rewatching star wars the original trilogy for the first time in maybe 20 years. Lot of complicated emotions. Pretty sure Episode 1 was the first movie I saw in theaters with my dad and each brother was just old enough to watch episode 2(W) and 3(J) and we watched all of it together in preparation for the new movie each time. What are you up to?
>>97997172S fun thing to do is watch rogue one then straight into episode 4
>>97997181100%Play Edge of the Empire and crib endlessly from WEG sourcebooks.
>>97997172Movies and television have their own board believe it or not.
>>97997172>20 years since you rewacthing a movie you likedDo you have a fantastic memory or something?
>>98000929You forgot your line, troll. It's >Traditional games?
>>98000940Just because you like something doesn't mean you should over consume. I probably ruined Episode VI for myself a bit by watching it too many times as a kid.
>>98000947Mong.
>>97997172May the Force be with you too, OP!>What are you up toI'm searching for the best science fiction fantasy mini/setting agnostic wargame to utilize for any miniature setting from 40k to post apocalypse to cyberpunk, to more and hopefully even Star Wars.>>98000961>I probably ruined Episode VI for myself a bit by watching it too many times as a kid. That hit me close to home.Concerning the Star Wars movies, what makes the prequel series better than the sequel trilogy? I've seen a lot of people say that is the case, but I'm not sure what most of the reasons are.
>>97997172not rewatching unless it's the restored fan cuts without any of the retarded changes
>>98001048>Concerning the Star Wars movies, what makes the prequel series better than the sequel trilogy? I've seen a lot of people say that is the case, but I'm not sure what most of the reasons are.The prequels have a lot of flaws but there's an interesting political thriller at the core alongside a story of a hero succumbing to his fear and ego. The prequels might have bad dialogue and a lot of stupid, cartoony bullshit in them, but it's clear that there was an artist at work with them and there are some moments inside of them that are truly inspired in concept even if their execution is pretty weak. The sequel trilogy is two-thirds corporate slop made exclusively for the sake of profit, and the other one third is The Last Jedi which is a film made by a pretentious, incompetent douchebag who openly despises everything about Star Wars. All three films are terribly written, none of them have any respect for worldbuilding or character development or even the vaguest concept of plot consistency, and the point of the exercise from the outset seems to have been to milk the maximum amount of money from the original trilogy while also degrading and humiliating every one of the original main characters from it. From top to bottom, the entire project was a soulless cash-grab that never involved a single creator even vaguely excited to work on it. The clearest delineation I can draw between the prequels and the sequels is the worldbuilding. The Clone Wars are effectively an entirely different setting with a completely different vibe than the Galactic Civil War of the OT; by comparison, the sequels effectively reheated the setting of the OT in the microwave and just changed a few things to make it less obvious they copied.
>>98001048Eh, dunno if it's better. Prequels at least have feeling it's a story someone wanted to tell, even if writing, directing and acting is garbage because it was made by inept hack who by that point was too rich for anyone to say no to.Sequels, tho? Kinda tainted by trashbrams, who is even worse writer than the above, even if he is better at actually making the movies and directing the actors. Visual side in episode 7 pretty much trashed the prequels, even though it was just lame copy of episode 4. Then we have 8, which had to spend half of the movie fixing mess ep 7 made, but it was made by probably BEST director to ever touch SW, best visual side, best writing, best special effects. Also, Ryan really cared and made it fully faithful to original trilogy where the force was mystical energy and Yoda was wise if trolling master before inepthack made him squirrel on speed. Luke dueling Kylo using 'a jedi uses the force for knowledge and defense never for attack' doctrine was the finest SW on screen and movie I was waiting for since 80s.But then sequels were trashed by disney listening to bunch of screeching morons and bringing trashbrams back who proceed to RUIN everything ep 8 set up by wasting 3/4 of the movie retconning it only to delieve pile of trash with garbage writing, garbage acting, with more plot holes than plot, and terrible visuals, crashing the franchise because his ego couldn't stand the thought of being one upped by someone competent in previous installment. If disney gave the movie to literally ANYONE else and did the plot they initially planned, 9 would be fine, if unspectacular movie, like 6. Instead, it was franchise killer...
>>98001242>incompetent douchebag who openly despises everything about Star WarsUtterly retarded take. Ryan SHOW he cared for and loved the setting by reading bunch of background and RPG books, and based the story on SW like it was intended to be, mystical and fantastical, before lucas ruined it with midishit and squrrel on crack Yoda showing zero wisdom. I still remember the Interview where he was reading bunch of drooling moron comments like you screeching about aspects of the force in his movie, then was opening book X or supplement Y to show the force technique or quote in question was fully canon, though a lot of time too obscure for the shallow clowns in question. He outgeeked them and for that he has my respect.>none of them have any respect for worldbuilding or character developmentWot? Another utterly retarded take, whole plot of Finn in ep 8 was developed from what trashbrams saddled him with, cowardly deserter who wants to run before developing into convinced rebel. Poe develops from stupid fighter jockey only seeing his own nose who might be skilled but utterly unsuited to lead (see losing whole bomber squadron on pointless battle that didn't need to happen but he wanted glory and repeatedly ignored orders) into true leader who has wisdom to call off the attack that will maybe result in Pyrrhic victory but will not advance the rebel cause, just kill more pilots. Rey goes from jedi fangirl into actual jedi, that was frakking MORE character development than any other SW movie besides maybe ep 5. Too bad trashbrams thrown it out in next movie.
>>98001242Consistency? Ryan frakking wasted half of his movie to be consistent with trash that was 7! And worldbuilding? Fucking half of the ep 8 is spent in civilian setting, showing some uncomfortable truths to the characters thinking they can solve all the problems with blasters (the 1% getting rich from both sides of war while everyone else slaves for them). They meet other rebels who unlike Han Solo won't turn into rebellion fanatics in seconds but are really in it for money and are willing to betray the 'good' side instantly when the problems begin. The other SW movies feel like railroaded RPG adventure. This one like actual, realistic story. If you don't notice the massive difference in worldbuilding quality, do buy glasses or something.I really liked the Luke plot, too, he ended up like Obi Wan in the original trilogy, eaten by guilt from losing his sister's son, but unlike Obi Wan, he actually got to fix his own mess. His interactions with Yoda and final duel with Kylo were the best SW writing since episode 5. Ditto with death of Snoke, arrogant Sith wannabe who was really strong but too arrogant to recognize his visions of the future were made of pieces put together NOT quite the way he imagined was brilliant writing. That's the way you write prophecies, vague and leading to tragedy if you try to interpret them literally instead of allowing for multiple possibilities. Snoke just let his arrogance cloud his judgement thinking Kylo is too afraid of him when he just made Kylo hate him and finally snap seeing the chance to backstab while Snoke attention was away. Too bad you're too stupid to see this.>Clone Wars are effectively an entirely different settingWhich is really trash writing as it took big steaming dump on the whole EU and on everything the original trilogy said about the Clone Wars. Starting with the fact clones were the BAD dudes! And the clone masters (multiple) the villains! And you whine about consistency? What?
>>98002231You are wrong. The bombers were so slow that if they would have turned around they never would have caught back up with their carrier. It was a suicide run from the start whether the movie wants to admit it or not. It was better to blow up the dreadnought than to turn around and have the bombers picked off by tie fighters. Power was right and admiral gender studies needed to be nailed to a cross.
>>98002312Based.
>>98001048As you can see, it's complicated.Personally I put most of the blame on Abrams' "MYSTERY BOX!!!" writing; The prequels for all their flaws had a throughput: Anikin's fall to the Darkside.Sure, that's because it is a prequel, but there was a consistent drive to that conclusion.Abrams using the Mystery Box does create a fertile opening point for a new story, but with no clear end point that allow Ryan plenty of room to work his good takes (Luke's story, Kylo and Rey story) and his bad (What ever the fuck was going on with Finn and Rose, "HA HA, Holdo was actually LE GOOD, chuds!").
>>97997172The first movie I saw in theaters was the original Dawn of the Dead because my father was big fan of zombies.
>>98002473>HA HA, Holdo was actually LE GOOD, chudsReally?Holdo is terribly written.Like if Ryan came out and said that Holdo was meant to be an 'anti-girlboss' character in showing what not to do as a leader who happens to be female I wouldn't be surprised.
>>98000947Obsessed lol.
>>98002509>Really?>Holdo is terribly written.Good lord your reading comprehension is terrible.
Traditional gamesraditionalgames?
>>97997172Beware the Revenge of the Sixth, lol. But seriously, what world-building tips would you take from Star Wars, and what mistakes does it make?
>>98004810Personally, the thing that bugs me the most about Star Wars as a setting is just how lacking in nuance it is. I don't mean the black-and-white, good vs. evil morality; I love black-and-white morality and I think you'd be dismantling Star Wars as a whole if you removed that. What I mean is that I hate the binary factionalism of Star Wars; the Empire and the Rebellion, the Jedi and the Sith, etc. Why aren't there more factions? Jedi who have become radical "peacekeepers" and become a group of stoic religious crusaders; Sith who feel that passion and hatred do not have to go hand-in-hand, and that the dark side might be just another path to mastering the force which one must use sparingly to avoid succumbing to evil; children born after the Galactic Civil War who grow up watching the Republic fail to control a galaxy dominated by criminal corruption, who feel that the Empire made their lives safer and easier, and that the "freedom" the Republic supplies really doesn't apply to the average person....There's so much more you can do with the concepts at play in Star Wars, but limiting things to "red team vs. blue team" is gonna kneecap the kinds of stories you can tell significantly.
>>98007112>Jedi who have become radical "peacekeepers" and become a group of stoic religious crusaders;Amusignly enough this kinda happened in the prequels. Or at least Yoda feared it with the clones.Went nowhere, but.
>>98002231Rj aka Darth Ruin was the final nail in the coffin for the sequels, his movie was so dogshit it defies explanation.TFA was not good, but what do you expect from JJ?If you compare TFA to some bland fast food, soggy fries, dry beed, stale bun. . .then TLJ was was literally dung smeared onto mouldy potatoes. Both movies ignored worldbuilding, shat on all pre-existing concepts and were little more than bad copies of the OT movies. The big, important difference will forever be that after TFA they could have made a better movie and a good trilogy. The pieces and threads were there. After TLJ, they should have simply stopped. All heroes were subverted, all story threads wasted.
>>98007112The old EU explored some of that, but Disney threw all of that into the trash.
>>98004810Not enough perspective on civilian life. The constant upheavals are weightless without seeing how it affects citizenry on any given planet. It's also not clear what the average person not going on adventures does all day since there is no galactic wide web or other conveniences that should exist with their technology level. Feels more like a set piece than a setting at times.
>>98007571That's why Star Wars Holiday Special is a Keystone feature
>>98003940Traditional Games!raditionalgames!
>>98007571Andor shows some of that. It really does a lot to show what the Empire meant.
>>98004810Make it dusty. People, items, vehicles, even a lot of shiny new stuff feels like it's been used.
>>98007366Even the movies got into it. You had bounty hunters and crime lords. Jabba has no ties to the empire or sith and certainly not the jedi. You had the cloud city which was taken over by the empire but they took over everything. Most of the movies take place in space stations and bases and battlefields. getting some civilian perspective would be nice but it's also just not really gonna come up beyond some motivational dead parental figures.
