For no reason at all I recently remembered Man O' War and its expansion Plague Fleet (and Sea of Blood)

Is it any good? Some people say it's one of GW's best efforts and really simple and fun, never mind a fleet would likely be really easy to paint.

I have some of the old plastic ships from the intro box, but I'm sure 3D printed options are easy to find.
>>
no one knows. In particular because I was shitting myself in diapers mommy milky when MOW was in vogue.
>>
I had fun with it back in ye daye, but you will need a second table for all the cards and counters, although if you were savvy enough I'd imagine something computerised could be done for a laptop or tablet or the like. Be prepared for lots of arguments over wind direction.

You can easily diy a fleet, I made one from cardboard a few decades ago.
And yea, its is easy and fun, also you don't need lots of minis or elaborate terrain to make a table look good.
>>

From the thumbnail I thought that was an angry Spongebob on the left.

So nothing has changed since then anon?

>Some people say it's one of GW's best efforts
Nostalgic grogs say that about literally every oldhammer release. Mano war, Mighty Empires, Mordheim, Warhammer Quest, Warmaster, Battlefleet Gothic, etc. all of them are supposedly GWs long lost masterpiece. One thing is for certain though, they are all better than modern GW games
>>
Closest thing I played was Dreadfleet with a friend that had it, quite fun for a few times but I don't know if it has enough replay value in the long run. There may be rules for new ships around I suppose.
>>98010897
>you will need a second table for all the cards and counters
Is the situation that bad? Well at least you can just print out everything and play with whatever shit you can make out of bits I suppose, how big are the ships supposed to be? Cavalry base size?
>>98011352
I am partial to BFG, Warmaster and Mordheim expecially.

>you will need a second table for all the cards and counters
Just get the smaller fanmade cards you can laminate/sleeve(?) and dot damage with dry-erase marker. No need to every use the huge original ones.

There's an element of exaggeration to "second table"; it depends on your play area and the size of engagement, but consider that each ship has its own record card and even for the basic galley it's... about 3"×3", or thereabouts? And they come in squadrons of 3. The big 'men o war' have yet bigger cards, though exact size varies (the 'tall ships' like the Empire Galleon or the entire Bretonnian navy have, well, tall cards, while a Dwarf ironclad's is shorter, despite them both being two levels tall). Thats easily bypassed by making/printing your own at a reduced size, but there is inherently a degree of paperwork and status tracking involved.
Model size is variable, but I'd say the large centrepieces were somewhere near cavalry base size, yeah. Some a little longer (the Khorne skullship as I recall), some shorter, though not drastically so. That's from memory though. I think your basic Imperial galley was about 1.5, 2 inches or so, so if you find old art and photos you can make a decent guesstimate from there.

I try to be wary of nostalgia of those long-gone golden teenage years, and I don't know if I'd say 'best rulez evar!!1!" (they had their "huh" moments, which ones dont?) but the games from that era feel like the concepts and rationales owe more to older wargaming philosophies than /v-esque tropes and conventions.

It's neat, being a Nigel Stillman design from the tail end of the Brian Ansell era. So the end of the golden years where the design studio was trying out lots of concepts without corporate overseers.
A bit of a token and card overload game for certain.
Here's everything I have collected on the subject, mix of official and fan stuff:

Mordheims one of those games where I’m not sure people actually play and they still make it their identity. One of those, they like the idea but will never actually play it.
I would love to play warmaster though, 10mm wargames seems more appropriate than 28mm-32mm.
>>
>>98012164
thank you kindly
>>
>>98010759
I've never played it, being much too young, but I read through the rulebook a few times over the years and honestly I think MoW games should be pretty kino. The rules actually attempt to simulate naval combat and the whole wind system makes the game very different from the main GW games.
>>
>>98012166
The active Mordheim community is absolutely huge and there are more players currently than their was back in the day when it released.
>>
>>98011352
Quest was a good game with an incredible box; the amount of card and plastic in there was impressive at the time, and astounding compared to modern offerings.
>>
A grass mat, some green trees, a walled farmstead, a small water feature with bridge - what more does a wargamer need in life?
>>

>posts ancient picture instead of their own table
fake grog
>>
>>98012166
Yeah 10mm seems way better for 40k, 32mm should be for squad sized kill team type stuff
>>
>>98010759
it's pretty easy to find 3d printed minis for it these days. Getting all the tokens and cards and ship displays and so on is a bigger issue. At its core it's a OK pretty fast naval wargame. Very playable and fun if you have any interest in old quirky rules. Probably still the best one with magic and fantasy races, because there have been like three of those game made.
Insanely unbalanced however, fleets range from disgustingly OP to unplayable. Don't start off with chaos, norse, orc, skaven or dark elf fleets.

Was Man O' War supposed to be the Battlefleet Gothic but for WFB?
I think Mantic tried to "reboot" Man O' War but it didn't do well so it is probably being converted into STLs to be sent out to die at this point.
>>
>>98019731
no, the sculpts for Man O' War were new, BFG was a reused of Space Fleet assets that were a reuse of someone else's shit from the mid 80s that GW used to sell (the other guy went out of business)
>>
>>98012166
>Mordheims one of those games where I’m not sure people actually play
Why exactly? It's a GW game, it's relatively easy to find appropriate models for, the terrain is easy to make. People love the campaign skirmish games despite their flaws, every GW playing club I've been part of organised a campaign at least every few years, often annually.
>>
>>98019731
It was a time where GW were largely doing "I've got a cool idea, shall we do it?". It's a self confidence they seem to lack nowadays.
On a wider point, naval and aerospace always seem very niche. X Wing was the closest we've had to a "must have" in either and (as fun as it was - at first) was hard carried by the Star Wars logo.
>>
>>98016851
I always found it sad that the game didn't last long enough to really fill out the minor fleets. Skaven, for instance, seem to have a fleet entirely made up of specialist vessels, whilst Dark Elves really lacked choice (though arguably not as badly as Dark Eldar in BFG).
>>
>>98022074
>It's a self confidence they seem to lack nowadays
I don't know they did put out the titan and areonautica games, resurrected blood bowl and a bunch of other stuff. It anything they're experimenting more now than in previous decades, where the most they did was put out a new box for space hulk and dreadfleet.
>>
>>98022100
Ah yes, I looked into BFG fleets and dark eldar had like...two vessels? Escort and cruiser, right?
>>
>>98019731
>Was Man O' War supposed to be the Battlefleet Gothic but for WFB?
No, Battlefleet Gothic was supposed to be MoW but for 40k.
