Laios in Dungeon Meshi wears full plate with extra neck protection, but keeps his head bear in case a slime sneaks up on him from above. In a greathelm the slime would just choke him without him even knowing it. That's also why soldiers in Vietnam would often wear hats rather than heavier helmets.
I've had several characters wear the Morion because I think it looks cool.Also because they were based on Swiss/Germanic mercenaries who also wore it but.

All living things have Mana, and while certainly for martial characters their natural defenses are more potent, all living things that learn to harness that mana - be it to empower the self with martial Enhancement Arts or to affect the world without with Arcane Arts through spellcasting - have some layer of enhanced defense that prevents what you're winging about. Because it's fantasy. And fantasy doesn't need to be realistic.

I always want my character to wear a helmet. Wizard, druid, rogue, whatever. He can wear cloth or leather anywhere, but that head needs a sick-ass helmet.
