This is a pretty interesting little wargame. For some reason, I expected it to be more DnD-like but it's a fairly simple, but poorly formatted wargame. There's a free reformatting/organization version online I used and I've run a few games. First game I just straight up did the Battle of Balin's Tomb in Helms deep and it worked very well, however the troll managed to kill frodo and legolas. second match we did a bandit camp raid, and I find the whole "hero" and "super-hero" thingOtherwise it's a fine game.
>>98006634I've been running it with od&d and holy shit it really does make that d&d playable. Being ablt to transition smoothly from dungeon crawling to overworld battles is great. On top of that the weapon class system finally makes the weapons make sense in d&d. Great rules.
How do you use fantasy monsters with the mass combat rules? Not fantasy monsters with man to man.
The Old Lords of Wonder and Ruin is a good rewrite which is free on drivethruRPG. I've never actually played this, but reading through it looks like a decent system. I don't know why it gets so little love.
>>98011305>rewriteWhat got changed?
>>98011401I tried to change very little. It was about making it easier to read, like a more modern rules set.
Why has Chainmail gained such a following today, considering that back in the 70s almost nobody actually used it to play D&D? Is it a matter of pseudo-purism, or do people really like this suboptimal system full of gaps? Unless I'm dealing with a pitched battle between armies in my campaign, it would never even cross my mind to use it...
>>98011744>I tried to change very little*It tried to change very little
>>98011744>easier to readWhat, were the fonts bad, or was the text too small? Was it not written in English?
>>98011965not him and haven't read it, but have read the early shit that came after itit's all in the editing I bet, cause that shit is usually mouth-to-page unsorted and unclear, and is not organized well in the slightest
>>98006634Battle of Balin's Tomb happens in Moria, not Helm's Deep.
>>98006634>I find the whole "hero" and "super-hero" thingYou find it what?>>98006683Yep, this is the shit. Came here to post this really, fpbp.
>>98008187The fantasy monsters have listed mass combat troops that they fight as, e.g. a troll fights as eight Heavy Foot or whatever. So you roll for the troll as if you were rolling for the attack of eight Heavy Foot infantry figures. It's pretty straightforward.Man-to-Man on the other hand has no support for monsters at all.
>>98011781>Why has Chainmail gained such a following today, considering that back in the 70s almost nobody actually used it to play D&D?It's because even though it was little-used at the time, Chainmail is actually pretty thoughtfully integrated into OD&D and improves several aspects of the game, which makes it more fun to play. Fairly straightforward really.
>>98016220You have to use the Fantasy Combat Table for Man to Man.
>>98018395The FCT has no entry for normal men. That only works for hero-types, and with them mass combat never applied vs. monsters in the first place.
