How do you feel about Jagens/Crutch characters in /tg/? How would you play one?
>>
I prefer Oifeys.

Jagens may encourage players to not rely on them by their age hinting at a low growth rate that will make them weaker than other units in the long term, but players should already be able to recognize that spreading XP around is inherently beneficial and that relying too much just on stronger early units will hurt them in the long run.

Oifeys, like best character Titania, can be relied on in the early game as well as the late game, so they don't end up being a burden just to teach players a lesson fairly late in the game that they can't do anything about. Lessons that only matter for repeated playthroughs are the kind of lessons that I'm not particularly fond of, because I'm always looking for lessons that matter for TTRPGS, and you only get to play through those once.

As for how to play a Jagen, ask your DM to let you start out two levels higher than the rest of the party but only get half the XP. You'll be great at first, and you might even be able to carry the party at times while acting as a mentor, but eventually you'll be trailing the party, looking back at the glory days, and wishing you had asked to play an Oifey instead.

Good at rounding posses, otherwise can take or leave them

I made a Jagen character once. Human fighter focusing on battlemaster with great weapon fighting.

Essentially played him as a completely dead inside man who was a really good beat stick but basically unable to bounce off in role-play so newbies could learn and enjoy the game creating their own little adventures.

I was still the same level as the party but the DM would mostly target me more often seeing as I could take a beating thanks to good saving throws, decent AC with chainmail and a good amount of health bulk. Shame the campaign died off due to low attendance both on the newbies and my end seeing as we are in completely different time zones and I'd usually crash because it'd be midnight

Seems like an allied NPC, more than a PC. I probably would never play one as a PC, unless I was conspiring with the GM to get him Obi-Wan'd; replacing him with a character I actually want to play long-term.

I'd probably never let a player play that sort of character in a campaign though; either things would be slow enough that this guy would just lord over the party the entire playthrough, or he would get intentionally or unintentionally retired/'retired' to let the player play something else. At which point, I'd rather the player just make the character he wants to play from the outset.

I guess if worse comes to worse, you could use them as an item jockey. Or cook up their horse for good eatin's.

When introducing Pathfinder 1e to beginners, I sometimes make a Jagen NPC who's just a warrior 4 on a horse. His numbers are big enough to babysit PCs in combat until they have a few levels under their belt, but the total lack of class features makes it clear that he's not "the star", even if he's capable of dominating combat for now. He tends to retire naturally around when the players hit level 3. I think they're a useful tool to smooth over the volatility at low levels some systems have.
