no matter how large, could accumulate enough might to potentially resist Combine authority, it's why LAW doesn't have an army and why Teddy K had to cut deals with ComStar for off-the-books 'mechs and deals with yakuza to fill them. >>97944859That seems a very big shift. There are enough dispossessed warriors that there would be people lined up at the chance to get back in the cockpit with far more experience, and training to be put into the cockpit of a mech requires a lot more effort than just falling upwards. For Clan BA Stars, do they typically have all 5 points the Same suit or do they mix? Working specifically with Clan Snow Raven right now. Unsure if I should do all 5 as Elementals then do an All stormbird etc etc.I know that Aero each pair typically will be the same fighter so wondering if this is a similar vein for them.As an aside, What would be the best way to transport my BA outside of Omnimechs? Just provide them some omni vehicles or are there a good VTOL for the Clans/Dropship
How would this little fella fair in Battletech?
>>97947129It's basically a Fireball with a full head ejection system.
>>97947116Same suits. Both fluff and how they are deployed by the game rules.
>>97947129>20 tons>approximately the right height, but oriented weirdly for some reason>fast as balls>armed with a machine gun, a laser cutter, and an SRM2would do decently as a scout. I guess because it's longer than it is tall we should class it as a quad?
>>97947283Game rules each suit in a point has to be the same, but the Star isn't actually a game concept at all unless you're using some kind of optional or homeruled formation rules.
>>97947371A quad seems reasonable. It's hard to find Zoids that wont completely wreck any lance or star. Only the early stuff could feasibly be put in the game without being monsters. It's also easy for many zoids to swap weapons, so their listed load outs are not all of them. And a lot of the early weapons do not have specific barrel sizes or are just generic beam or laser guns until later stuff gets specific. Plus, there are the variants which are even better. Might as well post the wiki page for some of em. Take this for example. Besides its Charge Particle Gun, most of it's weapons are pitiful by BT standards, but nothing is getting past that armor and the aforementioned gun is gonna one shot anything AND out range it since it was made to combat something that had quad 360mm cannons that could shoot for miles.
>>97947432Swapping weapons is easily represented by making them omnis. When importing stuff from another system, I tend to just find an equivalent in the system it's going to. Like, the charged particle gun you mentioned, just based on name, I would equate it to a PPC and not worry about representing its abilities in the franchise it's from once I adapt it to BT.
>>97947283As >>97947429I am wanting to know Star Construction. Yeah every suit in a point has to be the same, but lets say I do 3 points of Elementals then two Stormbirds as an example. Is this correct from a lore perspective?
>>97947456I don't think there's hard rules on it, but also, with how many clans are short of material and skilled troopers at various points in the story I doubt anyone would blink at a mixed star of Elementals and Stormbirds, long as the points are distinct.
>>97947451I get that, but the CPC is what it's built around, turning it into a generic PPC makes it dramatically less lethal. Yeah, its the closest thing BT might have to it, or some laser, but it can wipe out a city. That's why the earlier stuff fits more. Besides the insane speeds involved.

Am I alone in thinking that the Combine, Cappellans, Lyrans, Taurians, and Canopus seem to have such big, meme-generating personalities that they, kinda drown-out all the other Inner Sphere factions?Like I know that I’m told that the FedSuns are “space Camelot”, and the FWL are a bunch of bickering minor states reminiscent of renaissance Italy, but when listening to Battletech YouTubers like science insanity, Sven van der Plank, Tex, mechfrog, Black Pants Legion, etc… or even come on here, they just kinda blend into the background.Like, I’m not kidding, I even wonder if “space Camelot” IS a fair take, and not just a personality grafted on by fans. but only because their entry in BT:Universe is so goddamn generic “good guy” that you can barely call it an identity, and honestly, they often feel more like an OpFor for the DC and CC than a distinct faction of their own.And the FWL is only somewhat better because they did get into a feud with ComStar in the 2nd succession war. And sometimes I hear stories that make it sound like house Marik is some put-upon cat-herder that is the only one taking the defense of the FWL seriously, and legally couldn’t step down even if they wanted to. (Which I like because it’s a humorous take). But, again, when covering major events they just come off like an OpFor in purple than a legitimate faction. But both are better than the Outworlds Alliance who… exist? Really they feel like they exist to be a punching bag. What are some good examples of these three actually presenting an actual personality we’re told they have in the lore? Showing some character? Because I’m struggling to find it myself.Because right now the goddamn Terran Hegemony has a more intriguing identity than either of them, and they’re just part of the backstory.
The Davion Man meme is the closest I have ever seen to an interesting and unique cultural identity for the Federated Suns.
>>97948540This sounds like a lack of familiarity on your part rather than any failing in the writing or lore. I hear plenty of jokes and talk about FWL and the FS.Periphery like the OA is always going to have less traction.
>>97948827Nah, he has a point, especially about Davion. FWL at least has a these constituent identities.
>>97948861I feel like I didn't imagine this whole self-righteous hypocrisy angle where "Davs are crusaders for the rights and liberation of their fellow man, so please excuse us for leveling the children's hospital it jumped into the line of fire." That's not counting the incest bits with the Lyrans. The only thing that tamps down some of the slander on Davion is they're sometimes trying to be "the good guys (tm)" which is more than can be said for most other Houses. It just makes it more obvious when they end up just doing Great House shit anyhow.
>>97948893>The only thing that tamps down some of the slander on Davion is they're sometimes trying to be "the good guys (tm)"As a front. The FedSuns formed from greed masquerading as mutual defense, one of the first things they did after establishment is pick a fight with the Taurians. They're the avatar of the "fair-weather friend" in the setting, just ask Kerensky when his buddy 'the honorable and upright' John Davion voted to strip him of the Protectorship instead of telling Robert Steiner to gobble his balls.
>>97942406Can I get a qrd on clans and why they hate contractions?
>>97949028The autistic heir to a guy had an Idea about how a perfect society should behave, and that included with speech patterns.
>>97949028They revere standardization and conformity to their interpretation of a fantasized and idealized Star League; including their official and formal language. Contractions are perverting the sacred words for personal convenience or implying the listener is not due proper respect.
>>97948540The Davion meme is that they are subhuman shorties. Only that it isn't a meme, but the word-of-god, highest canon reality according to a novel.
>>97949028Hundreds of years ago, there was a civil war that destroyed human unity across the settled galaxy. A large portion of the military of the crumbling unified government defected and disappeared. Turns out, they went to unexplored space and developed a new culture there called the Clans. The Clans built their whole society around genetically engineered warriors who interact through ritualized combat. About three hundred years after their ancestors disappeared from known space, the Clans returned as an invading force. They were initially unstoppable because they had managed to develop new technology, most notably the OmniMech. But the Inner Sphere powers banded together and defeated the invasion. Nonetheless, (some of) the Clans have been a permanent fixture of war and politics in the Inner Sphere ever since. They don’t use contractions because they think contractions are lazy and informal. However they do like neologism that condense two separate words into one (example: rising star becomes ristar).
>>97949044>>97949055Ah, so it's part of their weird take on how an ideal society should be.
Trying to think of an interesting place for the Spirit Cats and Dragon's Fury to fight over for my next campaign set in early/mid 3134. I'm not sure where it'll be set but it has to be somewhere important to the Republic or the Splinter Factions active in that year. The idea of the campaign is that the players have to choose a side and aid either the Cats, Republic or Fury in claiming something on said world for their chosen faction. Resources, manufacturing, a working HPG. Something important.Irian perhaps?
>>97949102Irian seems like an obvious choice for "Dark Age-era world with big battle fought over it" imo. Check out "Turning Points Irian"
>>97949078Clan culture is so artificial and rife with hypocrisy. Having to constantly consciously not use contractions is a good example of that.

>>97949484They really need to retcon weapons like IS LBX-20's, SSRM6's ER mediums etc existing during that period to give it something different and also fix that apparently nobody thought to design said weapons in other sizes despite them being around for well over 100 years by the Amaris Coup even if it does have a knock on effect on later content. Star League era would also lend itself more to a Battleforce style campaign play I'd say especially since each company is meant to be running the same mech and battles are meant to be that large anyway.

One of the big things I am noticing as I try to look through the books more as I study up on the Raven Alliance, is the lack of mention of a ton of things that were established in older lore books. The Field Manual Clan warden and Crusader went really in depth on stuff, but for instance the remaining Blood names. We know they allowed Homeworld clan blood names to make new blood houses in the inner sphere from the inner sphere. But for instance the Crow Blood name being taken by Cloud Cobra. You would think they would go ahead and do that for that name. Then there is the Mckenna name according to Sarna only has 5 or less bloodrights. You would also think they would mention that these blood names are being expanded on.Essentially, Bloodnames are FASFA numbersTo circle back though, really do wish we had good updates on stuff in that depth. I know it is a lot of work as example how long it took them to make handbook house Kurita.

We wrote the Cappellans to be so fucked that there’s no way to realistically have them survive the succession wars”-bring legendary, “I literally wrote the book on warfare” Sun Tzu back from the grave to save the Cappellans. Rifleman C3 is fucking nice. anyone else used this bad boy in games?
to whit"The modern Rifleman C 3 takes this concept further with purpose-built production rather than battlefield salvage. Trellshire Heavy Industries manufactures these units at their Twycross facility, integrating cutting-edge Clan technology with classic styling. The result is a garrison 'Mech that significantly outperforms its Inner Sphere ancestor while maintaining the familiar silhouette and handling characteristics that pilots appreciate. These designs appear throughout Clan garrison clusters in the Inner Sphere occupation zones, providing capable anti-aircraft coverage without consuming resources needed for front-line OmniMechs.Deployment:Clan Sea Fox introduced the Rifleman C 3 in 3132 as a commercially available modernization of the original Twycross garrison refit. Built on an Endo Steel chassis with Clan Ferro-Fibrous armor, each arm mounts a Series 7K ER Large Laser paired with a Type DL Ultra AC/5 and its ton of ammunition. Torso-mounted Series 6b ER Medium Lasers provide backup firepower while fourteen Clan double heat sinks finally give the configuration adequate thermal management. AC/20-proof armor across most locations makes the C 3 suitable for sustained combat operations. The matching range brackets of the primary weapons and manageable heat profile allow MechWarriors to maintain continuous fire without the discipline constraints that plagued earlier C variants."
"Clan Sea Fox recognized the commercial potential of the design and worked with Trellshire Heavy Industries to develop the Rifleman C 3 as a production model specifically for export. Unlike the salvage-based conversions or experimental Jade Falcon variants, the C 3 was designed from the start for reliable garrison duty. The combination of proven technology, reasonable cost, and familiar handling made it attractive to multiple customers. Both the Draconis Combine and Duchy of Oriente have acquired the design in small numbers, while Clan garrison forces continue deploying earlier conversion variants alongside the newer production models."
or the possibly even more fuckawesome Crusader 10S... anyone used this badass?"TharHes Industries' ultimate expression of Crusader evolution, the 10S variant combines cutting-edge Clan-specification technology with the classic design philosophy that made the original successful. The configuration utilizes an entirely Clan-tech equipment suite including endo steel structure and a powerful XL engine to achieve 86 km/h tactical speed. Each arm mounts a sophisticated combination of LRM-15 launchers with Artemis IV fire control, heavy machine guns, and ER medium pulse lasers, providing devastating firepower across all engagement ranges. Hip-mounted Streak SRM-6 launchers ensure reliable close-range capability while comprehensive ammunition storage with integral CASE protection maintains operational endurance. Fourteen double heat sinks manage the substantial thermal load from the advanced weapons suite. The 10S represents the theoretical pinnacle of Crusader development, incorporating centuries of combat experience with the most advanced technology available."
we even get a bunny ears warhammer that kills things real fucking good. the WHM C3."A Golden Century-era Clan rebuild popular with Wolf's Dragoons, this variant was reconstructed from the ground up using Clan technology. An endo steel internal structure and extralight engine provided substantial weight savings over the original Inner Sphere components, enabling a formidable weapon suite and advanced electronics. Each arm carried a Clan ER PPC, while both side torsos mounted an ER medium laser, a medium pulse laser, and a Streak SRM-6 launcher, providing exceptional firepower at all ranges. An ECM suite protected the design from enemy electronics warfare, and a targeting computer enhanced the accuracy of the already devastating weapons array. Seventeen double heat sinks could not manage a full alpha strike, requiring pilots to alternate between long-range and short-range weapon groups. Originally contracted by Wolf's Dragoons during their time among the Clans, this variant later entered broader production at Trellshire Heavy Industries on Twycross and the Arcadia BattleMech Plant, fulfilling requests from multiple Clan factions through Clan Sea Fox merchant channels."by ilclan its now common production for IS clan general. kell hounds very rare salvage, woofs goon's rare production and very rare salvage.so go kill clanner garrison filth and steal one. >the clans don't want you to know this, but warhammer c3's are free, you just go and take them. >>97948893> I feel like I didn't imagine this whole self-righteous hypocrisy angle where "Davs are crusaders for the rights and liberation of their fellow man, so please excuse us for leveling the children's hospital it jumped into the line of fire." But then where did you hear it? Because even this Isn’t exactly how I even heard it from the community. I heard it that, yes, they are, usually, the “good guys” but are so damn smug about it that this makes you hate them more than if they were the assholes. But again, this is a Battletech YouTuber saying this so… still not a direct source, or secondary source.>>97948996But where’s even this established? Yeah they tried to invade the Taurians back in the age of war, but most primary lore sources make it sound like the FedSuns just lost interest afterwards and never went back. Which, ironically, gives the Taurians some fun personality, because it makes their feud with the FedSuns seem more irrational and one-sided. Like for all these centuries the Taurians have been harboring this hatred for the FedSuns, amassing military equipment and training soldiers for the day the FedSuns try to invade them again, and there’s god-only-knows how much Taurian media there is vilifying the FedSuns; meanwhile Davion’s probably forgotten that they exist and needs to be reminded about them by advisers every now and again. But it this all paints a picture, to me at least, that the FedSuns don’t really have a personality, or not a distinct one at any rate, by default, and what most fans are doing is trying to graft something of a personality onto them just so they feel like a real faction, and not just “mooks in the yellow mechs”

>>97950698I think FedSuns suffer from being the early designated protagonists. They are defined by being the featureless faction that highlights the extremeties of the other factions while leaving enough unsaid so that readers can make whatever assumptions they want to identify with them. Their most distinct feature was "these guys are clever enough to beat long odds and are otherwise normal" so all the kids reading along could feel clever too.

It fucks hard enough they had to invent the Wolfhound to deal with it. I even like how its issues keep impacting the universe at large, like when they tried to upgrade the PPC to the more powerful Lord's Light 2 but the heat was so problematic the Panther pilots downgraded it back to the older model; this left a giant pool of unused LL 2s that eventually wound up in Akuma and No-Dachi, which with TSM especially appreciated the added heat.

>>97950366Nah, they cannot be that dismissive of art. They care about aesthetics way too much for that.>>97950392Granted, Clan Warriors may have contempt for or at least discomfort with the ‘labor’ of artistic production. But I have no trouble imagining they hold art as a means of communicating ideals in extremely high esteem. Similarly, a Warrior would not be involved in figuring out how to produce a new weapon much less manufacturing it. But they highly value those weapons. Now, the question is whether Warriors value them as merely a means to an end or have some deeper, aesthetic appreciation for them. Compare this to how a Dracaboo cares about his daisho beyond whether they are the right tool for the 32nd-century battlefield.>>97951014The Remberance is certainly the most famous and/or obvious example of the Clans producing art. It’s not just data but rather an intentionally poetic endeavor.
Kerensky’s project was to create a new form of society. He would require artists to help articulate and communicate this vision. The Clans from their earliest history would therefore necessarily require artists for this reason, if no other. I imagine that the style of early Clan-art would probably mimic Soviet-era socialist realism with even more grandiose emphasis on heroic imagery.
