>DMing a game
>Have to think of a character arc for a player with a human fighter
>Too boring to write for, just make up random bar fights for him to get into
How do you deal with boring unimaginative players?
>>
>>98037052
Just play OSR instead.
>Game is actually a game and not just some storyfag, theater kid bullshit
>Their arc is about how they went down in the dungeon, got treasure, killed dire-goblins or whatever, and became rich and powerful. Rinse and repeat.
>>

If the thread you're sliding isn't a puckee thread, I will confiscate your penis.

>Have to think of a character arc for a player with a human fighter
Bullshit, that's his job. And if he just wants to be the team's stoic anchor, that's fine too.
>>
Why is the DM thinking of character arcs? Shouldn't that be the player's responsibility? Also not having a character arc can itself be a character arc. Imagine a person who goes through a great trial or adventure and finishes exactly as they started, like Jonah in the Bible.
>>
>>98037052
Nigga, I know you got butthurt because somebody made fun of your sparkledog, but tell me one plot you can do with a bisexual tiefling in a wheelchair that you can't do with a straight white male human fighter.

>>Have to think of a character arc for a player with a human fighter
No you don't. Just have interesting things happen, see how players react to them and then roll with those reactions. I'm all for GM throwing in plot hooks relevant for a specific character, but thinking in terms of story arcs rather than plot hooks is folly.
>>
>>98037065
Jokes on you, he already had that removed.
>>
>>98037052
As a boring, unimaginative player myself, don't. Just leave them to enjoy the party's adventure as it is. Not everyone likes being the center of attention.
>>
>>98037052
Try playing video games. ttrpgs are not good at conventional story telling.

Lead a pride parade?

>>98037052
Maybe he had no background of note and the adventuring to come will form the exciting background he craves?
>>
>>98037052
Talk with the player.
Does he even want a story arc? Is he fine with just playing the character he made and just fighting external forces?
>>
>>98037052
As long as each session, every one of your players has their moment to shine, they'll walk away happy and wanting to play again.
>>

>Every character should have le epic story arc plot with character development and remorse at the end and some other shit
Even among the greatest figures, there are people who act simply for the sake of money and fame.
>>
>>98037052
You shouldn't plan an arc prior to the game because that'll be affected by the player's actions.
However, when you received the player's backstory and saw no hooks, you should have made suggestions for things that could have been cool.

>identify thing that character wants
>give it to him, but with complications
>rinse and repeat
You're overthinking this.

Have you perhaps seen an English-language movie or film that was made between 1908 and 2019? Might be one or two sources of inspiration there.

Only in 21st century western countries.

Same difference.
Both are funded by the same people.

I know this is bait but

>playing a game
>DM can't think of a character arc for my human fighter character despite having clear motivations, goals, and backstory
>too retarded to write a simple story, just keeps putting me in random bar fights
How do you deal with boring unimaginative DMs?
>>
>>98037052
If bro's gonna make an NPC, treat him like an NPC.

Don't let the GM.
>>
>>98037052
>Have to think of a character arc for a player
gaaaaayyyyyyy
>>
>>98037052
You think of arcs for the party, not individual characters. Players are responsible for their characters, not you.
>>

> ... to write for
Wat.

Either way, I have the opposite problem. I got no issue with human fighters. You've got rivals, challenges (like duels), beast-rearing, competitions, mentors with new techniques, legendary magical gear...

Depends on the fighter, really. A two-handed brute, a rapier-wielding charismatic CAD, even in AD&D you could go the bounty-hunting feel of net and trident. Not the same type of character, not the same type of incentives, of challenges. Sword and board defender, weapon specialist (kensai), spear cavalry, a stand-in-the back archer or flanking crossbowman.

Playing your half-fey kitsune or troll-blooded lizardfolk (or even, back in the day, your elven gish) is overcompensation for a lack of creativity, the zoomer's Harley Davidson Rebel (tm) identity.

When my group first started playing 4e I decided it would be interesting if the Warlord player what a thane with a fief. This led to several interesting opportunities for roleplaying and base building. From then on until we stopped playing D&D for the FFG rpgs my players always started the game with a quest to clear out a dungeon to turn into their base or something similar.

Rip off a soap opera. Evil twins, unfair marriages, cuckholding.

>Too boring to write for, just make up random bar fights for him to get into
Write increasingly outrageous bar encounters ending with him getting something cool or a map for a temple that has something cool
>>

>Have to think of a character arc for a player with a human fighter
Military veteran or Guildsman? Rich boy that was instructed in warfare by a Master-At-Arms? You could go in a lot of directions with it. I feel like maybe you just arbitrarily decided he must be boring first and cockblocked yourself out of your own creativity.

Yeah but it's a boring game.
