Rate my draft format?
>Problem: In booster draft, each drafter picks cards one by one. The drafter must guess at whether he eventually will be able to put together a synergistic deck from the individual cards that he has drafted. This creates inefficiencies—e. g., flip-flopping between different plans in an attempt to conform to “signals” that have been sent by other drafters, and instantly throwing cards into the sideboard because nothing in the current pack conforms to the drafter's current plan.
>Solution: The simultaneous multiple-round auction (SMRA; also known as simultaneous ascending auction) was developed by economists for the application of selling off synergistic bands of radio spectrum in an efficient manner, and has been adopted by several governments for that application. The parallel to Magic: The Gathering drafting is obvious.

No, don't think that's what he meant. Black people don't give a fuck. This is only done for the certain subset of white people. And there's a lot of them. And they play Commander.
>>
>>98012439
WotC/Hasbro don't give a fuck if it's resellers buying packs or black people buying packs or chuds buying packs. That's my point. If the game is on a decline and they're faking numbers to prop it up, they would be literally crucified. Look at any rich person in prison, the only reason they're there is because they started fucking with other rich people.

>>98012460
Again, it doesn't matter to the suits who buys packs, as long as they're buying packs. But logically they're not going to take a loss just to play politics. They sent pinkertons to get some cards back. They butchered the competitive scene because it wasn't directly turning a profit. They're literally trying to bust a union right now. They only care about making money, anything that doesn't will get dropped. The fact that they've stuck with it for this long indicates it's making money.

It isn't that complicated. Simplified version:
>Each player gets 960 poker chips
>The auctioneer opens eight boosters
>Each player uses his chips to bid on exactly 1/8 of the cards (just delete the secrecy of bids if it's too complicated to implement)
>Bidding continues until every card has a winning bidder

>>98011015
The point of cube is that it can be anything you want; you can have as much or as little nuMagic design in there as you want. If you take a look at Cubecobra you can see many examples; the MTGO Vintage Cube and LSV's Cube are often cited as good (starting points) if you don't know what else, but if you're new they may not be the best. The downside to cube is that you do need to coordinate with other people rather than showing up at your LGS at 6pm on a Friday and playing with whoever's there for <format>

Again, you're safe with pretty much any closed format provided you can find people to play with. Worst case you can play on MTGO or in webcam leagues.

What was the main issue with Chupacabra compared to regular removal/counters? Is it because it's always a guaranteed 2-for-1 which makes it an auto-include (which in turn kills Standard enjoyment because it removes replayability and all that)?

>>98013941
Even if we include Jumpstart and add all of the Commander decks, 726 is still very high. For comparison, Final Fantasy commander reached 483. So if we assume Marvel commander decks have a similar number of cards, that means Jumpstart has over 200 new cards/reprints not in the main set. That is a LOT.

Deadpool, Spider-man
>>
>>98014038
I did, it's simply that the dog is a guaranteed high-value 2-for-1 creature that at most can fluke... and just be a plain creature. It has no variance with its value and is always the correct play, and it strongly disincentivizes any kind of investment or long-term planning because you'd rather play "ETB make a 1/1 token" than "big fucking dino that needs to attack once before it accomplishes anything"

>>
>>98011000
2/10
It's shit for a whole host of reasons.
The one that stands out to me the most is the idea that you will be able to make good decks with 26 non-basic cards in your pool (15 cards - 1 basic land and 1 token/ad card = 13 playable cards per pack). Given that an average limited deck has 23 spells that means there are only 3 cards in your pool that will not be used in your maindeck, fewer if you are drafting lands for mana fixing or utility.
It doesn't matter how 'efficient' your draft format is (it also isn't efficient by any sense of the word I am familiar with and I would love for you to go into detail what the word 'efficient' means to you), it is extraordinarily unlikely that you will be able to open a pool of 208 cards and have less than 25 of them be useless in all formats (eg., Hedron Alignment or Biovisionary are not going to be played in draft).

You being ignorant enough to not realize that two packs absolutely will not create a wide enough pool for viable limited decks shows me that you understand fuck all about limited. The rest of your format introduces the need for a 9th player who doesn't actually play the game and makes the draft process take forever.

There already exists the rotisserie draft format which solves the same 'problem' (which is an intended feature of draft fwiw) you have outlined without wasting everyone's time. I've only done roto drafts with cubes but we just open one round's worth of packs and then burn the last X number of picks (usually 2-5 depending on number of players) to ensure the best 30 or so playables are picked from a standard sized pool. I suspect this would work well in booster draft as well.

Yea, you got it. The comparison he draws to Baneslayer is really solid because Baneslayer is a powerhouse that can provide massive swing if it gets to attack even once, but it has to attack before it provides any benefit. Bowmaster is another example like Chupacabra where it's even better; it ALWAYS gets value even if it doesn't kill something and is even safer because it has flash, you can just cast it on your opponent's end step rather than having to commit to the board on your own turn.

They give examples of Nekrataal and Doom Blade + Divination. Nekrataal kills stuff, but with limitations. Like Fear, it gives a particular colour a contextual advantage over the others. It sticks around but only has 1 toughness, so a 1/3 can block it even though it has first strike. Double spelling Doom Blade + Divination requires the player to cast 2 spells and have both of them resolve, and even does not leave a body in play. Chupacabra is Murder on a 2/2 that will stick around and continue to attack and block until it's removed.

You can draw comparisons to this on other games, too. Hearthstone had this card, but it was only available for the Hunter class; strong, but tolerable because you can only play it in Hunter and it's something that this class exclusively does. Then they introduced the 'rush' mechanic, which was like haste but limited to attacking other creatures - which is a base mechanic of the game - resulting in a similar effect to Chupacabra. Furthermore, many rush creatures had on attack triggers or high toughness values, meaning they could stick around for more than just the turn they're cast.

Speaking of power creep, I will forever maintain the position that the one simple fix that would bring balance back to the game would be the return of upkeep costs.
>>
>>98016773
I think one thing it has going for it is that the artists were seemingly encouraged to depict the motifs in a stylized or abstract manner. Most basic card art is more literal, functionally photographic in representing the idea of the card. That can be fine in its own way, but it's not necessarily the most visually interesting way to represent a concept.

I've been suffering through Gay School: Secrets of Homos as best I can, but all I've gotten were Vision cards (if your favorite character was/is Vision you're a loser among losers) and a fucking Pizza dog (to remind me I will never escape Pizza in mtg).

I dunno how people play a lot of the newer cards without losing their fucking mind, and this is without mentioning when there's 4 people playing overcomplicated shit
I ain't touching lil bro outside of Arena

Speaking of coplicated shit, I was watching the strixhaven pro tour finals, and despite presumably these two guys being among some of the very best magic players in the world, even they were losing track of shit because there was so much going on. The judge stepped in and asked them to play slower so stuff wouldn't get missed. This seems insane to me, why does the boardstate get so fucking complicated? There's a bajillion triggers, multipliers and assfuck math to keep track of, it feels like. And these guys were playing the SAME deck, so it could get twice as bad if there's two different decks doing this shit.

I used to like TCC in the early days but I got tired of him when he rolled out the UB apologetics (probably because he liked Dr Who so it was fine when it was stuff he liked) and now he's bitching about a problem he helped perpetuate

if only richard garfield knew what pandora's box was being opened by split cards. every day Hasbro pries open holy creation tearing apart the space on cards to try and fit more text on them.

Okay listen me out:
Double faced cards that are also flip cards (from og kamigawa) and each one of those flip cards is a split card.
That's 16 cards per card!
