>Tl;dr How can I get a magnet out after supergluing it?
So....yeah I fucked up, I was magnetizing a mini (admech torso) and the glue dried before I could properly fit the magnet, now its in but the angle is really awkward and doesn't pose as I wanted it to. To clarify I used regular store superglue, so cyanoacrylate (fuck spelling this).
So now I have my mini in the freezer in the hopes it will brittle the glue enough to break the magnet out without fucking the model.
The magnet is in the hole I made for it, just deeper on one side and angled.
Any piece of advice for this would be greatly appreciated, I'll hold onto trying to break it out for a while after posting.

soak in ammonia-free detergent and water

use a superglue remover specifically designed for plastics

avoid acetone and superglue removers which contain it, which is most of them as they're usually nearly pure acetone with additives to justify charging more money and make you think they work better, usually for home use you're better off using plain acetone than wasting money on superglue remover

cold will embrittle the glue but that's not likely to help you much as embrittlement it isn't going to weaken it much, brittle and weak are not synonyms in material science

you're better off with higher temp than colder, around 80 °C will significantly weaken the CA bond, 100 °C is better, a hot water bath might be easier to control than a heat gun since it can take a while for heat to penetrate the plastic, though if your magnet is coated in nickel to make it shiny this can conduct the heat much faster to where you want it

you'll need to look up the plastic you're using if it's safe to heat it past 80 °C as something like PS will soften in boiling temp water and will dissolve in acetone both of which might be against your wishes

go slow, scratch off a little at a time once the solvent or heat has penetrated and softened it

be careful with pliers as the nickle coating isn't very strong on rare earth magnets and you can break through the coating and crush the magnet which is both brittle and weak

Thanks anon, I think I'll give the heat treatment a shot later, I'll stick a magnet to a piece of sprue to test it out first. Screnshot this so I can test the rest as well, wish me luck and thank you a lot

You're welcome. Hope someone else has something to add since I don't know everything and there might be much better ways.

something Ive never tried because I only thought of it now is a soldering iron, if the magnet is metal coated that should heat up the surface quickly and so soften the glue all around to the point where you could use pliers to give it a twist and a pull

don't touch it with your finger to test if it's hot enough, it could easily be hot enough to blister skin instantly, though that probably would mean it's weakened the glue a lot too

irons get hotter than needed to melt a lot of plastics which will normally melt before you run the risk of damaging a Nd magnet so use caution and set the temp low if you have an adjustable iron

good luck, if it works please let us know so others can learn from your experience

Hello again, I did a small test with sprues, maybe I can get some solvents to try later.
Soapy water didn't do much for me, maybe for a longer test?
Heat worked alright, but it made the glue more flexible so it took some digging. I boiled some water and let it sit for a bit, after soaking the model I added a little bit more from the pot to.keep temperature. It did warp the plastic a little bit from force applied so I would suggest to be careful or reserve it for thicker pieces.
Cold worked surprisingly well, though I would suggest drilling a small hole besides the magnet so you can pry more effectively (in case of no access for pliers), a small amount of pressure made the glue break and the magnet flew off. Ended up doing cold for the mini and worked fine, just needed some clean up of the old glue after.

Well done, anon. Drilling a hole for more leverage was clever.
In my experience freezer works and acetone works, but acetone will also attack PS minis.

That's really cool. Glad you got it out and for telling us what worked.
