Honestly my advice is to print a squad out, paint it up then do a blind test with someone. Or take them to a game amongst your other models (all painted) and see if anyone even notices. I doubt they will. Minis are very small and people can't see that well to discern surface level imperfections.

For better or worse, people tend to overlook the wrongs of one party if they're outweighed by the other. Brother I am so demoralized with AI advancements that I can't even find the will to learn drawing. So I doubt I would learn much Zbrush or Blender outside modifying existing STLs.

It was a decent quality scan as I recall (this was a couple years ago now). The bodies are split into torso and back, with pegs, and all went together perfectly. I'll dig the file out now for a screenshot of a part.

Thunk3d scanners are like 5k iirc and are as hi-fi as you'd need for minis. However the best scanners (as in, people who scan) are doing it with openscan 3d, which is freeware. The kit costs about $3-500 to get started; significantly less if you have a 3d printer. As with anything though, lower price means more manual input and they have honed it to a very fine craft. I considered doing it myself but would rather just wait for them to, lol. I have enough other timesink hobbies.

Apparently they've already started removing the 360 degree views from minis on the webstore. And only showing certain angles of minis during reveals, so the sculptors and prompters don't know what the off-camera side looks like.

Here you go, I've picked the very 'worst' looking piece of a good set and portrayed it in average light. I've painted plenty of printed versions of this torso and plenty of plastic, and honestly you can't tell the difference even in close-up "painting distance" viewing, if your printer is dialed in. That graininess in the screenshot isn't noticeable at all on a real print that's 20-30mm tall.

I see a lot of scans and tend to 'grade' them so that I know whether to bother opening them in future. I graded this one A-. I wouldn't print anything worse than a B, maybe B+. There are many objectively worse quality scans out there than this one, which was done by a known quality guy.

This warrior kit is very old though, so the scan/plastic difference may be more noticeable on a new kit with random sharp details in every open space.

Unfortunately not that I know of. Apart from sometimes when someone who received the file before you and then shared it onward may have renamed the file "{mini name} BAD SCAN" or something lol and that becomes its filename in the various sharing groups forever more.

Unless you have direct contact with a good scanner (which is very rare, they keep low profiles for obvious reasons and/or get nuked if they're too public), then you are pretty much limited to digging through files in sharing groups, then opening them and manually inspecting the quality of the scan, the integrity of the mesh, whether there are any floating bits of mesh not connected to the model. Sometimes you'll open a file and the scan isn't even cleaned up, you can still see the crocodile clip that was used to hold the mini while it was scanned. Sometimes you might download a file of 10 old minis to find that 3 of the poses are missing; sometimes you'll download a file with a poor naming convention and open it to realize you've already got that file under a different name, but this one has 2 of the 3 poses that were missing from the other file.

So basically unless you have direct links to a good scanner, or you're paying someone to fix issues with a mesh (which is its own process of diagnosing and deciding how to fix based on time vs efficiency vs significantly altering the original), it's just a lot of legwork going through files to find something you are happy with. There are some quality ones out there though, picrel as an example.

You ideally use separate images for front, back, left and right. I haven't explored much yet, but there is some topology stuff I think.

Yeah unfortunately it looks like the group was nuked, I haven't checked in on them in a few months now. Some of them are talking about recent nukings, like in April, so it seems still ongoing.
99.9% it'll have been done with the openscan 3d though, the plastic model in the photo has been prepared in the way they tend to be done for openscan (dark primer, fine white dots).

said, the topology (quality of the mesh) is pretty fucked, but surprisingly not fucked in the biggest areas. My findings in case of interest:

yeah I was purposely ambiguous before lol, just to make that point really! I couldn't help myself.
There is genuinely no discernible difference between the plastic and the printed models IRL, until you pick one up. The printed ones are denser and colder to the touch, ever so slightly. But just looking at them, even up close, imperceptible.
(They're printed at 0.03mm layer height fwiw, so layer lines are similarly almost imperceptible. That'd be the biggest giveaway if I'd printed them at a larger, more visible layer height.)

the warriors on the right are the prints (look at their bases, I used badly printed ones)

the sorcerer is a print of a by-hand resculpt of a scan

I don't want to oversell it but pretty much yes. At anything more than 1foot away you wouldn't see any, and closer than that (with good eyesight) you may see very very small concentric rings on only the most spherical of surfaces (e.g. the top of a round helmet). But if you're not looking for them, you won't see them. Once painted, you're even less likely to see them. And of course before priming, the color of the resin is already a big giveaway that it's not plastic.

For comparison: after priming and basecoats with properly thinned paints through an airbrush, I've then put thinned contrast paint over a mini printed at 0.05mm layer height, and when the contrast dried you could see a very tiny circle at the top of its head where the contrast settled round a layer line.
(It was a skeleton, so a light bone basecoat, dark brown contrast, and perfectly round smooth skull - so pretty much the perfect environment to see layer lines, almost a torture test really)
No such issue when printing at 0.03mm layer height though. Some people print at 0.02 but I've never seen the need.

I redid the eviscerator berzerkers, they were too similar with the same pose and swords were a bit too big to sit in the unit nicely. Have kept the old ones to paint though because they're funny.

Been working on a fast-swap painting handle for an upcoming project, pretty proud of it

Found a copy of the RGG paint handle on makerworld, which uses 10x2mm magnets in the top of the handle and the bottom of the cap to hold them together, you can rotate the cap 360 degrees, and switch it out for another cap in a couple seconds. Unfortunately, the file I found has the magnet holes positioned flush in the printed parts. This means the cap and the handle are pulled together with no gap between them, PLA on PLA, so the rotation of the cap isn't very smooth, it sticks and grinds.

So I remade the connections from scratch in blender, and made the magnets stick out of their housings by 0.5mm each. That way there's no PLA on PLA, it's just magnet on magnet, and the rotation is buttery smooth with a nice bit of resistance to it.

You're supposed to use poster-tac on the top of the RGG cap, which you push your mini into, so their cap has a lip around the top edge to keep the poster-tac in. But all my minis bases are magnetised, so I wanted a magnetic surface for them to sit on instead. So I've flattened off the top of the cap in blender, and found some 30mm steel discs on amazon which I've glued onto each cap, picrel.

Rounded off the bottom of the handle for comfort, added a magnet to its base so it's secure when I want to set it down, and printed the handle + 30 caps in fuzzy skin. Easy prints. All tested too and works a treat. Have also made a magnetised tray to hold the caps for easy bulk transport of minis on caps from room to room.

Going to try plasti-dipping the handle tomorrow to give it a soft-touch finish, and then this project should be good to go. And not a minute too soon, because tomorrow I'm supposed to be airbrushing 30 goblins lol.

Elegoo is good ! Resin is everything . If you cheap out on resin the models will be brittle, fragile or have print failures more often . In my experience once i switched to sirayatech fast 99% of issues fixed. Only thing i would change is mixing in some flexi stuff. Im looking to buy a 3D scanner for preserving old resin model kits. Most of the parts are very detailed and about the size of warhammer limbs while others can be as big as 8 inches. Is Openscan classic a good option? Are prebuilt consumer scanners better? The upper limit for my budget is about $1400 USD.

Some of the best scanners (as in people) use openscan. From what I understand it requires some manual cleanup but for a scan that requires no further work you're really looking at $5k+ for jewellery or dental scanners. With openscan it's more "what you put in, you get back" effort-wise, but the results can be excellent with the right amount of input.

Honestly nothing you read on the site can be trusted and should be entirely ignored (it doesn't document v2 of the mini or even the midi at all) The entirety of openscan is unbelievably poorly documented and advertised. The entire project is basically on the discord and github now.
Right now the hawkeye works with both the current beta and the composer fork.
I'd advise building the current mini (v2.4). If you read about the black shield, know that the only real advantage it has is better lighting and a header for an endstop, but isn't really required.

First time trying out hollowing. Lychee voxel hollowing is really easy, you can rectangle select bits that you don't want to hollow. Dunno if it's worth subscribing for though, I'm on free trial atm.

Depends on the resin / filament. There's some very strong stuff around. Also mixing in a rubbery resin can give some flex to stop it shattering / breaking.

I would think so. Compared to its other RTS contemporaries, it's not exactly deep and objective control mechanics are how you get your main resource, and being secondary media from 3rd to 4th Edition days - is prone to fucking up lore tidbits here and there. The expansions were a bit rocky but they do fill out the factions quite considerably, heard the remaster wasn't too bad after a good bunch of updates, but using a 64-bit executable was a selling point for more stable modding. Also where the Blood Ravens got a starring role, and to this day both /tg/ and /v/ still love repeating the hammy unit lines verbatim.

The second set of games is more like Real Time Tactics. The campaign follows the aforementioned space marine chapter gearing their squads and defending their recruiting worlds while earning their meme reputation. The game feel is better but it's not a good game for skirmishing against the AI and the scope isn't really about big battles, though there's a crowd that swears by its competitive multiplayer (albeit with the Elite Mod). Also has a three player co-op mode where you kit a character out before defending back-to-back waves of enemies like a diet ASSFAGGOTS.

DoW3 is shit, and the upcoming DoW4 isn't being made by Relic. Could go either way but the trailers are not convincing.

He's a Word Bearers so yes Chaos Lord in Dark Crusade who canonically jobs to the magpies, but has a smooth voice. In DoW II's expansion he comes back working for the Black Legion with a new VA, and then jobs again, before a scene at the end of it shows him in some sort of chamber before Abaddon lets him out. Guess he really wanted the magpies dead for some reason, because Eliphas canonically jobs a third time in Retribution. I guess that they can just keep 3D printing him or some shit.

Anyone here printed Monsterpocalypse stuff with an FDM printer? I'm looking at getting an A1 and I really wanna play that game.

How come if you go from a 0.4mm nozzle to a 0.2mm one, the print time skyrockets, but if you go from 0.4mm to 0.8mm it doesn't at least halve itself, even if I don't care about visible lines or print quality? What setting am I missing in Bambu Studio?

1 blender unit is 1 mm (it says 1m, but stls use it as 1mm).
so just build the model, make sure the contact points are the same size. depending on shape you can do different techs. if you want find an stl of the physical model, thats always the best to make sure it matches. but its not like a single print costs anything from testing.

I fixed it, I made the mesh solid in meshmixer then when i imported back to blender I could smoooth that area properly. Body is done now. Will work on the arms when I get home then I'll upload it for my /3dpg/ bros.

no tutorials just googling every now and then. The base model is an AI gen from tripostudio from photos of a model I own.
zbrush is probably good if you can use it, I'm not gonna sink 100 hours into learning what I could just pick up in 1 hour in blender.

Had a major blowout last night in my old saturn 2. Half a quart of resin leaked down into my internals, through the printer kept trucking through all of it so idk if it actually damaged the electronics. I follow the instructions for how to remove the back plate and open it up, but there's fucking hot glue on all the connectors. So what do I do, just swish some IPA through the case and hope?

If the printer's still running then it didn't hurt the electronics, so forget all that for now. How did the resin get in? Through the hole that the motor's lead screw projects out of? If so, your stepper motor is full of resin and its days are now numbered. Clean it out (if the resin hasn't gunked up too badly) or replace it.

I think the issue here is the base model you are ripping is highlighting the limbs. I'm guessing there is also a body model somewhere on the same site that would be better than the darkened one you used.

Amount of bodies has nothing to do with print speed. Height of the tallest part is all that matters.
Increase burn in layers, and maybe also lift height if your fep is loose in the center. It could be that your plate is not raising high enough, and the fep just sticks to it constantly in the middle.

Too many factors left unstated brother, difficult to pinpoint the issue.. Are you using presupported files or doing the supports yourself? Is your printer brand new or pre-owned? How many successful prints have you had, other than the 32mm base? What's the ambient temperature in your printing room? What resin are you using and how old is it? Have you dialed in the resin so that you know your exposure times are correct, or are they a community profile? If you print your files from USB, are you using the USB stick that came with the printer (looks like no if it's that sandisk one)?

Yes I've had many succesful prints besides the base. I printed a fully loaded plate a few weeks ago and it all came out good.

I'm using siraya tech ABS like resin I got off amazon and it's maybe 6 months old. Not the resin in the tank, the bottle itself.

I haven't touched any of the settings or played with customization options. Idek what a community profile is or dialing resin.

It's a sandisk cruzer USB but I've used it recently with no issues. I've used a seagate portable 1TB drive also before but my printer sometimes won't read it so I'm using this USB.

My plate is pretty low but that might because I don't have a lot of resin in the vat. It's more than enough but it's under half capacity. pic rel is as high as it's rising.

half the plate didn't even print and the rest almost didnt

The heads that DID print came out fine. Two of the bodies have this weird hanging piece of support that never formed. The third body failed and this floating piece was left hanging.
