What RPG system would you use to run a game inspired by death game media? That is, the PCs all accepted a chance to get filthy rich by participating in a game where they might die to traps, failing challenges, other players betraying them or simply fights to the death, all the while some rich assholes watch and make bets. The characters usually don't know what awaits them until the game starts, it might be themed in various ways, and while there's no way to prove anything to the authorities of the outside world, the organizers always pay and never force you to play again – but the offer often comes.

Sounds like a board game.

It'd be a oneshot or very finite campaign divided into fairly distinct challenges. These would either need completely different systems, or more likely a set of modifiers that makes each one play out differently. Each subsection would presumably need to be very meaningful, affecting resources significantly or even eliminating a player entirely (who then needs to have fun watching the rest scramble for the finish line). Then the winner gets to flex and you move on to something else.

Nothing comes to mind as especially well suited for that, but I'd be looking at Talisman or Elder Sign before D&D or Dark Heresy.

Deathmatch Island.
Yes, really. Someone beat you to this.

I agree with >>98003619, this is more competitive boardgame or one shot material, I can't see how a group of players could stay together in such a scenario, unless you go out of your way to make it a team deathmatch with little to no internal struggle. The high stakes can make everything go south really fast, and you want a high lethality system where players are squishy, something like CP2020 maybe (and the setting is great for such a thing). Even if you wanted to keep it as everyone for himself, someone died and they made a new character, it would still be hard not to have metagaming factors muddle the waters because of grudges and things the previous character discovered.

should have specified, I was definitely thinking one-shot, the inspiration mainly came after reading Shinobigami from that jap games thread
thanks for the replies, will check the games you mentioned

If you're using PbP or like text-based, this can easily be run freeform. Just make a sheet that has like name, age, and then a list of strengths and a list of weaknesses and go from there. Done it several times on forums successfully.

Similarly FATE could probably work with that idea due to its freeformness, honestly.

You can do whatever you want in it.

Want to play a bird-person? Done. Want to carry a sci-fi laser rifle? Done. Want to play a shapeshifting wizard? Done. A whole campaign where you stop adventuring and open a cute little coffee shop? Done and done. Star Wars? You got it. Want to play out the midst of the American civil war in the 1800s? You can do that too.
Remember, this is THE world's greatest roleplaying game and you can do whatever you want with it, it's not JUST for heroic fantasy!*

*Some homebrew required. The incomplete rules of 5e make it hard to run anything, including 5e. Make sure you spend as much time as possible coming up with new systems and rules to modify the game to the style you want. It's definitely easier than just learning a new system.

my favorite way of playing 5e is getting a group together, finding a comfy spot in a good café/tea house, prepping somewhat in advance, burning the book in a ritualistic sacrifice, pulling out whatever autistic hyperfixation of an RPG system I'm currently reading and playing that instead
my long term goals include getting some kooky enough weeb friends to run MAID and convincing someone we're totally gonna have a good time with Wraith the Oblivion
