>>98000197The problem is that the World of Darkness isn't nearly dark enough. The real world has none of the restrictions that fiction does. The average third world country is as terrifying as the World of Darkness.
>>98000225Then just incorporate the darkness of the real world into your World of Darkness. What's stopping you from doing that?
Welcome to the Fan Reboot of Darkness, a project wherein we reclaim our beloved game from the taint of Paradox. Thus far, we have paved the road to Hell with good intentions by making demons our foundation, followed closely by ghosts. We have moved the focus away vampires, werewolves, and magi in order to let the other monsters shine in this World of Darkness. There has been some discussion on consolidating Deviant: the Renegades and Promethean: the Created under a general "mad science" umbrella. To give our reboot some more personality, we have decided to include in-character descriptions of their powers. >>97995660 Let the brainstorming commence.

>>98000389Thanks for the tip, chief. I'll look into it.
>>98000315>Let the brainstorming commence.Well, what is our opinion on the existence of changelings, mummies, and sin-eaters? How many lines do we need? What makes this different from Curseborne?
I think it's a shame neither version of Changeling uses the original folklore concept. I can understand why they changed werewolves from the classic concept, because there's only so much you can do with the idea of turning into a big wolf once a month. But the idea of being a fey swapped with a human child at birth, growing up in a human family and then realizing your true heritage seems like a perfectly good basis for an RPG. The default plot hooks would be about getting entangled in the obligations and feuds of your family 'back home'. Like a 7-Eleven cashier discovering they are the heir to a fairy kingdom and also their uncle (a troll) wants them dead. I know that sounds like the premise of a faggy YA novel but we are talking about changeling here.
>>98000604To be fair, Lost uses some of the original folklore concept... but doesn't call them Changelings, presumably because nWoD wanted to keep a sense of continuity by re-using the names of game lines. It is a bit irksome though. Fetches are the fake person that's swapped with the real person they kidnap, though it's not limited to actual babies. It's not quite the same as what you're talking about, though to be fair I've seen other bits of folklore that don't treat it as an out and out babyswap between humans and fae, but more like a freaky doppelganger kid. >I know that sounds like the premise of a faggy YA novel but we are talking about changeling here.I agree it's a good idea for a story/RPG, but I'm not sure if it'd be a good fit for WoD and either WoD's player base.
>>98000604>the idea of being a fey swapped with a human child at birth, growing up in a human family and then realizing your true heritage
>>98000604>>98000643It does sound like a faggy YA novel but those do sell pretty well. I'm also fairly certain that (at least with the original WoD run) they didn't want to copy folklore too blatantly. Even in Vampire they didn't really do it. We should blame Anne Rice for only getting horny for Vampires and very occasionally a werewolf or something

>>98000315With the new focus on demons and ghosts, I think an idea I had for an alternative Mage game would fit in nicely>Mage: The Pact>Mages are humans who have gained power by making a deal with a supernatural entity>sort of a sidekick splat who gets their powers from one of the main monsters of the other gamelines, in addition to the traditional deals with demons, you could form compacts with the fae, chiminage with werewolf ancestor spirits, etc.>of course you don't get these powers for free, your patron expects something in return and if they don't get it they're going to send their minions after you to make sure they do>but that doesn't mean you have to stay a slave forever, as a Mage you'll use your wits and sorcery to amass knowledge and power until you can turn the tables on your former masters
>>98000020>Whats the furthest you were willing to go in order to obtain information from someone or vice versa?I played a Ventrue who, while not being particularly monstrous, had no real issue with torture provided the person being tortured was an enemy. However, being a Ventrue, the clan with access to two disciplines that can make people tell you their deepest darkest secrets with alarming ease, she rarely needed to use it. The one time she had to actually employ torture was against a Trujah (long story). It was effective, most torturers go overboard with it. You need to break down their confidence, then offer them a carrot before they get fatalistic. The pain's just a tool to get you there. As for vice versa, it was a VtM game, there was a long list of antagonists who would do unspeakable things to her and the rest of the coterie if they could, but fortunately never did. Much more recently, I've been playing an Ogre (CtL) crimefighter who ain't above a bit of torture, though he prefers the threat of torture to actually following through, he'll do it. His darkest moment was making a privateer ugly cry by explaining in exact detail how he was gonna kill her husband, then following through and making her look at his mangled corpse. In his defense, the husband was also involved in hunting people for sport, selling people into fairy slaves for profit, recreational torture, among other things.
>>980006650Supremely based and Genshinpilled.
>>98000315I made a joke post on this premise a while back. Everything is demons:>vampires are corpses possessed by demons>woofs are animals possessed by demons>mages are humans who bind and/or make contracts with demons>changelings are demon sleeper agents>hunters are humans>demons are demons
>>98000678 >>98000315>https://britishmythology.substack.com/p/changeling-hell-the-fairy-map-thatHow will we determine the population distribution of the various monsters? None of the previous editions have satisfied players. Either the numbers are too low which limits the sorts of interactions that can happen or the numbers are too high which strains credibility. And what about beings like Kuei-Jin, yōkai, and "culturally-specific" monsters?
>>98000724The thing is that you can make it work it just takes a lot of effort to make it feel less generic or you end up with Darksiders.
>>98000680This is kind of cool but it's a bit disconnected from the same fantasy Mage has in both WoD and CofD
>>98000724Why not just go ALL in on Demons instead?>Hunters are humans manipulated by demons (to take out rivals)>>98000768Technically, the horsemen aren't demons (they're Lilith's weird autistic kids), the angels aren't demons, there's a lot of weird races that aren't demons, and there's near-human races that aren't demons either (like the crowfather). Not like Darksiders lore will ever be finished since the game and the comics got mostly discontinues
Why the fuck are you guys reinventing Monte Cook's World of Darkness?
>>98000724Sounds a bit like Buffy, minus the mages. But Slayers also get their power from a demon.
>>98000774That's intentional, I feel like Ascension got it perfect right out the gate and any attempt to mimic it would just come off as second rate, so I went for a different direction entirely
>>98000803Ita funny how that does mirror a game mage killed.
>>98000787Because they're dumn-dumbs, clucking nonstop aboud demons this and demons that even though I'm willing to bet none of them even know what the word even means.
>>98000815First I've heard, care to elaborate?
>>98000821The game was called Sorcerer, by Ron Edwards. It was basically an underdeveloped version of mage where you got your powers from a supernatural patron of some kind. I honestly don't remember much about it.
>>98000744Don't give hard numbers, there'll always be a sperg that takes issue with whatever figure you give. Besides, it's not like anyone's running a supernatural census. >And what about beings like Kuei-Jin, yōkai, and "culturally-specific" monsters?I prefer the approach of having your primary universal monsters, and folklore being local interpretations and region-specific of said phenomenon. After all any setting with a Masquerade is predicated on the populace not having very good intel on the paranormal. Also, just from my personal reading, there's enough throughlines for certain types of monsters to make unified international templates out of them. They might be called different things, but most cultures have a hungry undead (vampire), or a type of being that comes in the night and harasses, rapes, or even kills a helpless victim. Animists tend to be on similar speeds when it comes to "taking on" the aspect of an animal, and that's actually different from the "mildly supernatural wild men" that exist in pretty much every culture. Also, in order to do the alternative justice, you'd need to do everyone's "culturally specific" monsters, and then we'd have like 200 different templates at absolute bare minimum.
>>98000604In the Ancient Magus Bride there's a Changeling who grew up with humans and became a doctor. Eventually they met the human that they replaced and married them. The human has become tainted with the fae energy and turned into some kind of elven dog centaur.
>>98000315>>98000680You know with the big focus on Demons and Ghosts, what if:>Demons feast on belief/suffering of humanity to get powerful>Demons can only feed on human souls>The afterlife used to be a hunting ground for demons until ghost civilisations formed in the underworld>Demons now have no choice but to form pacts with humans to recruit more soldiers. People willing to feed the innocents to the demons to save themselves>Since civilisations are reflective of the state of the living world, demons also wage a war on the skinland to cause as much dissaray as possible to send the ghost cities into chaos
>>98000061lol
>>98000931Shit, that's a pretty cool idea, actually. Though I think we'd need to flesh out demons some more to figure out how they can still be good enough guys to headline their own game while eating peoples souls personally I like the Devilman approach
>>98000966well my idea is rough, but if we keep the original pitch then it can go two ways if demons want to be heroes instead:1) Play a low power demon. The stronger you are, the more you need to feed. Like the equivalent of human in peak body shape.2) Feast occasionally and sparingly... or then again, you could target the humans who made infernal pacts. To keep going with >>98000931What if vampires were humans who made pacts so they could stay "alive"? Since the afterlife is the scariest end for any living being, many would do anything to not end up there. Their role used to be lording over human settlements and rot it from the inside.Feras on the other hand were the soldiers made to conquer settlements in the past and disrupt convoys and communications.
>>98000931>>98001014What would be the role of necromancers in this setting? Evil enslavers in the service of demons, or allies of the ghosts who support them in return for service in the living world?
>>98001014If we're going demon-centric I'd rather go even harder on the Thiess of Kaltenbrunn inspiration and have it that werewolves were made by "gaia" to hunt and kill demons with the twist being that "gaia" is actually an ancient and very powerful demon who was only interested in getting rid of the competition, but has been dead, or on the verge of death, so long that the werewolves have forgotten and glorified their origins>>98001067I don't see why both couldn't be a thing, necromancers would be Mages who've made pacts with either demons or ghosts
>>98000020>Whats the furthest you were willing to go in order to obtain information from someone or vice versa?Depends on who the person is. If it's just some person, I wouldn't push too hard even if it was critical information. I'd torture a vampire just to find out what time it was (well, at least in the chronical I'm playing in right now).
>>98001067Could be both honestlyThough on the evil side, imagine that you have a ghost regiment who marchin to get in position to defend against a wave of demonic creatures about to attack an undefended town that has just being ravaged in the real world. The psychi feedback could have it collapse between the very next minutes to in a couple of days, weeks, months or even years if you're extremely lucky. Then suddenly you cannot find your officer. Where has he gone in this crucial moment? There's an awkward silence before you hear the officer barking orders at you and your comrades. He is back. You are just a simple soldier, so you don't question his orders, but you can't help but wonder why he would demand you fortify points that hold less strategic value. You have no time to question. The demonic horde is coming.Minutes later, you are your men are defeated. Your incorporeal bodies torned apart by monsters, or dragged in chains to the infernal realms. Some of your battle brothers plead to be spared. Begging to join the demons. Before being dragged into a machine that will rip your soul to shred in excruiating agony, you see your officier standing alone. Untouched. Tears of impotent rage flowing down their cheeks. Then you finally percieved the almost invisible chains that binds him. A necromancer in the skinlands must have found his remains or one of his fetters. He forced your officier to betray you. Between animalistic fear and misplace rage towards your officer, you also have a tinge of pity right before the soul grinding machine's teeth sinks on you.Right now I'm in a WW1-WW2 mood after watching a Foxhole video. Necromancy is a fabulous tool for espionage and sabotage.>>98001085that works too

>>98000575On that note, how many divisions of each do we need? I enjoyed the modularity of the Chronicles of Darkness, most having a 5 x 5 system. Also, I was impressed by the tier-system from Hunter: the Vigil. If possible, I'd like to keep this consistent across all the lines.

Going back to Ancient Magus Bride, what’s interesting is that you have two kinds of magic users. Sorcerers, who pretty much follow the same path as WoD sorcerers and Fate Stay Night’s magi with their magecraft. And you have Mages who make pacts with the Fae. By doing so they have near unlimited resources and can live for centuries. Here’s two videos. One showing Titania (and Fae in general) having a resentment towards Christianity. The second is why you should never anger them.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Xp5pn1qZvcI&pp=ygUZYW5jaWVudCBtYWd1cyBicmlkZSBmYWlyeQ%3D%3D&ra=mhttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PjqOJs985UU&ra=m

How much do we want to deviate from previous iterations of the World of Darkness?I dunno desu. At this point I feel like what I put out is flat out reinventing the World of Darkness. I just took the idea of switching the main splats and recreating the series around them. For religions… what if some of the gods are demons? Like the original concept of earthbounds? The ghost governments working with them would consider feeding the gods to be a minor sacrifice while facing hordes of demons that wants nothing more than to torture you for eternity, or destroy your soul in a horrible manner to feed their own appetite.

I don't personally think it should be easy if it can be or necessarily doable, otherwise every kindred capable of protean into a dog might be capable of it. Certainly interesting, you can imagine every wolf that hears it is like an amplifier or you can imagine it's like a code they pass on (like a language then). >>98000315https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demon#Kabbalah>In Kabbalah, demons are regarded as a necessary part of the divine emanation in the material world and a byproduct of human sin (Qlippoth).[100] After they are created, they assume an existence on their own. Demons would attach themselves to the sinner and start to multiply as an act of self-preservation.[101] Medieval Kabbalists characterize such demons as punishing angels of destruction. They are subject to the divine will, and do not act independently.[102]>Other demonic entities, such as the shedim, might be considered benevolent. The Zohar classifies them as those who are like humans and submit to the Torah, and those who have no fear of God and are like animals.[103]From what I can gather from Wikipedia, ablutions (including baptisms) seem to be a nigh-universal practice. It keeps one both physically and spiritually clean, preventing the defilement of holy spaces and purifying oneself of the taint of evil. Running water, especially from a natural source like a river or waterfall, seems to work best. I'll be sure to add this to our list on how to deal with demonic influences.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ritual_purificationhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harae

>>98000315>Thus far, we have paved the road to Hell with good intentions by making demons our foundation, followed closely by ghosts.Would it be accurate to say that the setting can be summed up as "As below, so above"?
>>98000315>Thus far, we have paved the road to Hell with good intentions by making demons our foundation, followed closely by ghosts. With those two as the focus, I think there is potential in exploring an Hades/Tartarus duality: the Underworld as a place of rest for the souls of the dead and the Underworld as a place of confinement for horrors of ages past.It could even be a reason for conflict between splats: demons come in conflict with the living due to requiring taboo/evil/the rejection of maat/civilization/the natural order, but they also come in conflict with the dead because their civilizations confine fellow demons (thus they undermine factions in exchange for favors with the demons they are helping free, or aid a faction whose existence is hindering a potential rival)I feel like there is potential inspiration in the myths regarding Nyx and her children, Izanami and Apophis.
>>98000315I'm a bit iffy on the idea mentioned of making Risen part of the core wraith experience. You are a ghost, not a zombie, if you want to interact with the skinlands you'd could get inspiration from poltergeists, possession of people animal or objects, illusions...That doesn't mean that zombie stuff can't be part of the splat, but it's different enough that I don't know how to feel about making it part of the "default" so to speak.

>>98003206>Hades/Tartarus duality>come in conflict with the dead because their civilizations confine fellow demonsI like to think of the Underworld as a deep cave: dark, gloomy, quiet, perhaps even "liminal". Hell, on the other hand, is like the Earth's core: hot, miserable, bearing all the weight of the world, and at the center of it all. Ironically, despite being both the metaphysical/ontological foundation and nucleus of the World of Darkness, it is hollow. There is no "rock bottom" to evil; there is no dependability to chaos. One can always descend further into the bottomless abyss. Both are connected by the throughline of subterranean rivers of ancient myth, e.g., Styx, Lethe, and perhaps the Nile. I assume that both realms exist on a continuum with some areas being less permeable due to different spiritual qualities, barriers, and guardians. Obviously, both ghosts and demons are spiritual beings, intangible and invisible under normal circumstances. That being the case, they crave the material world. They long to experience the pleasures of the flesh. They yearn to have a tangible, discernible effect on events. When they are unable to manifest, they have to act indirectly through proxies... or directly through bodily possession.>I feel like there is potential inspiration in the myths regarding Nyx and her children, Izanami and Apophis.I agree. Feel free to elaborate on this point.

>>98003418>CofD made their origin be an explicitly not-Egypt apocryphal pre-history nation in the region specifically to avoid that. But it didn't work because it was very clearly an Egyptian pastiche/stand-in.
>>98000315Ghost and demons are good for a basis. Most monsters are either dead people or a race of "others" like the fae, djinn, youkai and etc. The lore behind vampires and mummies could tie to why they didn't become ghosts while the "others" are of the same species as demons but due to being neutral they are neither angels nor demons. If the flagships of oWoD were Vampire, Mage and Werewolf I propose the reboot's third focus to be Mortals. When a supernatural being is neither undead nor a "other" they're usually a human that was cursed or gained powers. We could lump hunters(both powered and not), mediums/psychics, mages and even werewolves(or any other kind of werebeast) here.Maybe the overarching crossover plot, that you can just ignore if you want, is this threeway war between the Mortals, Immortals(demons and fae) and the Dead. Some general brainstorming ideas:>Werebeasts protect Gaia because it's the mortal world, they are biased towards the wild side of things and don't care too much about civilization>Zombie splat with mummies as the aristocratic "clan". They're agents of the Deathlords of WtO on the mortal world>Vampires are corrupted undead and make up the Hungry Dead splat, most feast on blood while others consume flesh or life force>Immortals include Angels, Demons and Fae but they're not on the same "side". They're powered by human emotion that functions like CtD's glamour. What sets demons apart is that it's generally related to sinfulness>Humans are mostly the poor fucks caught in the crossfire of Immortals and the Dead but the Angels decided to give them a fighting chance by imbuing(wink wink) some with powers>There could be a whole splat of "tainted" humans including kinain(and CtL changelings), kinfolk, dhampyrs, ghouls and HtV's Lucifuge>Immortals can make pacts with humans which in turn is a mage splat
>>98003034> do mummies count as too culturally-specific Or are they too thematically narrow to sustain an entire game?yes to both, but i am not sure the second really is that much of a problem for players given that they tried to fix that and nobody not even the 4 mummy fans care about the non egyptian mummiescofd mummy kinda fixes the first with a spooky patron who gives you quests and a focus and both cults and people stealing your shit so there would be a game there even if you cut out the pseudo proto egyptian stuff, but they knowlingly and on purpose made the game too high concept with the whole non linear time and memory issues for it to be a mainstay
>>98003648Nothing should stop you from playing any of the splats blissfully unaware of this hyperwar tho. Dying or whatever shouldn't make you an immediate conscript. This could be exploited by either side I wager, I can see demons turning werebeasts into pawns to their "cause suffering ??? profit" scheme and crap.
>>98003648>>Immortals can make pacts with humans which in turn is a mage splatI made the initial pitch for mages and I'd like them to be able to make pacts with any splat, not just the obvious ones, to become a "lite" version of them. So you could have a mortal blood mage whose pact is a sort of ghouling arrangement, for instance.

Maybe in like 2009-2010 I used to frequent an old forum on yuku where some Finnish guy was a hardcore shill for Promethean: The Created, kept saying it was the second coming of Plansecape Torment, a real high quality product, with lots of philosophizing, metaphysical musings and contemplations on the nature of a man. Always made me curious but life got in the way and I never checked it out. Looking it up now, it seems to be a pretty niche game nowadays, anyone here ever play it? What was it like? What state is it in nowadays? It's a lot to ask, to be spoonfed like this, I realize, but I'd like to know if he was really on to something back then, for sentimentality's sake. He seemed like a fun dude, as far as Finns go.

It's a pretty good game with very nice flavor, but it's got a particular brand of storytelling you're stuck to that isn't going to appeal to all the players and is a bit restrictive on character building compared to other games giving you a billion options. Honestly good luck to anyone able to run it, I imagine ST'ing for it is a pain since the Promethean mechanics encourage you to migrate whenever the current story arc finishes, or maybe even before.

>>98005811>I got the impression nobody actually includes signature characters in their game, and to me it would feel weird if one appeared in my game.Personally, and I'm mostly speaking about VtM here since I don't really play the other oWoD games, but my problem isn't just with signature characters, it's how a lot of canon VtM characters are written. It's a real common thing you'll see where there's some canon character, almost always an elder or methuselah, who is written as if their shit don't stink. Their flaws, if any, don't come up terribly often, and they're talked up as some sort of genius manipulator, but you read about their schemes and they're awful ideas, the kind of stuff that would blow up in their face, but survives through the will of the writer alone. Those ones are annoying and tend to get more press than the more interesting, nuanced ones, because they were some writer's pet. But not every canon NPC is like that, even some signatures are fine. Like Beckett, Beckett's fine because he's got some serious Ls on his record. Not even the Caine skepticism really, the dude hate-embraced a nazi Hunter like that was a good idea and was taken in by Freud's nonsense. He's not a complete joke, but he's more believable. Heck, some of the other signature characters can be interesting if you were to play them more honestly. I wouldn't mind having Lucita de Aragon show up if she was depicted as what she is, a daddy issues slut who has been coasting on powerful blood and who her sire is from night one. Another example, Theo Bell was pretty interesting until they rewrote him into a straight up Gary Stu.

>>98006479These are mostly my complaints as well. When I read about most signature characters I don't feel like I'm reading about an actual person within the World, I feel like I'm reading about someone's OC they forced into the setting.

>>98003648>I propose the reboot's third focus to be MortalsDidn't the Chronicles of Darkness attempt that? While I agree that it could be done better, I'm not sure how well it would catch on. Hunter: the Vigil works because it gives the action-hero fantasy that lots of people want from a tabletop game. But even it allows for a supernatural spectrum from demon-blooded characters (Lucifuge) to empowered serial killers (Slashers).
>>98007140>Hunter: the Vigil works because it gives the action-hero fantasy that lots of people want from a tabletop game.Big misconception there. That's one of Vigil's potential modes of play, but not the standard one.
>>98003650I would much rather BE a mummy than play one. In both versions, they have it pretty good.
>>98007162Resurrection maybe. Curse? Haha no. You're the ultimate wagie working for the ultimate asshole managers, and there's no option for retirement, nor the consolation of the sweet relief of death. Don't Forget, You Are Here Forever. Also you have chronic brain damage and you feel like the pickled corpse you are.
>>98003656>Dying or whatever shouldn't make you an immediate conscript. Many people think that zombie horror is about being eaten by the ravenous dead. But the real horror is that you become so enslaved that you must toil even after death. As the slave-master, the bokor is the true monster.
>>98007140Vigil's strength is versatility. It's not just for action adventure. You can play a game with relatively little combat, more of a mystery/thriller where the PCs are just trying to get to the bottom of a paranormal mystery. Or occult researchers, for that matter. You can be scrappy underdogs, or load up on exp and be the anti-monster death squad. It's a game defined by customizability and being versatile, which makes it stand out in a series that's known for more focused and narrow in scope games. It's sort of an anti-WoD game, and I love it for that. I'd also argue that starting with mortals as a base template isn't a flaw, and the whole "nWoD/CofD is a failure" line of reasoning is questionable, since it was ended by executive decree, same as oWoD. The whole edition war stuff needs to stop, it's silly in the age of WoD5. But back to the point, basing things around normal mortals is good for consistency's sake, if there's any issue with the base mortal template it's that Hunter makes it redundant for specifically PCs. It still works for NPCs just fine.
>>98007162cofd mummies actually have it kinda shit between their memory problems, their warlock patrons and the fact that there are no loop holes in their contractsthere are immortals who come close to wod mummies in cofd but never as great a deal they either need to keep a item or guard a place and they aren't really as fleshed out as a full splat so have fewer powers
>>98007158>>98007194I think a better way to put it is that Vigil has the appeal of playing a good guy who fights monsters, which is still an oversimplification, but gives it a broader appeal sense almost every rpg is about that and it's what rpg players expect
>>98003795Aren't these the divisions used in Curseborne?

desu for the rp thread I don’t think it would work or be interesting if it’s not a common splat that you could do easy research to start rping. I know that I wouldn’t join one on mummy. Maaaaaaybe one on wraiths, but it’ll probably be just the “I’m a fledgling new to this, what do?0
>>98007226Every WoD splat (yes, even Werewolf and Vampire) allows you to be a good guy fighting against bad guys I'm pretty sure. Unlike Mummy (Resurrection), Vigil doesn't really enforce you being a bad guy except for the whole not being a serial killer and slasher part.
>>98007290I feel like Mummy, having only 4 books, would be pretty easy to get into but I understand this pov yeah. I didn't necessarily want to do Wraith because the Shadow part might be hard to incorporate and Wraith is a big read. I do get that Mummy is kind of niche, and I guess we already had niche already with HtV.Ultimately, I don't think a single rp thread will ever appeal to every anon posting here and it's pointless to try but I still appreciate an opinion about it. I'm not necessarily a die-hard Mummy fan but I figured the other options are too recent and Changeling would be kind of difficult. I don't think Mage is a good idea either unless we want an actual weeks-long debate war over traditions-fagging and technocracy-fagging. Tough situation
>>98007226>Vigil has the appeal of playing a good guy who fights monstersOooh ho ho ho ho...~

Wouldn't a WoD game of mortals just be a bunch of mortals that interact with the gamelines, like hedge mages, consorts, wannabe hunters and detectives, blood dolls, medium, kinfolk, dreamers, cultists, slasher groupies or whatever? I don't just mean the RP thread, I mean a tabletop one too.

>>98008052This can be done pretty easily in Vigil or HH, even a slightly modified H5. It's an interesting idea for a game but at least in WoD mortals are pretty weak comparatively
>>98007938>I don't think it needed fixing though, unreliable narrator is an interesting perspective for a trrpg and WoD's often personalized text pairs well with itYeah, sure, but at the same time after all of the Revised books and apocalypse scenarios were published, WoD was complete. >>98007719I was just trying to do a dark story about some nomad sabbat who got possessed by a blood bane and was slowly turning into a bloodworm. I didn't like how painfully thick the other poster's plot armor was, so I wanted to do one without. His whole pack was slowly dwindling because he wouldn't stop doubling down. Would've been fine with some interactivity but didn't get much in the way of replies for most of it, so it wound up being fairly linear. Then right when he was locked in a box being starved as he began the transformation, some wizard was trying to offer a get out of jail free card, and that left a bad taste in my mouth so I just stopped posting soon after. Then like a few nights ago I checked in, made a few posts, not with any story in mind just playing the field and honestly I bounced off it because it seemed like it was not really any different from the end of /schreck/ 2.0. As I said, just didn't vibe with it.
>>98000315>>98000966>while eating peoples soulsHow about instead of eating souls strictly required, it's a temptation like VtM diablerie? You are a creature of darkness, a shadow casting itself into the light of civilization. And to *withstand* that light you need more darkness, either by bringing it with you somehow, harvesting it, darkening the world around you to relieve some of the pressure, some combination...This is where both corrupting mortals and making them suffer comes from. You need less power to resist banishment the more of a hive of scum and villainy your home is. You get power from making people worse versions of themselves. You get power from making them suffer. So then the dilemmas come from deciding what to do when making the world worse is good for you. Do you act like the Furies of Ancient Greece, inflicting inhumane torments on those who you can tell yourself "deserve it"?Do you focus on making people break taboos without worrying about the consequences of making that one dude cheat on his wife and that other one become an alcoholic?Do you drive mortals to worship you, to taint themselves with your essence so that they can nourish you, despite that being bad for their soul and sanity and the origin of plenty of "crazed cultist" stereotypes?Do you flock to cities with larger congregations of your kind, so that their presence alleviates some of the pressure at the cost of having to deal with worse politics? What do you do when a group of good people begins to make an effort to improve the lives of the people around you, knowing that its success will weaken you during a time when you really need all the power you can get?The problem with all that relying on mortals is that mortals aren't exactly reliable are they? They can move. They can change. They can die. They don't come with you. So getting souls as items instead of people tempts you, despite knowing how horrific it is to steal people's souls.
>>98009343I like everything except for the part about temptation. I don't think that a demon would have many - or any - compunctions about enthralling, devouring, or tormenting a soul. Rather, I would say that, for whatever reason, it is DIFFICULT to obtain souls. Perhaps, souls must be given willingly with no coercion and with fully-informed consent. And if we want to harvest souls on "Hell mode" (heh), maybe they must come from someone with completely unhindered agency. That is to say that a demon can not accept a soul from someone whose consent has been engineered, even indirectly.
>>98000315Do we want to keep something similar to the Wheel of Ages from Kindred of the East?Something about the combination of demon and ghost reminded me of the Greek Ages of men, and how they fates of those men in the underworld varied.>But after the earth had covered this generation — they are called pure spirits dwelling on the earth, and are kindly, delivering from harm, and guardians of mortal men; for they roam everywhere over the earth, clothed in mist and keep watch on judgements and cruel deeds, givers of wealth; for this royal right also they received>But when earth had covered this generation also — they are called blessed spirits of the underworld by men, and, though they are of second order, yet honour attends them also>These were destroyed by their own hands and passed to the dank house of chill Hades, and left no name: terrible though they were, black Death seized them, and they left the bright light of the sun.>But to the others father Zeus the son of Cronos gave a living and an abode apart from men, and made them dwell at the ends of earth. And they live untouched by sorrow in the islands of the blessed along the shore of deep swirling Ocean, happy heroes for whom the grain-giving earth bears honey-sweet fruit flourishing thrice a year, far from the deathless gods, and Cronos rules over them; for the father of men and gods released him from his bonds. And these last equally have honour and glory.>Envy, foul-mouthed, delighting in evil, with scowling face, will go along with wretched men one and all. And then Aidôs and Nemesis, with their sweet forms wrapped in white robes, will go from the wide-pathed earth and forsake mankind to join the company of the deathless gods; and bitter sorrows will be left for mortal men, and there will be no help against evil.Maybe it was a thought about one of the local potential doomsdays being that if the world becomes irredeemably corrupt humanity is wiped out and reset to forcefully banish everyone

>>98009533>Do we want to keep something similar to the Wheel of Ages from Kindred of the East?Personally, I don't. Though, I can easily imagine that is how some factions believe the world works and some may even strive to make it that way.

>>98000315For ghosts, how about making having a body a physical body an important privilege that most aren't allowed, as a way to tie Wraiths and Mummies and Risen together? If you are a mummy on an important mission, or an einherjar recruited to fight enemies of the valkyries, or some other Big Deal, you can be taught to how to possess a corpse. You might even have one already arranged for your mission. But if you are not? You don't know how, learning is illegal in most jurisdictions, you'll have to make do with whatever corpse you manage to get your hands on (and maybe get unwillingly involved in their baggage, if recognizes them), and you have ghosts and maybe even some of those authorized Risen hunting you down to preserve the Veil/Maat/law and order/whatever.But you might still consider it worth it, ghosts often have unfinished business after all.If you play Mummy you might be a special forces agent sent back to the Skinlands again and again for difficult missions. If you play Wraith you don't have those privileges but neither do you have that level of scrutiny: are you going to try to earn those rights, feel that you don't need them, or feel that you don't need to get them legally?
◄ Ephesians 6:12 ►https://biblehub.com/ephesians/6-12.htm>For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. This verse can also be a rallying call against governments, corporations, and hegemony, all of which demons may be behind.
>>98009821>For ghosts, how about making having a body a physical body an important privilege that most aren't allowed, as a way to tie Wraiths and Mummies and Risen together?Perhaps the ancient Egyptians and the early Christians were right. Maybe a preserved body is required for proper resurrection. This was probably discovered when spontaneous mummies (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mummy#Types) were able to rise.>If you play Wraith you don't have those privileges but neither do you have that level of scrutiny: are you going to try to earn those rights, feel that you don't need them, or feel that you don't need to get them legally?Perhaps, a new body can be grown...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJArzkCbCkA

>>98003648>>Immortals include Angels, Demons and Fae but they're not on the same "side". They're powered by human emotion that functions like CtD's glamour. What sets demons apart is that it's generally related to sinfulnessShould we include "Beasts" and "Shades"? The latter probably wouldn't mesh well, since we already have ghosts. On the subject of ghosts, I like the idea that, like mortals, ghosts can also become "inhuman" (specters, geists, and other "depersonalized" intangible beings).
>>98009514Souls being hard to get would also help establish the potential conflict between ghosts and demons, since ghosts are bodyless souls
Now that we are hitting the bump limit, I'll try to summarize what we have.Firstly, in the place of vampires, werewolves, and magi, we shall prioritize demons, ghosts, and mortals instead.Secondly, while this fan-made World of Darkness has a spiritual core, it is ironically "insubstantial"; demons and ghosts need mortals and the material universe to give themselves meaning.Thirdly, mortals can acquire supernatural power(s) through pacts and/or being part of a lineage.Fourthly, a lot of you have shit taste in music.

“What, if some day or night a demon were to steal after you into your loneliest loneliness and say to you: 'This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more' ... Would you not throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who spoke thus? Or have you once experienced a tremendous moment when you would have answered him: 'You are a god and never have I heard anything more divine.”― Friedrich Nietzsche, The Gay Science
