Oh shit, I need one of those Pups, that card expensive? And yeah he definitely draws a lot of attention. Early Ouroboroid or even Tromell can set shit off so fast people need to focus you or die.
I always recommend it because it works so well on a budget too, cheap, weak stuff can be used to great effect like Conclave Mentor, Botanical Brawler, Skatewing Spy, etc etc. Obviously mine has expensive stuff but I've upgraded it plenty.
Didn't realize there was a new thread lmao
>>
>>97987213
It's like 8 dollars according to TCGPlayer.

Tidus does seem pretty arms-racey. Cleanest way to deal with him is to combo faster or play boardwipe tribal. Neither seem too fun in lower brackets.
>>
>>97987213
I've found pic related to be one of the best cards I added to mine. Even if someone smokes an important early game creature you can bring it back with flying counter then move it onto Tidus or another creature without summoning sickness to get a free shot and a proliferate trigger. I've won games off of just shuffling this flying counter onto something gigantic after I bring back Noble Hierarch or whatever the fuck.
>>
>>97987248
How often does the worst case scenario of needing the mass evasion but not having a good target in the card occur?
>>
>>
>>97987230
Oh not bad at all, I may need to pick one up next week if my store has any! Thanks
And yeah, he can be, and he can get out of hand really really fast if they don't keep up. I've had games where I'm killing a player with Commander damage and a second player with normal combat damage by like turn 7 without any ramp because of Rikku, Oroboroid, and Trommell
Shit can be bonkers
>>97987248
I might have to pick up a copy of that, I have very little recursion in my deck because I have so many creatures so i pivot pretty quickly from one strat to another.
>>
>>97987257
Not often, my curve is extraordinarily low and aggressive. No need to play more than a few things that cost more than 3 mana since every creature is Tarmogoyf, they will grow and get big. I'm rarely strapped for small creatures hanging out in the grave to pluck out if I just need the flying counter.

Ouroboroid is almost game changer level imo. Sure played normally it's impact isn't initially huge, but any way to put an extra counter or two or more on it before its first boost and it absolutely explodes. Any time I've dropped it if it's not immediately answered it just Craterhoofs the table. Any starting hand where I have it means I'm almost always going to win t6-7 if someone doesn't have removal.
>>
>>97987303
>>97987346
I really don't get why they did this. It seems like it was more work to copy pasta the old ring and run it through a watermark tool remover to get rid of the text than if they'd just googled Gold Ring Stock Image and just used that.
>>
>>97987447
Dan Frazier being 81 years old might be the main factor at play, but I wouldn't be surprised if something fishy was going on behind the scenes.

Makes you wonder how many other artists/creatives behind the scenes are pissed off and fed up with WotC/Hasbro's weird dickery. SquareEnix had to send someone there to make sure they weren't going to give Tifa an afro and make Cloud polynesian. Larian has publicly bitched out Hasbro about how hard it was to work with them for Baldur's Gate 3 and severed ties. They bungled the Monster Hunter secret lair so bad Capcom is making them redo it.

It's no wonder the art nowadays looks so bland and AI generated. Any artists who want to show case their own unique flair are probably fighting uphill battles from start to finish. Why the fuck not just phone it in and make the blandest mobile game looking art imaginable, especially if you can save time and just trace AI images to make it (hey it's not like Hasbro cares).
>>
>>97987346
>Dan Frazier, artist known for his painting art, while being 81 years old he suddenly decided to open up photoshop, take existing art of the previous one ring, slap one of his backgrounds on the back and use the smudge tool to poorly remove the elvish engravings
I dunno, it sounds kinda bullshit. like they did not commission him at all and just used one of his backgrounds and decided to credit him for it.

>>97987435
Absolutely, the thing is absolutely bonkers. Best thing in the Tidus precon we also got Maester Seymour which is 1 less cost and only targets 1 creature, but any redundancy is good redundancy. This thing goes so incredibly crazy if it's unanswered for like 2 turns at most, sometimes only 1 if you do manage to move counters onto it. In my most recent playtest I got Tromell right before it so it came out with 1 counter already, then Tidus turn 5, then Rikku turn 6 and it was already too late
>>97987644
I believe that depends on the UB property specifically, but yeah I think LOTR is digital only

Either they fucked around some poor 81 year old so bad he had to cheat or they just paid him to put his name on some shit they threw together.

Also how hard would it be to draw a fucking golden ring? Did they have such retarded art directions that they basically just wanted the previous one ring with one of his backgrounds? It's just so fucking weird.

Dan is incredibly skilled, and even if he were experiencing Cognitive Decline, which could very well be a reality, don't you think his *agent* might just happen to mention that to them before they hire him?
It's a gold circle drawn by a man who draws mostly awesome jewelry. I also hate that this somehow means that the statement about

There's decline, which I believe in and do think is a reality given he's in his 80s but there's also just a super sudden jump from doing something like this (definitely not on par with his work from even a couple years ago, but still a far cry from the TOR debacle) to just copypasting someone elses art, inverting it, 2 seconds of magic wand, and hitting it with a blur brush once before trying to submit it to JotC. Wouldn't you think if he's as addled as people are suddenly trying to make him sound, he wouldn't be at MagicCon? Out in the open for everyone to watch him sundown and shit himself?
I also knew Mike Tyson couldn't fight anymore, but he didn't send another guy in in blackface to fight for him.

You would be surprised what corners artists you think are amazing will start cutting when they think they can. All I see is an old man who got busted trying to pass off exactly what you're describing because he's old and didn't realize how obvious it was.
>Wouldn't you think if he's as addled as people are suddenly trying to make him sound, he wouldn't be at MagicCon?

>>
>>97987872
Oh man as someone who used to be an avid One Piece fan who slowly started to only catch up once in a while, the art change as Oda has aged has been so pronounced. Genuinely hurts to look at Akainu like this.
I still don't see it for Dan the same way when we're much closer to the middle than the far right and suddenly he's even further past that for this one particular piece.
>>97987884
That's why I hate it. It could've been anything since he wasn't even apparently required to have the runes on it.
>>97987874
I genuinely think a tech illiterate boomer would have a harder time learning to copy/paste, crop, magic wand, filter the colors a little, transform, invert, and use the blur brush as opposed to just blocking out a child's drawing tier digital painting of a gold circle.
I don't doubt he'd be worse in digital, many artists are significantly stifled by changing mediums, it's why we didn't even see a chapter of Berserk and spent 7 years on the boat after Miura went digital, but like, this feels way too odd to me.
Don't expect me to go out protesting or suddenly decide that *now* is the time to finally hate WotC or whatever, but it smells of shit and not the warm doodoos of a hearty meal kind.

My thing is, it would have been easier for WOTC and Dan to say this is just a concept, and it is not the final production art. Instead they’ve both dug themselves into a deeper hole. Also, Donato Giancola has said in Facebook posts that Dan and WOTC had been going back and forth on concepts and couldn’t agree on a concept. Makes me wonder if Dan turned in that version of the The One Ring out of frustration to see if WOTC would catch it ( which they didn’t ).

I have heard that Eshki is deceptively hard to get going as commander. Double spelling during your main phase AND a type requirement is a little steep for a card and some counters. But if you build it well with low cmc stuff, good card flow and a good mix of types it should be fine.

Sorin is Extort on a 2 drop. That alone is pretty powerful and shitty players won't pay attention to him until you've gained 12+ life. Probably the stronger of the two.

Are you really so naive to think they print millions of cards to put into boosters, sealed into boxes, only a month or two before the sets come out?
Its a box topper only, so they could reprint the box topper boosters, but that would still require opening every single booster box they have, repacking and resealing it. That's probably 10s of if not hundreds of thousands of dollars of work on top of delaying their product.
Hasbro isn't going to do that,

goodwill pull, obviously didnt have the decks that came with the box.. but it has a random assortment of white border junk 7th ED and earlier, which is my preferred era in terms of border and art so i'll take the junk, and if nothing else the box itself is extremely awesome, came with the little black bag with the fishtank style pebble tokens, and the literature inside was all in tact and good shape (duelist + rulebook)

damn just went to one of the LGS in my town for the first time since moving here and fucking place was blasted out the door with people holy shit.

Magic is alive and well, at least in Florida. and it didnt stink like shit and only a few people were the size of the house. There were even a couple black and (real) female players. wild ish!!

bought some random boosters and got a Sacred Foundry and Niv Mizzet. then was stopping by target to get some stuff to make dinner and they took all the secrets of groom haven shit down from behind the service counter. I was going to ignore this obvious "Harry Potter lite" set except it occurred to me theres those archives cards some of which are definitely valuable for my main deck. also had recently went to wal-shart and they said they took their trading cards (of all kinds) down and when they put them back up they will only have pokemon. whats up with that?

to note the target still had a random end cap with TMNT boosters and some random box of Aetherdrift something, I dont know if it was a fat pack or what. behind the counter were groom haven decks too but yeah its mysteriously gone.

One of my oldest commander deck is a Jenara wall deck. Defend, put together a combo and back it up with a counterspell. Everyone just assumes you're going aggro/voltron with her, which you can, if needed, with extra mana end of turn, or if you get infinite mana.

She absolutely did not. Everything she did was in accordance with being a pro-free speech liberal. The thing that got her in the most trouble was posting picrel, a milquetoast centrist message, with the handshake being cropped out by redditors. Not at all "silly end of the right." Irritates me when people label her "right wing." She's a free thought lesbian hippie lady. She seems like a nice lady, and it's not cool that people still lie about her.
>>
>>97990174
>>97990204
My understanding is that she [also] donated artwork to a friend or fellow artist or something who then auctioned that piece off and donated to/associated with a radical-feminist movement that refused to acknowledge men who had chopped their cocks off as women. This is why Terese was labeled a TERF (trans-exclusionary-radical-feminist).
On the subject of political affiliations, it should be noted that everyone knows that the right wing is famous for its sensitivity toward women and support of feminist causes. It definitely wasn't two different camps of extreme leftism attacking each other.

It should also be noted that, from what I have heard, Terese herself never spoke of, donated to, or in any way advocated/supported the '''"'right wing"'''' hate group. Her artwork was given to a friend and it was that friend who was the only one with any connection to the group.

Terese is 100% innocent of any wrongdoing and I maintain that the reason she was let go by JotC was because she was one of the very few artists with enough of a fanbase and pull that she could ask to be compensated fairly and JotC would rather hire amateur digital plagiarists who they can pay peanuts for and totally control than work with real artists who know their own worth. They were looking for a way to get rid of her, probably for years, and this was just a convenient excuse.
>>
>>97990237
Yeah it's completely crazy that as an outspoken lesbian who has never made any sort of extreme political statement in her life the left dogpiled on her so quickly and with no reflection. Meanwhile James Gunn makes repeated 'jokes' about raping little boys and he is forgiven because Guardians of the Galaxy was such an epic wholesome 100 movie.
>>
>>97990252
The political left is a cult that bases its collective opinion off of a narrative spun by the higher-ups rather than individual thought.

I just unboxed the new Prismari commander deck, and I realized something that hit me harder than the price tag: the Collector Booster sample pack is officially gone. I knew this change was coming, but it hit me more than I thought it would. It was the one part of the box I had a reason to open immediate, that five-second "lottery ticket" moment to see if I was lucky. I know it was usually just bulk, but it was /something/, right? Last time I opened it I found a shiny nice 30 cents card :) it was cute.
For many of us, opening a new deck is a ritual. That little silver pack was like a gift to our inner child, providing a moment of excitement before diving into the list of 100 cards we already knew were in the box. I don't buy packs anymore; I just buy singles like everyone else I know, but here and there, a little bit of surprise is nice. It was psychological and, in some ways, even metaphysical - the idea of a deck with a surprise, maybe giving you simple bulk or maybe making it special by giving you a card you actually needed for that deck! During the Lord of the Rings set, my mate opened The One Ring and it was awesome
By removing it, the experience feels sterile. I know that they are moving towards a minimum viable product in order to milk us more, still it's weird. They’ve stripped the oversized cards, downgraded the life trackers, and now they’ve taken the one unknown variable out of the box, giving us the minimum. Will they get rid of the deck box too? I wonder.
>Am I the only one who feels this way?
>Am I over-romanticizing a game that has become a shell designed to milk us?
>>
>>97990271
This is copy pasted from reddit, isn't it
>>
>>97990283
Which was in turn copied from ChatGPT.
>>
>>97990283
Impossible, it has greentext. This is clearly how 4chan users type.
>>
>>97990271
You’re not over‑romanticizing it.
You’re describing something real that a lot of players feel but don’t always articulate: the ritual mattered.
That tiny silver pack wasn’t about EV or value. It was about texture — the emotional texture of opening a product that felt like it had a little mystery baked in. Even if the “mystery” was usually a foil uncommon and a bulk rare, it still created a moment. A pause. A breath. A spark of possibility. And that spark is disproportionately powerful compared to the actual cardboard inside.
>Why it hits harder than expected
You already knew the sample boosters were going away, but the moment you opened the Prismari deck and felt the absence, it became concrete. It’s like when a café quietly stops giving out the little chocolate square with your coffee — it’s not about the chocolate, it’s about the gesture. The sense that the product is trying to delight you, not just deliver the bare minimum.
Magic has always had this dual identity:
>A game, with rules and cards and formats
>A ritual, with opening, shuffling, discovering, sharing, hoping
You’re reacting to the ritual shrinking.
You’re also noticing a pattern
You listed it out yourself:
>Oversized cards gone
>Life trackers downgraded
>Sample boosters removed
>Deck boxes feeling cheaper
Each one individually is small.
Together, they create a sense of erosion — like the product is being optimized for cost rather than experience.
And when you’ve been around long enough to remember when Commander decks felt like little treasure chests, the contrast is sharp.
Are you being too sentimental?
Honestly?
>No. You’re being human.
Games aren’t just mechanics.
>They’re emotional ecosystems.
>They’re nostalgia engines.
>They’re social glue.
>They’re tiny rituals that give us joy in ways that don’t need to be rational.
You’re allowed to mourn the loss of a small joy.
Are you alone in feeling this?
Not remotely. Plenty of players have said the same thing in different words:
>>
>>97990319
You could say that the Gathering has lost its Magic.
>>
>>97990330
If you mean Magic: The Gathering specifically, the feeling that “the Gathering has lost its Magic” usually comes from one or more of these pressure points:
Power creep and constant set churn
>New mechanics and increasingly complex cards can make older strategies feel obsolete faster than they used to.
Product overload
>Secret Lairs, Universes Beyond, Commander decks, premium variants… it’s a lot. Some players feel like the game shifted from “collectible strategy game” to “relentless product pipeline.”
Universes Beyond fatigue
>Crossovers with Fallout, Lord of the Rings, Marvel, etc. excite some players but break immersion for others.
Rising cost to stay competitive
>Especially in formats like Standard or Modern, where key cards can spike hard.
Digital vs. paper tension
>Arena’s economy, rotation policies, and limited card pool create a different experience from tabletop.
But the interesting twist is that the game is also thriving: Commander is bigger than ever, competitive play is rebuilding, and Universes Beyond sets have brought in huge waves of new players.
So the “magic” hasn’t disappeared — it’s just changed, and not everyone likes the new flavor.

Thanks, I forgot about that one. I've considered the financial perspective before, but I think it's unlikely given they've kept other prominent artists around, even giving them secre lairs (Guay being biggest). I think it was just peak Floyd hysteria and wotc saw a lot of value in taking a high profile "nazi" scalp.
>>
You know the real reason they got rid of the sample pack? They didn't want to, it was a great way to tempt people into paypigging for $40 boosters, classic "first one's free" strategy. They had to get rid of them because of Final Fantasy. Scalpers bought up the decks, cracked the packs to sell the borderless cards at a profit, and then listed the decks on tcgplayer to squeeze more money out of it. They labelled them as unopened because the deck itself is still in the plastic wrap and that's what the listing is for, not the bonuses in the box. Anytime you bought supposedly new product online you were risking getting one of these, and WotC got flooded with complaints of missing sample boosters. All creating more work and expenses until it wasn't worth it anymore.
Thanks specbros.

It's probably much cheaper to commission 5 pieces of art every few years than to have an artist regularly paint a few pieces of art every set.
They've done the same to John Avon (I assume his forest in MH2 was leftover art that they didn't end up using) and sort of Raymond Swanland.

You can instantly mill out opponents with specific cards and opponents might focus you with that in mind.

Think mill is pretty boring though. Sometimes it lets the reanimator player really go off, but the play pattern is that your opponents have a game until they suddenly don't.

Bruvac is a very consistent and powerful and boring deck. There's tons of cards that make target player mill half their library now, and enough redundancy for self mill wins if someone has a titan and is recurring their graveyard.

I wouldn't bother with it if I were you. Mill causes salt above and beyond its power level and you will grow bored playing solitaire with yourself each game.

I think you are misunderstanding the timeline (likely because I explained it poorly)
Terese was removed from Magic BEFORE Secret Lairs and similar premium versions of cards were commonplace.
JotC had already gotten rid of artists like Guay and Avon in order to cut costs and have artists that weren't famous enough to make demands or oppose house style/hyper specific art direction.
JotC knew that Terese had a lot of fans and were unhappy keeping her on as an artist but didn't want to deal with the blowback of not hiring her anymore (maybe they thought it would correctly identify them as cheap?).
The 'drama' with Terese happens and JotC decides that this is a perfect pretext for getting rid of her.
Some time later, Secret Lairs and full art treatments and fancy alternate versions start becoming the standard in every set. At this time JotC decides that they can afford to rehire fan favorite artists for only a couple of commissions AND to sell these premium slop products to 'collectors'. They contact Avon and Guay and whoever else. They are unable to do this with Terese because they very obviously ousted her for 'ethical reasons' and thus can't justify bringing her back.

I'll repeat, this is just my theory about what happened but it is definitely true that around the time that Terese was let go, the artstyle of Magic was, by design, becoming more homogenized and a lot of legacy artists were no longer putting out pieces of art for new sets.

I have a very high winrate at my lgs. However, this is backfiring tremendously against me, because some people at my lgs do not want to play against me.

We all play at bracket 3 and all my decks adhere to bracket 3 rules, but my decks are very highly optimized with excellent manabases (and some infinite combos), whereas most of my opponents play slightly-upgraded precons or memeslop.
I play very respectfully and I don't have hygiene problems but the dudes at the game shop are simply tired of losing to me.

Do I kneecap my decks on purpose to not be such a menace at the tables or should I keep my decks as-is and look for players willing to tolerate my deck's power level?

Any reusable utility land (ex. Rogue's passage, War Room), or lands with a large sacrifice ability you use later in the game but can use it as a regular land before that (ex. The World Tree, Inventor's Fair). It's not a ton, but that's sort of what makes it not anti-fun, it just shuts down lands that are issues in themselves.
>>
>>97992127
The hard rules don't necessarly determine power level. All of my decks by hard rules are 1/2, but can easily take on 3s, and some 4s, so the decks are 3s. Your decks may be 3s by hard rules, but if they are very consistantly winning against other 3s, I'd say they are actually 4s, so I would say either play with 4s, or follow 2 or 1's hard rules instead, and end up with actual 3s.
>>
>>97992146
Any deck that relies on a very small group of cards, or very specific cards. Include removal and recurrsion, and the titors function as all 3. This could even be a secret commamder deck if you wish.
