It was really the CYOA at the time. In hindsight review, Stardust is like a good 7 out of 10, but in its day you could hardly find a CYOA equal to it for awhile.After Stardust kicked things into overdrive, the way CYOAs were presented and changed over the years. A lot of people forget for example that companions used to be extremely cut and dry, most being 3-4 sentences at best. Pokemon Personified released by Italics showed that people care about companions (and that lore can override gameplay mechanics of CYOAs and how they interact with the world and players. This is how we ended up with the old waifu debate of "Pasille did nothing wrong". Another notable mention is the use of JRPG Traitor which tied the narrative into the choices, connecting companions to the world and events, and had a non-linear format. We also had break out of more detailed waifu CYOAs with Hell Roommate by SDA which spawned its own formatted series. Etc.
