Whether its RPGs or Wargaming do you and your groups find substances like beer or weed get in the way of playing or enhance it? Any good or bad experiences surrounding this topic? I drink a couple of beers when I am playing 40k or DMing it slows the game down a bit due to the double checking of rules due to impaired memory but taking a 4 hour game and making it take 5 hours doesnt seem like a big deal to me.
It depends entirely on the person. One guy drinking a 6-pack might be perfectly fine but the wrong guy drinking it could completely derail the game.
>>97965285I spoke a lot of weed and always puff during the games, apparently I'm chill enough that nobody even noticed after a couple of years of playing online. Lately I've been starting to drink a lot heavier and I've been spending the last couple of sessions getting way too hammered before the end of the game, and honestly I'm not really pleased with that. It's hurting myself and it's hurting the game.Probably because I'm not happy drinking, doing sad angry drinking
I guess /tg/ and /tv/ are very different boards. A substance use thread on /tv/ would have gotten 20 replies by now.
>>97965470/tv/ is a normie board. Most people on /tg/ are shutin basement dwellers who don't drink socially.
>>97965285I’d really prefer people not smoke or drink hard liquor because it makes them retarded and slows the game to a crawl but i’ve never had a problem with someone having a couple beers.
We usually meet up to play in a bar so the default is having a drink or two, no one is any worse for wear because of it. The only slow one is the one that barely cares about the game and mainly comes to hang out with us, even when he drinks zero alcohol he's still slow.
Drunk games and sober games are very different experiences, while games with two beers are usually enjoyable. The occasional very drunk game with good friends can be hilarious, but is probably exhausting as a regular event. My semi-weekly game on a week night is 95% sober, both due to everyone having work the next day and to two or three players driving to the game. The only clear bad experience is when just one player is drunk, that has never worked out.
>>97965285Depends. I dont mind a few drinks or being a little high. But burnouts who get trashed ruin the game. And some people cant handle just a couple drinks or just getting a little high. If you get them started, they will get trashed. And that sucks. I should know--I am one of those. Its why I stopped drinking. If I ever had a glass of wine during a game, you had one hour before its a mess. One of my current players is similar. If I can tell he has been drinking, then he isnt playing. We play online since Covid, but I can usually tell pretty quick. I have only had to kick him outa a session once.
>>97966811It's cool that you have a local bar that will let you play there, the only bar in my side of town is usually so busy they give you time limits on how long you can stay.>>97966844I agree.Only one person was drunk it would probably be a pain in the ass unless they are some kinda functioning alcoholic. The only time i've ever caused a problem with my drinking at the table is when i've been too loud late at night. At that time we were playing from 8pm to 2am on Saturdays. I figured it wouldn't be a problem because it wasn't a work night but the guys who's apartment it was practically had an ulcer.
>>97966895Ive had this issue running D&D with 2 stoners in the group. They are always trying to make a joke out of everything even when the stakes were high. That would come up with convoluted plans that wouldn't work. This was during 4th edition when what your characters were able to do was very highly codified mechanically unlike 3.5 which they were used to. Ive also played 40k drunk and stoned with other drunk stoned guys and it only makes the game take longer. Never had any serious problems besides the occasional forgotten special rule.
>>97965285It just depends >>97965404 is right. A few beers or a few puffs usually won't cause any harm but some people can't help but become a wreck.
I'm a wizard in the weekly game (we play online with roll20 and voice chat) and i have 5 to 11 beers in the 3-4h session.Nobody has ever noticed.
>>97965285My alcoholism ruined several sessions back in the day. And now, most of my groups are sober people. My rule is, it isn't a problem until it's a problem. If a player wants drink a few beers over the course of a four hour session, okay. But getting really even slightly drunk is only ever going to detract.
>>97965285In my experience drinking in moderation imduring sessions is fine, but I haven't really found it to enhance the experience. I usually just drink soda or mineral water when playing, but most guys in my group have a couple of beers, and it hasn't caused any issues.
>>97965285While I'm a teetotalling nerd, I don't think substance use necessarily detracts from the game. That said, I've had players show up drunk before and they're worse off for it. By the same token I've had people show up half-asleep or just very distracted by other immediate matters, and that doesn't work out either.I suppose, like most things outside the game, the occasional distraction can add to the experience, but a constant stream of distractions will consistently fuck things up.
>>97965470/tg/ is pretty much dead, this has been asked before and isn't worth answering again
>>97965504druk threads on /tv/ are for alkies not people who just happen to drink
>>97966909>It's cool that you have a local bar that will let you play thereI own itBut there are other places that do the same, there's game nights here or there once a week.
>>97968854Cool. I tried buying a share of one of my local bars during COVID when the owner was desperate but he just didnt want to give up complete control after a few hours of talking to him. He made it through the lockdowns on his own thankfully. I'm not rich or anything I just won a $75k through a lawsuit in early 2019 and was looking for hard asset investments. I ended up putting it in silver and gold and that worked out beautifully.
I don't drink alcohol like at all, except for maybe a glass of wine or champagne in christmas or something. In fact, I don't even know what it is like to feel drunk.
>>97969058Being outright drunk is kind of meaningless because you will forget half the time you were drinking but I have a couple of beers every week. I used to have a serious drinking problem. December 2024 I spent a grand total of $1200 on alcohol. After that shitshow I started down the path of reducing my drinking and now I only spend about $200/month on alcohol. I have a trust fund and pension and don't work anymore so there was no responsibilities my drinking was fucking up so it just grew out of control over the time since I started the pension.
>>97969075>I have a trust fund and pension and don't work anymoreNow im imagining running a D&D game at the old folks home. You could easily fit in 2 sessions a week with so little else to do.
>>97967680If you're doing 11 beers in 5 hours I can guarantee they notice, they just don't care or feel to awkward to bring it up. Also, for your own sake, don't make that a weekly habit.
weed smokers at the table are atrocious. It's distracting, mind-numbing and smells awful. weed smokers online have to be constantly prodded to interact, or they get so stoned they might as well not be there. excessive drinking at the table is bad, as it inhibits socialization, fine motor control and is a spill hazard. excessive drinking online leads to poor communication and distraction, leaving the party down a member.
>>97969075One of my players is a recovering alchoholic, so I and the rest of the players don't drink during the game.
>>97967680>Nobody has ever noticed. If you really drink a six pack minimum per session this probably isn’t true, they’re too polite to confront you.
I'm ok with drinking as long as it is kept to "loosen up a bit" and not "which of these dice do I roll again?" levels.
>>97972100I've had far more negative experiences with drinking at the table than people stoned at the table, but I know some very motivated potheads.
>>97965421>Lately I've been starting to drink a lot heavier and I've been spending the last couple of sessions getting way too hammered before the end of the game, and honestly I'm not really pleased with that.>It's hurting myself and it's hurting the game.My brother, I have walked where you walk. Good on you for being self aware enough not to let your coping mechanism fuck up your friendships and table.
>>97965285A beer or two is ok, getting shitfaced during play isn't fun IMO because it tends to derail the game
I need 2 or 3 beers to loosen up enough to RP my characters. I specifically like to play personality types that I am not IRL so it helps me get in the zone. Ive only ever gotten to drunk to participate effectively once.
