Would you rather play a dungeon crawl type board game where you select your character class and are bound to that until the end of the game or a classless system where if you simply upgrade your stats to required number you can do whatever you want as you progress through levels?

For example, if you play as a fighter-type character, you'll never be able to cast magic and vice versa, if you play a mage you'll never kick ass in combat with weapons wearing the trendiest new armor.

In a classless system you could play a few levels as a fighter and then switch over to magic by upgrading your Intelligence and/or wisdom. You still retain your fighting skill and can even continue to upgrade that but you'd now be able to cast some beginner magic to help you along.

Myself I like the simple convienence of strict classes but I also like the idea of being able to tailor your character build as you progress to be a jack of all trades if you want.

The downside just seems to be that with a classless system it complicates everything else in the game. You have to account for every possible build and balance it all out so there isn't some meta that overpowers everything. Which gets very complex fast. With classes, you just create the rules for each class and balance their power by level. Each class has their specific abilities and powers and none of the other classes can use each others stuff so to speak.

You don't HAVE to, and very few do. More usual is relying on the end users to prune options down to an enjoyable experience.

Yeah, there's no need for the people selling a product to quality-control it. Why take pride in your work, when you can just let your fans run damage control when people get uppity?

Yes, I use that line of argument against GURPS a lot.

As a gurps fan I prefer the line that gurps is unbalanced on purpose because reality isn't balanced.
