Seriously, what's with all these new Youtube channels I've seen over the years that try to jump into the TTRPG streaming bandwagon? It's either with vtuber models, piss-poor webcams, and with some overly gaudy overlay. Then three to four fucking hours of a slapdash game over a VTT with a bare minimum amount of production value. In almost all cases it's fresh channels that try to do this. No previous fans that were asking for this, no backing from any company, just going out with it seemingly on a whim. Then they try to fill their shorts with snippets from the sessions, sometimes even spending what I can only assume is either far too much money or time in animating it. All for them to often never break above 5k views, never mind 10k.Is it really worth the hours of effort for that return? I've never looked at what Youtube pays or if they even bother to do so when your views are so minimal. What drives these people?
>>97970687>I'M GOING TO BECOME THE NEXT CRITICAL ROLE!!!There's your answer OP. There's money to be made. Why wouldn't they try to become the next CR?
>>97971082Because the failure rate is immense, especially for these channels that pop out without any previous backing. If some voice celebrity or some other Youtuber that already has thousands of viewers decides to do it then that's different. You have at least a foundation of fans that are likely that not to peep in and see if that's what they like.TTRPGs are a niche, and those that watch hour-long livestreams of it are a niche within a niche. Doesn't make the least bit of sense to me to start there which is why I'm asking if I'm missing something obvious or if they are all just plain hyper retarded.
>>97970687the US economy and the job market is fucked beyond repair that's what's
>>97971773I don't think these people have the critical thinking to understand that. Their brains go "CR is famous for doing this, I can do this, therefore I can get famous for doing this" without thinking about the how.
>>97970687>My friends and I did this because it's fun This goes out to you, our dedicated lone viewer
>>97970687i stream my games mostly because i don't write shit down and my players like watching them
>>97971873moar like people are willing to take any chance because they are desperate I'm pretty sure they've made a list and stopped right before >onlyfans>selling drugs>prostitution
>>97970687i'm going to stream myself playing a solo rpg just to spite you, anon. unedited, single take, burps and farts and everything.
>>97971877An actual good use but I'd probably get banned from Youtube for all the slurs my group slips out.>>97971898Buddy, I don't watch any of this other than for a few seconds out of curiosity. You do you. Maybe you can get a fanbase of fart lovers going or something.
>>97971892I understand the need to have a side gig, I'm just saying they're not capable of understanding how to make that side gig work.
>>97970687same reason people play the lottery.
>>97970687Lots of people play ttrpgs. They prolly think "hey why not turn on a camera and put it on youtube?"
>>97970687>why do naive people jump at a small chance of turning a hobby into a goldmineHow fucking retarded are you?
>>97971862It's unironically over if you're not part of the top 10% nowadays, the bottom 90% have to do sidegigs like paid DMing in an attempt to gain a fraction of the top 10%'s gains on assets
>>97971773>Because the failure rate is immense, especially for these channels that pop out without any previous backingNobody knows about the failures, so I suspect that the prospective failures-to-be likely only see the big successful ones and think "hey, I could do that!"
>>97970687Are any of these people trying to be the "next critical roll?" What is it about dunderheads on /tg/ that they think the default thought is>If I cannot literally be the most possibly successful in this venture, I obviously cannot do itThere are plenty of much smaller streamers/podcasters/content creators who still make a decent living with a tiny fraction of CR's fanbase. If you get, say, 50,000 subscribers on YouTube, you could probably do YouTube full time. You're not gonna be a millionaire, but you could live decently. 50,000 people is fuckin' nothing.
>>97970687Obviously it's for the money, but I think it must be something fun for so many people to try it.
>>97970687They're playing traditional games, with video evidence of it, and you're posting on a dying messageboard.
>>97972342I think the question is, title notwithstanding, a bit less about becoming the bestest of them all and just gaining that tiny fraction of a fanbase in the first place. Like, you see the views those sorts are getting. There is one at half a million views that clearly blew up but the rest are below the thousand level mark. Not sure if it's going to be a matter of just gaining a few more fans each day because discoverability is fucking dead on Youtube.
>>97970687Did you just wake up out of a coma or something? People want to be the next famous e-celeb/streamer. So they keep trying. Some find minor success, so they keep going, hoping that one day they hit the jackpot and become famous so they can quit their job and be a full time "content creator"
>>97970687>Rocket Boots and Cuck Chairslittle too on the nose don't you think
>>97970687They want to be famous and try to ape stuff they like that they think can get them there.>>97971773The type of person who does this invariably doesn’t consider the possibility of failure because they overrate themselves and automatically assume they’ll be one of the few to make it.
>>97971909streamer anon hereyou'd be surprised
>>97971773>b.. but what if you failStay working for someone else forever
>>97972342I feel you, but I also don't think that OP is wrong. Like, I love the idea of using a TTRPG stream as background noise, but I'm so fucking sick of all these jackasses trying to lazily copy the CR formula. I genuinely struggle to find streamers who are either just genuinely running games or trying to find their own niche.
>>97972779I miss when the internet wasn't entirely monetized and people just made shit because they wanted to
>>97971909>Maybe you can get a fanbase of fart lovers going or something.Only if he is a cute girl or a faggy femboy
I've considered turning one of my games into a livestream just to get my players to stay on topic. It actually sucks because the plot of one our games is almost novel-tier in just how well the world came together, it has the classic "four color factions that people can decide are literally me" like Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, it has multiple really interesting major plots, it's just so much fun and every session ends with a genuine cliffhanger, there is a "main character" but he carries the story so no one complains.I regret that I didn't record all of our sessions, only maybe one or two of them tops, and edit them together into something listenable, maybe 1/2 hour episodes from a 2 hour session, but I know that that would have been a ton of editing work I didn't want to do. I just wish I could share the game somehow, but in the context of it being a genuine RPG campaign that evolved and grew. At least I have my detailed campaign notes.
I started recording my games on a whim a couple years ago, and I'm glad I did; my dad had joined halfway through the campaign, and died halfway through the next. It's nice having several hours of interacting with him on record.
>>97977798RIP to your dad. That's cool though. I think pictures of common things like that, or short video clips, are severely underrated. I used to make fun of people taking pics of their D&D games for Instagram. I don't do that now, but I have taken a few snapshots of our game. Just cause someday I'll want to look at them.
>>97977798That's honestly really sweet, anon. I sorry about your Dad, but glad you could make and save some memories with him.I record sessions ostensibly so I can review things and note down any important stuff, but ultimately they just became a time capsule of the good times I had from a better time in the collective lives of all of my players and self.
>>97977798That's pretty awesome that you could capture it. Nice to have something to treasure like that.
>>97970687Critical Role itself is a bandwagoner, it just broke big. The original is I Hit It With My Axe on the Escapist, which was the most honest form of the genre because all the players were hot whores. As in, literal whores, making porn and prostituting themselves for a living. Everyone else just doesn't have the guts to go all the way with their pandering.
>>97978749>As in, literal whores, making porn and prostituting themselves for a living.that's disgusting. can I have their nom de cumme so I can avoid these destructive harlots penetrating my hobby?
>>97979063Mandy Morbid, Kimberly Kane, a couple others whose names I don't remember, I think Charlotte Stokely. The best known of them in nerd circles though is easily Satine Phoenix who insanely went on to become some sort of WotC brand ambassador for D&D despite having done, among other things, 5-6 days of Training of O where the kink.com guys degraded her, beat her and fucked her to bits.
>>97979150>among other things, 5-6 days of Training of O where the kink.com guys degraded her, beat her and fucked her to bits.that's a bold accusation. as a man of refined intellect i can't just take your word on this. i will have to go and personally investigate the evidence while the rest of you continue this conversation.
>>97971773>Because the failure rate is immenseSo? That's true for literally every fucking in in the universe. There's ALWAYS a million who fail for every one who succeeds. That is the law of the cosmos. That is life. If you avoid things because you "might fail" you will never achieve anything.>>97972906>The type of person who does this invariably doesn’t consider the possibility of failure because they overrate themselves and automatically assume they’ll be one of the few to make it.Or they're simply aware of the fact that they risk nothing. They risk absolutely nothing. It doesn't cost fucking anything to stream yourself playing RPGs. It doesn't matter if they fail. They can fail a million times and only need to succeed once.
>>97979194Don't miss the bit where they make her squat with her tongue out and beg like a dog for cock, or the bit where they put her blindfolded in a pillory, whip her and make her admit that she's a slut while they spitroast her. Those are some of the most intellectual parts.
>>97970687Critical Role only worked because they weren't all literal whos in the first place
>>97970687They don't make a lot of money and are trying to supplement their income by monetizing their hobby as well
>>97979063> Nom de cummeI actually laughed out loud.
